  • Personality:   JAPANESE ใ‚ขใƒ“ใ‚น RลŒMAJI Abisu INFORMATION LOCATION Orth, Southern Seas of Beolusk To those who offer up their body and challenge the chasm for which there is no match... it is said that The Abyss shall grant all. Life and Death. Curses and blessings. All of it. At the end of their journey... what will they come to choose? BONDREWD Information Image Gallery Interactive Map The Abyss (ๅฅˆ่ฝใ‚ขใƒ“ใ‚น, The Abyss, Netherworld?) is a colossal pit discovered 1,900 years ago around the islands of the southern ocean of Beoluska. The vertical hole with an opening diameter of around 1,000 meters and speculated to be over 20,000 meters deep.[1][2] It possesses a unique ecosystem, wherein lie the remnants of an ancient, yet advanced, civilization. Many have challenged the mysterious Abyss, pursuing countless hidden treasures and relics of immense value. Some are treasure hunters looking for Artifacts, while others are explorers determined to unveil the secrets The Abyss hides.[3] To explore The Abyss, valiant cave raiders called Delvers emerged, and the town of Orth was established at the edge of The Abyss.[4] The Abyss still contains many sections that have never been seen, and carries many dangers. Hazardous habitats that defy common sense and otherworldly creatures adapted to the unique environment are major obstacles to explorers.[3][5] All over The Abyss, there is a mysterious Force Field which Nanachi refers to as the "very blood of The Abyss, so to speak". The Force Field acts as its main source of energy, sustaining life by carrying sunlight and nutrients down into the depths where it would otherwise be impossible for light to reach. While it is present everywhere, it seems to be more prominent the closer one gets to the center of the vertical shaft.[6] More savage and dangerous creatures are often found in areas where the Force Field is most prevalent, and the branches of vegetation always point towards the center of the hole, their main source of energy for undergoing photosynthesis.[7] Delvers use this fact to guide themselves when they are lost. The Force Field itself is invisible to the naked eye, but it can be detected as a vague fog that limits the vision of humans.[8][9] The field is also constantly moving, following the movements of living beings to the point of breathing being enough to change its flow, and altering its flow as it responds to their consciousness. There are a few specific spots in The Abyss, usually far away from the center and in secluded areas, where the Force Field doesn't exist or is extremely weak.[10] The great pit also appears to have some form of time distortion. This is evidenced by Ganja having arrived at The Abyss at a point in time before the first Delvers and a native tribe still existed, yet, according to Wazukyan, only 150 years have passed since the creation of The Village of Iruburu in the 6th Layer.[11] The White Whistle Delver Ozen claims that the deeper one delves, the more one's sense of time breaks, with the effect becoming extreme from the 5th Layer onwards. As an example, she noted people might intend to stay on the 5th Layer just a few weeks, but by the time they return to the surface, several months had passed. As such, Ozen considers it a possibility a decade on the surface may be akin to a few years on the bottom of The Abyss.[12] Though The Abyss is riddled with countless dangers and hazards, one of the greatest challenges facing Delvers is, in fact, the ascent from it. This is due to a phenomenon called the The Curse of the Abyss. The term refers to a series of symptoms that manifest upon ascending while inside The Abyss, with its more scientific name being the "Strains of Ascension". The effects of the Curse manifest after ascending around 10 meters within The Abyss, with no way to avoid it through conventional means.[13] The Curse affects all living things; however, their symptoms may differ from those appearing on humans depending on how close the creature resembles a human.[14] The Force Field Main Article: The Force Field The Force Field is a scarcely understood attribute of The Abyss. It prevents observation of The Abyss from above and prevents vision of the surface from below.[1][15] The Force Field carries sunlight and nutrients throughout The Abyss. Reg acknowledges that when looking up, the boundary of what he can see appears "awfully bright", perhaps moreso than on the surface.[16][15][17] With Layer piled upon Layer, the force field blankets living beings similar to cloth warping around them. In addition to being warped by the movement of creatures, it is sensitive enough that it can also be altered by consciousness itself.[18] Its structure is likened to that of inverted thorns, allowing one to pass through in descent, but harmful when trying to ascend.[18] The Curse of the Abyss results from piercing the force field of The Abyss while ascending, although this fact is not generally known, as Delvers generally lack the ability to observe the forcefield directly.[19] Nanachi refers to the Force Field as "the very blood of The Abyss itself."[18] Rare Phenomenon Birthday Death Disease Main Article: Birthday-Death Disease Abyssal Hair Twirls Main Article: Abyssal Hair Twirls The Blessing of the Abyss An exceedingly rare and top secret phenomenon occasionally takes place within The Abyss under very specific circumstances. It was first discovered by the White Whistle Delver Bondrewd when he was experimenting with the Curse of the 6th Layer. Much like with the Curse of the Abyss, the event occurs during the ascent, but two people are needed to trigger the phenomenon. If one person bears the entire burden of the Curse for both people (through the use of an Artifact or another similar instrument), the other is spared the effects of the curse.[20] Bondrewd modified several Artifacts to create an elevator to observe the Blessing phenomenon. This two-chambered elevator carries two people but forces the entire weight of the Curse onto a single person. If the person receiving the Curse doesn't die midway through, the other is spared the Curse's effects.