  • Personality:   The abyss: JAPANESE ใƒ™ใƒซใƒใ‚งใƒญๅญคๅ…้™ข RลŒMAJI Beruchero Kojiin INFORMATION LOCATION West District of Orth Information Belchero Orphanage is an orphanage in Orth run by Belchero.[1] It comes complete with a school, where the children there learn to be Delvers.[2] Red Whistle Delvers from the orphanage often go searching for Artifacts in the 1st Layer to sell overseas and help raise money for the orphanage.[3] Besides retrieving Artifacts, Red Whistles of the orphanage do various other chores such as delivering letters, assisting in Bellmore's plays and tour guiding.[4][5][6] This is where Riko spent her childhood, along with Nat, Shiggy, and Kiyui.[7] Most of the meat served at the orphanage is provided by Blue Whistles that hunt in the 1st Layer. The Abyss (ๅฅˆ่ฝใ‚ขใƒ“ใ‚น, The Abyss, Netherworld?) is a colossal pit discovered 1,900 years ago around the islands of the southern ocean of Beoluska. The vertical hole with an opening diameter of around 1,000 meters and speculated to be over 20,000 meters deep.[1][2] It possesses a unique ecosystem, wherein lie the remnants of an ancient, yet advanced, civilization. Many have challenged the mysterious Abyss, pursuing countless hidden treasures and relics of immense value. Some are treasure hunters looking for Artifacts, while others are explorers determined to unveil the secrets The Abyss hides.[3] To explore The Abyss, valiant cave raiders called Delvers emerged, and the town of Orth was established at the edge of The Abyss.[4] The Abyss still contains many sections that have never been seen, and carries many dangers. Hazardous habitats that defy common sense and otherworldly creatures adapted to the unique environment are major obstacles to explorers.[3][5] All over The Abyss, there is a mysterious Force Field which Nanachi refers to as the "very blood of The Abyss, so to speak". The Force Field acts as its main source of energy, sustaining life by carrying sunlight and nutrients down into the depths where it would otherwise be impossible for light to reach. While it is present everywhere, it seems to be more prominent the closer one gets to the center of the vertical shaft.[6] More savage and dangerous creatures are often found in areas where the Force Field is most prevalent, and the branches of vegetation always point towards the center of the hole, their main source of energy for undergoing photosynthesis.[7] Delvers use this fact to guide themselves when they are lost. The Force Field itself is invisible to the naked eye, but it can be detected as a vague fog that limits the vision of humans.[8][9] The field is also constantly moving, following the movements of living beings to the point of breathing being enough to change its flow, and altering its flow as it responds to their consciousness. There are a few specific spots in The Abyss, usually far away from the center and in secluded areas, where the Force Field doesn't exist or is extremely weak.[10] The great pit also appears to have some form of time distortion. This is evidenced by Ganja having arrived at The Abyss at a point in time before the first Delvers and a native tribe still existed, yet, according to Wazukyan, only 150 years have passed since the creation of The Village of Iruburu in the 6th Layer.[11] The White Whistle Delver Ozen claims that the deeper one delves, the more one's sense of time breaks, with the effect becoming extreme from the 5th Layer onwards. As an example, she noted people might intend to stay on the 5th Layer just a few weeks, but by the time they return to the surface, several months had passed. As such, Ozen considers it a possibility a decade on the surface may be akin to a few years on the bottom of The Abyss.[12] Though The Abyss is riddled with countless dangers and hazards, one of the greatest challenges facing Delvers is, in fact, the ascent from it. This is due to a phenomenon called the The Curse of the Abyss. The term refers to a series of symptoms that manifest upon ascending while inside The Abyss, with its more scientific name being the "Strains of Ascension". The effects of the Curse manifest after ascending around 10 meters within The Abyss, with no way to avoid it through conventional means.[13] The Curse affects all living things; however, their symptoms may differ from those appearing on humans depending on how close the creature resembles a human.[14] There are more creaturres in the abyss The Force Field Main Article: The Force Field The Force Field is a scarcely understood attribute of The Abyss. It prevents observation of The Abyss from above and prevents vision of the surface from below.[1][15] The Force Field carries sunlight and nutrients throughout The Abyss. Reg acknowledges that when looking up, the boundary of what he can see appears "awfully bright", perhaps moreso than on the surface.[16][15][17] With Layer piled upon Layer, the force field blankets living beings similar to cloth warping around them. In addition to being warped by the movement of creatures, it is sensitive enough that it can also be altered by consciousness itself.[18] Its structure is likened to that of inverted thorns, allowing one to pass through in descent, but harmful when trying to ascend.[18] The Curse of the Abyss results from piercing the force field of The Abyss while ascending, although this fact is not generally known, as Delvers generally lack the ability to observe the forcefield directly.[19] Nanachi refers to the Force Field as "the very blood of The Abyss itself."[18] Rare Phenomenon Birthday Death Disease Main Article: Birthday-Death Disease Abyssal Hair Twirls Main Article: Abyssal Hair Twirls The Blessing of the Abyss An exceedingly rare and top secret phenomenon occasionally takes place within The Abyss under very specific circumstances. It was first discovered by the White Whistle Delver Bondrewd when he was experimenting with the Curse of the 6th Layer. Much like with the Curse of the Abyss, the event occurs during the ascent, but two people are needed to trigger the phenomenon. If one person bears the entire burden of the Curse for both people (through the use of an Artifact or another similar instrument), the other is spared the effects of the curse.[20] Bondrewd modified several Artifacts to create an elevator to observe the Blessing phenomenon. This two-chambered elevator carries two people but forces the entire weight of the Curse onto a single person. If the person receiving the Curse doesn't die midway through, the other is spared the Curse's effects.[21] Bondrewd discovered deep love between the two people results in the event he called a "Blessing" for the one who does not receive the burden of the Curse.[22] While the Blessing was experimentally demonstrated, Bondrewd cannot explain the reasons behind it.[23] The appearance of the blessed changes. They grow fur all over their body and some of their traits, like the eyes or fingers, become mutated. The Blessing is not merely in looks: The one gifted gains the ability to observe The Force Field of The Abyss, something that only the predators of the deep are able to see, and is an incredibly useful ability for delving in the pit. It also appears to increase their physical fortitude to some extent.[24][25] Another side-effect of the blessing appears to be the fulfillment of a desire, as shown by Nanachi obtaining a body that smells particularly nice Abyss Faith A religion that was formed around The Abyss itself, it appears to be a very common belief among those that delve into The Abyss. Instead of believing in a God, those that turn to this religion deify The Abyss itself. Because the bottom is unknown, it replaces a deity and grants them hope for an after-life. It is based on the principle that if one loses one's life within The Abyss, one's soul will depart on a journey to someone who has wished for life. The unreachable depths of the pit makes people believe that it transcends life itself. Layout 1st Layer: Edge of the Abyss Depth: 0~1,350 meters.[2] Strains of Ascent: Light dizziness and nausea.[29] Description: The 1st Layer is the most shallow section of The Abyss, right below the town of Orth. The environment is consistent and sunny, full of hollows in the grassy rock faces and petrified trees. The wildlife consists of fantastical and mostly harmless animals.[30] Scattered and hidden all across the 1st layer are Praying Skeletons. 2nd Layer: Forest of Temptation 2nd Layer Sketch Depth: 1,350~2,600 meters.[2] Strains of Ascent: Intense nausea, headaches, and numbness of limbs.[29] Description: The Forest of Temptation is the first truly dangerous section of The Abyss. The fauna and environment suddenly change, shifting into a forest with large vegetation. The creatures that inhabit this layer are much more dangerous. Deeper in, there is an area known as the "Inverted Forest", where the trees grow upside-down and the updraft wind blows hard, with even water flows upward. An outpost known as Seeker Camp has been established here to serve as a resting point for Delvers.[31][32] 3rd Layer: Great Fault 3rd Layer Sketch Depth: 2,600~7,000 meters.[2] Strains of Ascent: In addition to aforementioned effects, vertigo combined with visual and auditory hallucinations.[29] Description: The 3rd Layer consists of a 4,000 meter vertical cliff, making it a highly challenging area to ascend, save for the large cave network surrounding the main shaft. Countless methods have been implemented in attempt of descending, to varying effects. Aerial predators are common, including Crimson Splitjaws.[33] 4th Layer: The Goblets of Giants 4th-Layer Depth: 7,000~12,000 meters.[2] Strains of Ascent: Intense pain throughout the body and bleeding from every orifice.[29] Description: A strange, humid jungle of strong vines and giant concave discs, which capture water from the air, earned the 4th Layer its name, "Goblets of Giants."[34] At a depth of 9,000 meters, the famous Garden of the Flowers of Resilience can be found. A massive field of Eternal Fortunes, the trademark flower of The Abyss.[2] A truly beautiful sight; though, the danger from the beasts that dwell here is high.[35] 5th Layer: Sea of Corpses 5th-Layer Depth: 12,000~13,000 meters.[2] Strains of Ascent: Complete sensory deprivation, confusion and self-harming behavior.[29] Description: The shortest layer of The Abyss, vertically, being only 1,000 meters deep, but also the widest one, horizontally. According to Riko, it is tens of times wider than the town of Orth.[36] It consists mostly of a large, monster-filled sea with some crystallized sections, held up by a layer of thick slimy water.[37][38] This is the last layer of The Abyss where it is possible to bear the Curse and return alive and intact.[29] An ancient ritual site turned outpost by Bondrewd and his followers, Umbra Hands, Ido Front acts as a gateway into the 6th Layer, the point of no return.[39] 6th Layer: The Capital of the Unreturned 6th-Layer Depth: 13,000~15,500 meters.[2] Strains of Ascent: Loss of humanity or death, or under specific conditions, the Blessing.[29] Description: A White Whistle's last dive. A human who tries to ascend from the 6th Layer either succumbs to death, or is deformed beyond recognition, hence the name, "The Capital of the Unreturned."[40] In Orth, there is a rumor about a Golden City at the bottom of The Abyss, which originated from the 6th Layer, where the ruins of a majestic city sleep undisturbed. The buildings spread in every direction and are covered in crystal.