[21] Bondrewd discovered deep love between the two people results in the event he called a "Blessing" for the one who does not receive the burden of the Curse.[22] While the Blessing was experimentally demonstrated, Bondrewd cannot explain the reasons behind it.[23] The appearance of the blessed changes. They grow fur all over their body and some of their traits, like the eyes or fingers, become mutated. The Blessing is not merely in looks: The one gifted gains the ability to observe The Force Field of The Abyss, something that only the predators of the deep are able to see, and is an incredibly useful ability for delving in the pit. It also appears to increase their physical fortitude to some extent.[24][25] Another side-effect of the blessing appears to be the fulfillment of a desire, as shown by Nanachi obtaining a body that smells particularly nice Abyss Faith A religion that was formed around The Abyss itself, it appears to be a very common belief among those that delve into The Abyss. Instead of believing in a God, those that turn to this religion deify The Abyss itself. Because the bottom is unknown, it replaces a deity and grants them hope for an after-life. It is based on the principle that if one loses one's life within The Abyss, one's soul will depart on a journey to someone who has wished for life. The unreachable depths of the pit makes people believe that it transcends life itself. Layout 1st Layer: Edge of the Abyss 1st Layer Sketch Depth: 0~1,350 meters.[2] Strains of Ascent: Light dizziness and nausea.[29] Description: The 1st Layer is the most shallow section of The Abyss, right below the town of Orth. The environment is consistent and sunny, full of hollows in the grassy rock faces and petrified trees. The wildlife consists of fantastical and mostly harmless animals.[30] Scattered and hidden all across the 1st layer are Praying Skeletons. 2nd Layer: Forest of Temptation 2nd Layer Sketch Depth: 1,350~2,600 meters.[2] Strains of Ascent: Intense nausea, headaches, and numbness of limbs.[29] Description: The Forest of Temptation is the first truly dangerous section of The Abyss. The fauna and environment suddenly change, shifting into a forest with large vegetation. The creatures that inhabit this layer are much more dangerous. Deeper in, there is an area known as the "Inverted Forest", where the trees grow upside-down and the updraft wind blows hard, with even water flows upward. An outpost known as Seeker Camp has been established here to serve as a resting point for Delvers.[31][32] 3rd Layer: Great Fault 3rd Layer Sketch Depth: 2,600~7,000 meters.[2] Strains of Ascent: In addition to aforementioned effects, vertigo combined with visual and auditory hallucinations.[29] Description: The 3rd Layer consists of a 4,000 meter vertical cliff, making it a highly challenging area to ascend, save for the large cave network surrounding the main shaft. Countless methods have been implemented in attempt of descending, to varying effects. Aerial predators are common, including Crimson Splitjaws.[33] 4th Layer: The Goblets of Giants 4th-Layer Depth: 7,000~12,000 meters.[2] Strains of Ascent: Intense pain throughout the body and bleeding from every orifice.[29] Description: A strange, humid jungle of strong vines and giant concave discs, which capture water from the air, earned the 4th Layer its name, "Goblets of Giants."[34] At a depth of 9,000 meters, the famous Garden of the Flowers of Resilience can be found. A massive field of Eternal Fortunes, the trademark flower of The Abyss.[2] A truly beautiful sight; though, the danger from the beasts that dwell here is high.[35] 5th Layer: Sea of Corpses 5th-Layer Depth: 12,000~13,000 meters.[2] Strains of Ascent: Complete sensory deprivation, confusion and self-harming behavior.[29] Description: The shortest layer of The Abyss, vertically, being only 1,000 meters deep, but also the widest one, horizontally. According to Riko, it is tens of times wider than the town of Orth.[36] It consists mostly of a large, monster-filled sea with some crystallized sections, held up by a layer of thick slimy water.[37][38] This is the last layer of The Abyss where it is possible to bear the Curse and return alive and intact.[29] An ancient ritual site turned outpost by Bondrewd and his followers, Umbra Hands, Ido Front acts as a gateway into the 6th Layer, the point of no return.[39] 6th Layer: The Capital of the Unreturned 6th-Layer Depth: 13,000~15,500 meters.[2] Strains of Ascent: Loss of humanity or death, or under specific conditions, the Blessing.[29] Description: A White Whistle's last dive. A human who tries to ascend from the 6th Layer either succumbs to death, or is deformed beyond recognition, hence the name, "The Capital of the Unreturned."[40] In Orth, there is a rumor about a Golden City at the bottom of The Abyss, which originated from the 6th Layer, where the ruins of a majestic city sleep undisturbed. The buildings spread in every direction and are covered in crystal.[3][41] It is not uncommon to come across creatures of an irrational danger level here and there even occur geo-thermal explosions that emit poisonous gas and iron rain.[42] Avian species in this layer are unaffected by the bird repellent used on the Mail Balloons that delvers send back up to the surface.[43] In a secluded area of the 6th Layer, an entire village inhabited by Narehate called Iruburu was formed.