[3][41] It is not uncommon to come across creatures of an irrational danger level here and there even occur geo-thermal explosions that emit poisonous gas and iron rain.[42] Avian species in this layer are unaffected by the bird repellent used on the Mail Balloons that delvers send back up to the surface.[43] In a secluded area of the 6th Layer, an entire village inhabited by Narehate called Iruburu was formed.[44]White Whistles do not have any depth limit; however, since The Curse of the Abyss make it humanly impossible to survive the ascent from the 6th Layer, for most of their life, they limit themselves to the 5th Layer. At some point when they make the decision, a White Whistle will descend into the inviolable 6th Layer. Since returning from this point is impossible, this descent is called the "Last Dive" (็ตถ็•Œ่กŒใƒฉใ‚นใƒˆใƒ€ใ‚คใƒ–, "Last Dive", Crossing of the Absolute Boundary?), and it represents the most important point of their career: delving into largely unknown territory.[18] Their whistles themselves cannot be obtained through conventional means. White Whistles are made out of Life-reverberating Stones, which can only be obtained through the remains of a loved one of the Delver.[19] Once the stone is refined into a White Whistle, it will sound only for the Delver for whom it was created, via a hidden insignia.[20][21] Its sound can bring out the true purpose of some Artifacts.[22][23] All members of the Umbra Hands are considered Black Whistle Delvers, yet some of them were bounty hunters before becoming Umbra Hands.[24] The only White Whistle Delver currently above the 5th Layer is Ozen.[25] Delvers are managed and given their ranks, according to their achievements, by the Delver Guild HQ.[20] The colors for the whistle's and ranks were decided by the colors of the night sky. That is why they go from red, blue, moon etc. Red Whistles were made red so it would be easier to pick them out as beginners as the color is not associated with the night sky but more with early morning. The White Whistles are special because they are not part of the night sky theme.[26] Red Whistle Delvers are usually 10 to 14 years old and stay in the 1st Layer. Blue Whistle Delvers usually need to be 15 or older to achieve this rank and are allowed to delve to the 2nd Layer. Moon Whistle rank is usually reached with about 22 years of age and they are able to live off what they earn by independent excavation while lower ranks, like Blue Whistle Delvers, often have a part-time jobs, such as tourism and service gigs around the town of Orth.[26][27] like the Last Dive, exist for the White Whistle Delvers, but none of them are following these rules.[26] A "Sovereign"-title of a White Whistle Delver is determined by their reputation and the person's intentions, and is also registered in a directory. It is said that it started when a member of a White Whistle Delver team began calling them that for fun. Most of the time, the nicknames are the equivalent of something the newspaper or the public started calling them and they became established due to it. These ones aren't registered in a directory.[28] White Whistle Delvers are at times accompanied in their last dive by Black Whistle Delvers who are part of their squad.[29] People from other countries can become Delvers, but like Riko and the others, they must start with a bell. The key point is following the process put in place by the nation to obtain a whistle after training.[30] Red Whistle Delvers have an agreement to generally not get involved with illegal Delvers. They just report the matter and let other people crack down on it.[30] Whistles function like a license system. After learning the ways of delving and obtaining a Red Whistle, a practical test is conducted, only after which Delvers finally get their license. It takes time to officially become a Delver, so people who don't want to bother access The Abyss via the slums to try to mine in 3rd Layer|the Great Fault illegally.[30] In the extras of the Collector's Edition Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness, the depth limit for Red Whistles is noted to be 450 meters while in the main series their depth limit for delving being 550 meters. Furthermore, the depth limits in this game are 2,600 meters for Blue Whistles, 12,000 meters for Moon Whistles, and 13,000 meters for Black Whistles.[31] According to Riko, whistles used to be made out of cork but, since cork whistles had problems making sounds at stable volumes when wet, they were eventually replaced with their current, improved designs.[32] White Whistles are only permitted to own up to First Grade Artifacts, while Bondrewd is in possession of the Special Grade Artifact Zoaholic. Shiggy, while talking about the different layers, says, "Anyway, we're finally on to the fourth layer! Only Black Whistles and above can go here. [emphasis in original]" and "The fifth layer! This is the domain of White Whistles alone[.]" This is contradicted in the second volume's chart which says the depth limit of Moon Whistles is the fourth layer and that the limit of Black Whistles is the fifth. Bondrewd states in a conversation with another Delver, "Why bring this up now? It's also for this very purpose that I proposed Black Whistles enter the fifth Layer[.]" This suggests a change in the depth limit has occurred at one point and as such, it is possible that Shiggy isn't aware of it. In the game, Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness, Hablog notes Black Whistles are only officially allowed to delve to the 5th Layer if they are accompanying a White Whistle which gives context to why the second volume's chart states the depth limit of Black Whistles is the fifth while Shiggy stated it to be the domain of White Whistles alone. Riko is a fellow orphan and nanachi is a hollow who lives down on the 4rth layer.