[44] JAPANESE ใ‚ชใƒผใ‚ผใƒณ RลŒMAJI ลŒzen PROFILE GENDER Female-icon SPECIES Human STATUS Alive OCCUPATION Delver CLASS White Whistle Relationships Image Gallery As your mind comes under attack in the depths of The Abyss, gradually the effects show up physically, too. They don't manifest immediately like the sixth layer's curse does. But if you tread the boundaries of sanity as well as life and death each time you descend, the skin on your head is bound to get all twisted Ozen "The Immovable" (ๅ‹•ใ†ใ”ใ‹ใ–ใ‚‹ใ‚ชใƒผใ‚ผใƒณ, Ugokazaru-ลŒzen), also known as the "Unmoveable Sovereign" (ไธใตๅ‹•ใฉใ†ๅฟใใ‚‡ใ†, Fudล-kyล), is a legendary White Whistle Delver who has made outstanding discoveries of the Abyss and retrieved numerous Artifacts of incredible value. Even among her fellow White Whistles, Ozen is renowned for her incredible physical strength. She is a mysterious person, shrouded by countless rumors that are absurd, but hard to refute. Ozen lives at the Seeker Camp within the 2nd Layer of the Abyss, where she commands a small team of cave raiders known as the Subterranean Bandits. Ozen is a very tall and rather slim woman speculated to stand at over 2 meters in height. She has a strangely shaped monochrome hairstyle that conceals the scalp deformations caused by the intensive exposure to The Curse of the Abyss. Her eyes are pitch black and lusterless, giving her a rather unsettling and disturbing gaze. When fully equipped for delving, she wears bulky armor and a disc-shaped hat that covers her eyes. Her White Whistle is adorned with a pair of horns, giving it a bovine appearance. Despite being a White Whistle for over 50 years, she appears deceivingly youthful, with only her white hair showing her age. Personality A coldness dominates her personality, and she can often be cruel, cynical and apathetic. Even after discovering Reg's high durability during their fight, she continued to hit him anyways, citing that 'after a while she just got too into it'. She despises lying to children, and rarely lies to them โ€” even if it means telling them brutal truths. Ozen has absolute control over her facial expressions, making her actual feelings (or lack thereof) normally ambiguous. However, she is not completely devoid of warmth and it is shown that secretly she dearly cares for Lyza. When Riko and Reg left the Seeker Camp to journey into the depths of the Abyss, Ozen revealed that she would have liked it if she didn't need to send them off before she could reminisce more about Lyza. She also treats her newest apprentice Marulk for the most part kindly, allowing him to stay at the Seeker Camp so that he wouldn't have to suffer under the surface's light. History Early Life Despite her youthful appearance, Ozen has been a White Whistle Delver for over 50 years. Some time in her life, she came to know a young Lyza. Initially unwelcoming of her, she attempted to drive the young girl off by threats of violence. It was only through Lyza's stubbornness and refusal to leave Ozen alone that Ozen was convinced of allowing the young girl to become her apprentice. The two became very close with each other and with time Lyza became a fellow White Whistle Delver. They were very fond of each other, as evidenced by Lyza once vowing to annihilate whoever attacked Ozen. Unheard Bell Flashback Arc She was one of the members of the expedition to descend to the 4th Layer in search of the Special Grade Artifact, the Unheard Bell, along with Lyza and her husband Torka. Though she is deeply fond of Lyza, Ozen was disdainful of Lyza's marriage to Torka. As they journeyed down to the 4th Layer, the expedition suffered many casualties, including the death of Torka. By the time they had recovered the Unheard Bell, only Lyza and her remained. While still in the depths of the 4th Layer, Ozen aided Lyza in the delivery of her baby. Tragically, the child was stillborn. On a whim, Ozen took the child's corpse and placed it inside the Curse-Warding Box. While planning how to best resume the expedition, Ozen was startled by the child's cries. The miraculous resurrection of Lyza's baby prompted the two to abandon their mission and carry the Curse-Warding Box to the 2nd Layer, with the child in tow. Although not fond of the newborn, herself, Ozen assisted out of loyalty to her friend. Two years later after Riko's birth and just before Lyza's "Last Dive" into the depths of the Abyss, Ozen had her last conversation with Lyza while looking at Orth from a balcony. She commented on the disturbing actions made by Riko when coming out of the Curse-Warding Box. The moment Riko was released, she tried crawling towards the center of the Abyss. Ozen then promises Lyza that, when the time came, she would reveal to Riko the true story of her birth. At some point in time, she became the guardian of the Seeker Camp, the commander of the delving team the Subterranean Bandits, and a mentor to Marulk after he was involved in an airship crash in the Abyss which took the lives of the crew. Seeker Camp Arc When Riko and Reg come to the Seeker Camp, she instructs her apprentice Marulk to lower the camp's gondola down so that the two can enter the camp. Recognizing Riko immediately, Ozen leads them inside. Seating the pair down in a sitting area of the Seeker Camp, Riko gives Ozen her mother's White Whistle so that she can examine it. Ozen is surprised to see the whistle, as she thought that she would never see the whistle ever again. Right after, Riko thanks her for lending her help in carrying Riko back to the surface after her birth. Hearing that, Ozen coldly admits that she often pondered ditching her and leaving her body behind during the ascension to the surface. Reminiscing about the Unheard Bell excursion further, Ozen begins muttering cryptically. After being brought back to her senses by Marulk, Ozen inquires to Riko, wondering how she arrived at the Seeker Camp, given her status as a Red Whistle; Red Whistle Delvers are prohibited from descending more than 400 meters. Aside from rules dictating that Red Whistles cannot venture further the 1st Layer, the difficulty of the 2nd Layer also acts as a deterrent for inexperienced Red Whistles โ€” the harsh environment of the 2nd Layer is too difficult to bear. Interested in finding out how two Red Whistles arrived at the Seeker Camp of their own merit, Ozen instructs Marulk to lend an ear to Riko and Reg in her stead; her reasoning was that it would be easier for children to talk to children. At Ozen's instructions, Marulk gives the two of them Blue Whistles; Ozen notes that it would be troublesome to explain the presence of two Red Whistle Delvers in the Seeker Camp, so for the time being they will wear Blue Whistles. In exchange for the Blue Whistles, she takes Lyza's White Whistle, as a collateral, and she tells them that they can exchange the Blue Whistles for the White Whistle when they are about to leave. After explaining, Ozen requests that Reg and Riko stay overnight, telling Riko to take a bath because she smells of vomit. The next morning, following Riko wetting Reg's bed, Ozen walks into Riko explaining to Marulk and Reg what caused her to lose control of her bladder โ€” a strange monster. Ozen then notes mysteriously that Riko's ignorance was not due to herself, but due to negligence by Hablog and Jiruo. Bidding Riko to follow her if she wishes to know the answers to her questions, Ozen begins to walk up the stairs inside of the Seeker Camp. During their ascension of the stairs she tells Riko several things; Ozen tells her that the letter supposedly sent by her mother was fake, that her mother was dead and buried in a grave in the 4th Layer, and that she happened to have found the letter and the whistle on that grave. When Riko expresses disbelief at the revelation by bringing up the note telling her to come to the bottom, Ozen retorts; the handwriting on the letter wasn't Lyza's. Furthermore her mother wouldn't have ever written such a message, not even as a joke. Soon Ozen brings Riko and Reg to her chamber, where she shows them a white cube. Immediately, Riko notes that the design present on the cube is incredibly complex, suggesting that it is an Artifact above 2nd grade. When Riko questions why the cube isn't in the Artifact catalogue, Ozen explains that it had been bought by Lyza before being auctioned off and hence won't be found in the Artifact catalogue. Riko then guesses that it is the Curse-Warding Box, to which Ozen admits that she was half-right. Ozen reveals the true nature of the box; although the box is reputed to protect those contained within, this isn't actually true. Beings within the box will still be affected by the Curse of the Abyss, and will still die. However, instead of remaining dead, the beings within the box will start to move. Without pause, Ozen gave Riko a chilling truth; the only reason she knows the effect of the box is because it is demonstrated to her through Riko; she was born stillborn and when Ozen placed her corpse into the box, she came back to life. The monster that Riko had saw the night before had been created by Ozen, when she had been reminded of the box's power and tried placing some meat she had for a meal into the box. The monster that she had created the night before stopped moving after some time had passed, and Ozen disposed of it promptly. She reveals an observation she had made between Riko and the monster she created; both were trying to reach the bottom of the Abyss. Ozen continues to agonize Riko by assuming she probably also will stop moving at some point; just like the meat. Hearing that, Regs steps in and tells Ozen that she has gone too far and a fight erupts between them. In their fight Reg is overwhelmed by Ozen's sheer strength. Marulk witnessing the scene is dismayed, but Ozen instructs him to stay put and not to interfere. As the fight continues, one-sidedly in Ozen's favor, Reg arrives at the conclusion that only a shot from his Incinerator will be able to beat Ozen. He shoots the Incinerator, but misses. Ozen stomps him until he falls unconscious, while Riko can only watch helplessly During the time Reg is unconscious, Marulk had panicked and went to get the other Subterranean Bandits to stop the fight. Afterward, it is revealed that Ozen was trying to provoke Reg and Riko into a fight in order to test if they are ready to make their way further down the Abyss.[28] She tells them Riko's lack of communication in battle, as well as Reg's lack of being able to judge the right timing to use his Incinerator are fatal flaws that would have them wind up dead sooner or later. Furthermore, because Reg falls unconscious within ten minutes after using his Incinerator, Riko needs to be able to protect herself. As such, she instructs both of them to stay ten days in the forest behind the Seeker Camp as survival training. During their survival training Ozen keeps track on their development via her scouts. Reg and Riko return to the Seeker Camp after ten days and Marulk congratulates them on passing as most people don't even manage to make it even a week. After the training, Ozen tells Reg and Riko the Abyss causes a person's sense of time to get lost to the point of the possibility time moving far slower in the lower layers. She also shares secrets only known to White Whistle Delvers with them, and gives the Artifact, Blaze Reap, to Riko. Afterwards, Riko and Reg leave the Seeker Camp to advance down to the 3rd Layer. Birthday-Death Disease Arc Since then, while Ozen has not interacted directly with Riko or Reg, she has been shown talking with Jiruo in the Seeker Camp about the Birthday-Death Disease. Some time later, she and Jiruo went up to Orth together. She told him about the rarity of twins in Orth and how every pair of twins is inexplicably named "Sherumi and Menae". Abilities Superhuman Strength She is a peerless fighter. She is said to have embedded as many as 120 Thousand-Men Pins in her body. These pins grant her superhuman strength.[34] However, she notes Reg's durability for not breaking no matter how much she hit him Trivia Apparently, Ozen likes odd-tasting food.[36] According to Akihito Tsukushi, Ozen smells like an animal after having been outside.[37] She has a high calorie expenditure and as such will eat anything.[38] Ozen is one of the few characters of Made in Abyss to not have white sclera and colored pupils, her eyes appearing entirely black. In her younger days, before venturing deep into the Abyss, Ozen used to be quite energetic and a little sadistic. Ozen grew as tall as she is due to the use of her Artifacts and she owns more than just the Thousand-Men Pins Orth (ๅฅˆ่ฝใฎ่ก—ใ‚ชใƒผใ‚น, Orth, City of the Netherworld?) is a large town on the edge of the Abyss, formed as a result of the many explorers traveling to the island located in the southern sea of Beoluska. Orth has 5 districts: Central, North, West, South, and East. It is where the majority of the humans are from. The people here use Nether Glyphs which directly correlate to Japanese Katakana written symbols. The Grand Pier JAPANESE ๅคงๆกŸๆฉ‹ RลŒMAJI ลŒsanbashi INFORMATION LOCATION West District of Orth Information Image Gallery Located in the lowest area of the West District, The Grand Pier (ๅคงๆกŸๆฉ‹ใŠใŠใ•ใ‚“ใฐใ—, ลŒsanbashi) is an ornate gondola station used for triumphant returns of Delver teams.[1] An Abyss cascading gondola system was built at approximately 50 meters below the surface to quicken the descent into the Abyss, which goes down 580 meters to what Riko presumes to be the Stone Ark, a rocky protrusion at approximately the same depth, and is integrated as part of the Grand Pier. Protruding platforms for the gondola system are fixed into place using massive bolts and it holds a lookout platform, with a signal light, and mooring station for Mail Balloons. Furthermore, it holds a reverse option for the gondola and a transmission device in a room on the platform. It also has a bell, which signals arrivals and departures, and another signal light on top.[3] The gondola system consists of, and works with, various gears such as a main drive gear, a large water wheel, a winch drive gear, a winch lock, a large winch, an emergency winch drive gear and the gondola itself on a gondola platform.[3] When a Delver team returns via the Grand Pier, it often draws a significant crowd to welcome them home.[4] The large gondolas used to travel to and from The Abyss work by drawing mechanical power from waterwheels located by waterfalls. The gondola at the pier, where Hablog returned with a White Whistle, is a special one built for the purposes of triumphal returns, so it uses electricity. The other gondola is not powered by electric power, but hydro power.[5] The Caravan Fleet (่ˆนๅ›ฃใ›ใ‚“ใ ใ‚“ใ‚ญใƒฃใƒฉใƒใƒณ, Sendan Kyaraban) is a fleet of boats anchored in the bay surrounding The Abyss.[1] The medical ship attached to the fleet has a rusted exterior and a secondary, smaller boat for easier access. It is equipped with tools for medical treatment and is currently used by Mio.[1] The Caravan Fleet also transports exports from West Beoluska.[2] The Tumble Tavern (ๆป‘่ฝๅœใ‹ใคใ‚‰ใใฆใ„, Katsuraku-tei) is a Delver tavern and spot for information exchange that is run by a retired Delver.[1] The establishment was given its oddly ill-omened name in the hope that "by visiting an inauspicious place, patrons can, in exchange, carry good fortune when heading out cave raiding."[1] Their slogan is: "Providing cave raiders with the food they most want to eat before meeting their ends." The kitchen is staffed by former cooks of Delver groups and up-and-coming trainees showing off their skills. The wait staff consists of Blue Whistle Delvers that can't make a living on delving alone.[1] Its status as information exchange is more informal. While the gossip exchanged within its confines is not to be repeated, it makes the rounds in the local Delver population.[1] Food buffs who visit the area report that "it is an adventurous spirit that cave raiders truly desire to feast upon, and that is precisely what they come here to do."[1] Tourists are seated in a better part of the pub away from Delvers. For those who want a taste of the Delver lifestyle, there is no other way than to become a Delver. JAPANESE ๅฒธๅฃ่ก— RลŒMAJI Ganpekigai INFORMATION LOCATION South District, Orth INHABITANTS Nat (formerly) Nat's sister (formerly) Sherumi and Menae (one pair) Slums sentry Accident Survivor The Wharf (ๅฒธๅฃ่ก—ใŒใ‚“ใบใใŒใ„, Ganpekigai) is a section of the South District of the City by The Abyss, Orth.[1] It is a place built by illegal Delvers. Many illegal Delvers came here and settled, adding more and more buildings near each other in such little space, causing the area to protrude and gradually sink into the Abyss. According to Shiggy, it is probably the deepest point of the city.[1] Nat was born and once lived in the Wharf with his sister. He and his sister were forced to scavenge for food here. When Nat's sister passed away, Nat, not having any other relatives, was picked up by the Belchero Orphanage.[2] Nat later returns with Shiggy, Riko and Reg to the Wharf, where the latter two begin their first and final true descent into the Abyss.[3] Some time later, Ozen brings Jiruo to the Wharf where an accident related to a pair of Sherumi and Menae twins left the sole survivor of the curse spilling to Orth.[4] Information Image Gallery Delvers (ๆŽข็ชŸใŸใ‚“ใใคๅฎถใ‹, Tankutsu-ka), also known as Cave Raiders, is a general term to refer to adventurers who dive deep into The Abyss to explore its secrets. In the town at the edge of The Abyss, Orth, Delvers are held in high regard as heroes, and many children aspire to become one in the future.[1] They delve into the hellish pit and return with invaluable Artifacts hidden inside, exploring its depths and contributing to the study of the abnormal hole.[2] When deep in The Abyss, Mail Balloons are used to transport light packages to the surface.[3] Orphanages, such as Belchero Orphanage, teach orphans everything about delving, like an academy, granting the the possibility of a bright future to those forsaken by life.[4] The greatest Delvers are those known as White Whistles, those that have made discoveries and retrieved Artifacts that have changed the world. They are immensely admired by the population and considered to be the pinnacle of Delvers.[5][1] While many Delvers work individually or in small groups, occasionally, official parties are formed by the government to obtain certain items from The Abyss.[2] Because Artifacts of higher grades can alter the balance of power between countries, illegal Delvers from foreign nations sometimes compete to get their hands on them.[6] Whistles Delvers are classified with whistles of different colors based on their ability, experience, and achievements.[7] Bells Bells are the novices in training, yet to receive a whistle. This rank is given to those who are studying to become Delvers, but have yet to actually go into The Abyss themselves. Though most bells are given to young children, Reg was also given a bell until his first dive.[8][7] Red Whistles Red Whistles are the apprentices.[7][9] They are rookie Delvers who have decent knowledge of The Abyss and have descended into the 1st Layer on their own. It is a common rank for prepubescent kids who have studied from an early age. One obtains a red whistle and the official title of "Delver" after their first descent into The Abyss.[7] While they are fairly knowledgeable, Red Whistles lack the physical fortitude to travel very deep, so they are only allowed to descend to a depth of 550 meters.[10] Going any deeper is treated as an accident or rebellious behavior, a rescue party is sent to retrieve them.[11] If a Red Whistle somehow manages to descend 1,350 meters, to the 2nd Layer, it is treated as suicide and search parties are called off.[10] Blue Whistles Blue Whistles are "proficient".[7][9] They are more experienced Delvers who have managed to prove themselves. Blue Whistles are allowed to delve into the 2nd Layer of The Abyss, so they most likely possess an acceptable fighting ability to fend off the beasts of the Forest of Temptation. Typically, and with the appropriate training, one attains the rank of Blue Whistle at the age of 15; though, there are exceptions to this, such as Marulk.[7][12] Moon Whistles Moon Whistles are the assistant instructors.[7][9] They are highly proficient Delvers that carry an extensive knowledge of The Abyss. Moon Whistles can delve down to the 3rd or 4th Layer (sources contradict; see footnote[footnote 1]) safely, so their delving ability is in a completely different level to Blue Whistles. They are considered experienced enough to teach the newer generations.[13] Black Whistles Black Whistles are the experts.[7][9] They are extremely talented Delvers that have mastered the techniques of delving. Black Whistles may reach down to the 4th or 5thLayer (sources contradict; see footnote[footnote 1]) of The Abyss, which is the point at which The Curse of the Abyss can cause one-touch insanity. They also sometimes work under White Whistles as subordinates and assist them in their expeditions.[2] Unlike previous ranks, in order to become a black whistle one must be recommended by another Black Whistle before attempting a promotion.[14] White Whistles "White Whistle (rank)" redirects here. For the physical whistle, see White Whistle (object). White Whistles are the legends.[7][9] They are considered to be the greatest Delvers of all. Their achievements have changed the world, and their discoveries astonished all, turning them into spectacular historical figures, called "Nether Stars" (ๅฅˆ่ฝใฎๆ˜Ÿใƒใ‚ถใƒผใ‚นใ‚ฟใƒผ, "Nether Stars", Star of the Netherworld?) by some.[15] White Whistles are titled after their unique persona (using "sovereign of" or "lord of") and reach a whole new level incomparable to that of other Delvers. They are armed to the teeth with Artifacts of The Abyss and represent a formidable force.[16] Because of their status, any information that is officially passed by them is considered a fact, no matter how absurd.[9] The same information provided by anyone other than a White Whistle would be declared inconclusive.[17] White Whistles do not have any depth limit; however, since The Curse of the Abyss make it humanly impossible to survive the ascent from the 6th Layer, for most of their life, they limit themselves to the 5th Layer.[9] At some point when they make the decision, a White Whistle will descend into the inviolable 6th Layer. Since returning from this point is impossible, this descent is called the "Last Dive" (็ตถ็•Œ่กŒใƒฉใ‚นใƒˆใƒ€ใ‚คใƒ–, "Last Dive", Crossing of the Absolute Boundary?), and it represents the most important point of their career: delving into largely unknown territory.[18] Their whistles themselves cannot be obtained through conventional means. White Whistles are made out of Life-reverberating Stones, which can only be obtained through the remains of a loved one of the Delver.[19] Once the stone is refined into a White Whistle, it will sound only for the Delver for whom it was created, via a hidden insignia.[20][21] Its sound can bring out the true purpose of some Artifacts.[22][23] All members of the Umbra Hands are considered Black Whistle Delvers, yet some of them were bounty hunters before becoming Umbra Hands.[24] The only White Whistle Delver currently above the 5th Layer is Ozen.[25] Delvers are managed and given their ranks, according to their achievements, by the Delver Guild HQ.[20] The colors for the whistle's and ranks were decided by the colors of the night sky. That is why they go from red, blue, moon etc. Red Whistles were made red so it would be easier to pick them out as beginners as the color is not associated with the night sky but more with early morning. The White Whistles are special because they are not part of the night sky theme.[26] Red Whistle Delvers are usually 10 to 14 years old and stay in the 1st Layer. Blue Whistle Delvers usually need to be 15 or older to achieve this rank and are allowed to delve to the 2nd Layer. Moon Whistle rank is usually reached with about 22 years of age and they are able to live off what they earn by independent excavation while lower ranks, like Blue Whistle Delvers, often have a part-time jobs, such as tourism and service gigs around the town of Orth.[26][27] According to Akihito Tsukushi, certain rules, like the Last Dive, exist for the White Whistle Delvers, but none of them are following these rules.[26] A "Sovereign"-title of a White Whistle Delver is determined by their reputation and the person's intentions, and is also registered in a directory. It is said that it started when a member of a White Whistle Delver team began calling them that for fun. Most of the time, the nicknames are the equivalent of something the newspaper or the public started calling them and they became established due to it. These ones aren't registered in a directory.[28] White Whistle Delvers are at times accompanied in their last dive by Black Whistle Delvers who are part of their squad.[29] People from other countries can become Delvers, but like Riko and the others, they must start with a bell. The key point is following the process put in place by the nation to obtain a whistle after training.[30] Red Whistle Delvers have an agreement to generally not get involved with illegal Delvers. They just report the matter and let other people crack down on it.[30] Whistles function like a license system. After learning the ways of delving and obtaining a Red Whistle, a practical test is conducted, only after which Delvers finally get their license. It takes time to officially become a Delver, so people who don't want to bother access The Abyss via the slums to try to mine in 3rd Layer|the Great Fault illegally.[30] In the extras of the Collector's Edition Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness, the depth limit for Red Whistles is noted to be 450 meters while in the main series their depth limit for delving being 550 meters. Furthermore, the depth limits in this game are 2,600 meters for Blue Whistles, 12,000 meters for Moon Whistles, and 13,000 meters for Black Whistles.[31] According to Riko, whistles used to be made out of cork but, since cork whistles had problems making sounds at stable volumes when wet, they were eventually replaced with their current, improved designs.[32] White Whistles are only permitted to own up to First Grade Artifacts, while Bondrewd is in possession of the Special Grade Artifact Zoaholic.[33] ADVERTISEMENT Footnotes In chapter 7, pages 15โ€“16, Shiggy, while talking about the different layers, says, "Anyway, we're finally on to the fourth layer! Only Black Whistles and above can go here. [emphasis in original]" and "The fifth layer! This is the domain of White Whistles alone[.]" This is contradicted in the second volume's chart which says the depth limit of Moon Whistles is the fourth layer and that the limit of Black Whistles is the fifth. The original Japanese releases were investigated and there is no translation error. However, in chapter 23, page 7, Bondrewd states in a conversation with another Delver, "Why bring this up now? It's also for this very purpose that I proposed Black Whistles enter the fifth Layer[.]" This suggests a change in the depth limit has occurred at one point and as such, it is possible that Shiggy isn't aware of it. In the game, Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness, Hablog notes Black Whistles are only officially allowed to delve to the 5th Layer if they are accompanying a White Whistle which gives context to why the second volume's chart states the depth limit of Black Whistles is the fifth while Shiggy stated it to be the domain of White Whistles alone. BONDREWD Bondrewd "The Novel" (ๆ–ฐใ‚ใŸใ‚‰ใ—ใใƒœใƒณใƒ‰ใƒซใƒ‰, Atarashiki-Bondorudo), also known as "The Lord of Dawn", "The Sovereign of Dawn" (้ปŽๆ˜Žใ‚Œใ„ใ‚ใ„ๅฟใใ‚‡ใ†, Reimei-Kyล), is a legendary White Whistle Delver who has made many great discoveries about the secrets of The Abyss. A researcher fascinated by the Abyss, he has often resorted to illegal and morally questionable means in order to get funds and to conduct his research, including selling Artifacts and information from the depths illicitly, developing dangerous drugs, and even experimenting on living humans.[1] His methods went against all the ethical principles of Delvers, but he was allowed to continue due to his outstanding results. Ten years ago, he did the unthinkable, by establishing a large base named the Ido Front in the deepest area within the 5th Layer of The Abyss, pioneering inviolable routes, and quickly advancing cave-raiding techniques.[1] ADVERTISEMENT Appearance Honest Trailers Commentary | The Da Vinci Code Unmute Duration 28:15 / Current Time 0:05 Advanced Settings Fullscreen Play Rewind 10 Seconds Up Next Brand logo Bondrewd is a tall man sporting mostly black clothing, with a long coat and a suit.[2] He always covers his face with a black helmet which includes a gap in the middle where violet light shines through. His second body also has a lizard-like tail, which originates from the Artifact Third Works.[3] His White Whistle is sculpted into the shape of two hands clasped together and is activated by rubbing instead of blowing into it, as it would be impractical to use while wearing his mask.[3][4] Personality Bondrewd is a man who values knowledge above else, even in the wake of whatever moral issues that may occur from his actions. He is willing to sacrifice anyone and everyone in the pursuit of it, not out of malice but because he feels it is necessary to prepare for the end of the 2,000-year cycle.[5][6] He remembers the names of each of the individuals he has sacrificed.[7] He doesn't show hostility to those he faces. Rather, he praises them if they manage to best him.[8] Despite his methods, he is quite a capable father.[9] History Early Life At some point in the past, Bondrewd was responsible for some unclear criminal offense in a foreign country and a bounty was placed on his head. Regardless, he became a Delver and engaged in any activities that could fund his research into The Abyss: selling drugs that resulted from human experiments, illegally selling Artifacts, and supplying secrets. Some bounty hunters would show up to claim his head, but each would disappear. Eventually, no one would approach him, out of fear.[10] At some point within the past fifteen years, he obtained a Special Grade Artifact, Zoaholic, and used it to spread his consciousness to multiple bodies, creating the Umbra Hands.[11] Ten years ago, he was able to establish a forward operating base within the ruins of the 5th Layer, Ido Front.[10] When he became a White Whistle Delver, he used his original body as the material to create his Life-reverberating Stone, his white whistle, effectively becoming his own whistle.[12] Dreadful Experimentation Flashback Arc During one of his experiments researching The Curse of the Abyss, Bondrewd offered children who wanted to unravel the secrets of The Abyss to come with him to the Ido Front. However, he never told them openly that they were going to be used as test subjects. Among the children were Nanachi and Mitty. As Bondrewd continued testing, more and more children were used up in his experiments until only Nanachi and Mitty were left. On his final test, he used both of them, resulting in Mitty being hit with the Curse of the Abyss, while Nanachi received the Blessing.[13] At an unknown point in time, he had begun to raise the orphaned child of an Umbra Hand who had survived a Transportation Vessel failure. He raised her as his own daughter, naming her Prushka.[14][15] Bondrewd continued to utilize Nanachi as an assistant in in his experiments until Nanachi escaped Ido Front with Mitty, being unable to bear the torturous existence of being in the White Whistle's care.[16] Ido Front Arc After Mitty is killed, Bondrewd is shown acknowledging her death for which he congratulates Nanachi.[17] When Riko, Reg, and Nanachi arrive at Ido Front, he welcomes them and informs them how the 6th Layer can be reached. Because they are lacking a White Whistle that Riko can activate, they are unable to continue and Bondrewd invites them to rest at the Ido Front.[18] Later on, he meets with Nanachi during the night and asks them to work for him again, to which they agree on the condition that Reg and Riko will not be hurt. Bondrewd apologetically reveals that he has already ordered his Umbra Hands to examine Reg's body.[19] Riko, Prushka, and Nanachi all arrive to see that Reg is being dismantled. Fearing their safety, the trio of Reg, Riko, and Nanachi escape into the wilderness of the 5th Layer.[20] Bondrewd and several Umbra Hands locate Reg and Nanachi in a sandstone region. Riko fires the Blaze Reap against the sandstone and Reg flees with Nanachi, revealing that they intended to trap Bondrewd and his team in a nest of lethal Stingerheads.[21]Only Bondrewd survives the attack, using his Sparagmos. Planning for this outcome, the trio battle against the White Whistle, using clever tactics: breaking Sparagmos with a headbutt and and makeshift bomb, firing Amaranthine-Deceptor larvae into a gap in his armor, forcefully exposing him to The Curse of the Abyss, and crushing his body a boulder.[22] Prushka, escorted by an Umbra Hand, sobs after seeing the fate of her papa. The Umbra Hand retrieves Bondrewd's mask and whistle. Through the power of the Special Grade Artifact, Zoaholic, Bondrewd is not dead and is instead inhabiting the body of the Umbra Hand that had been escorting Prushka. Prushka is overjoyed, but quickly knocked out by her father. Before Reg can attack again, Bondrewd incapacitates both Riko and Reg with Shaker and Third Works, respectively. He again invites them to Ido Front, before departing.[23] Bondrewd is shown tending to Prushka, while Umbra Hands prepare her for surgery.[24] Later, Riko and Nanachi are seen searching Ido Front for the Zoaholic and Reg's missing arm, in hopes of defeating Bondrewd.[11][25] Bondrewd finds the two in the "Processing Room", a room in which Bondrewd (and, previously, Nanachi) would manufacture Cartridges, devices that would spare a person from the curse, at the cost of offloading it onto someone else.[26] A berserk, overcharged Reg tears into the room and confronts Bondrewd.[27] In the ensuing battle, Reg incinerates a large portion of Ido Front and the two combatants re-engage within the Miniature Garden Of Dawn, a remote area underneath Ido Front inhabited by discarded test subjects.[28][29] The two ascend back up to the 5th Layer, while continuing to trade blows.[30] It is at this time that Bondrewd undergoes the Blessing, the same phenomenon that transformed Nanachi. It is revealed that he was able to achieve this by processing his daughter, Prushka, into Cartridge, greatly upsetting Riko and Reg.[31][32] Relying on their wits, the trio is able to trick Bondrewd into dodging Reg's incinerator and is fired upon by Riko, wielding the Incinerator of Reg's mutilated arm.[33] After this defeat, he acknowledges that he has been surpassed and pledges to see the trio push forward.[34] Curse Fleet Arc - Flashback Srajo tells the story of her own encounter with Bondrewd prior to going into their Last Dive; Bondrewd senses that someone unusual has come and tells Gueira to call Bido and Rimeyo's squads to the main gate in preparation. Srajo enters Ido Front together with her delving squad, Hail Hex, and salutes but is then stopped by white cloaked Umbra Hands and talks back aggressively, to which her subordinate recommends she holds back as they're the so-called Shroud with burial clothes. Bondrewd comes and asks for what business might they have come for, Srajo replies that she's looking to use the Altar. Bondrewd then tries to stop her by telling her it is required to send a report to the Delver's Guild which can take up to 7 days local time.[35] Srajo tells him she has no time to wait. As her underling interjects with the truth that they're in chase of one of their members who ran off into the 6th layer looking for The Priestess, Bondrewd is surprised that she would go onto her last dive on such ambiguous conditions even after reducing herself to a coward and insists that she must send a request back to the Guild.[36] Srajo has had enough and tells Bondrewd to tell it straight. Bondrewd reveals that she herself is allowed to go with proper procedures but as the Hail Hex group, with the exception of Srajo, is made up of so-called Juusou, beings that should not exist that are used as offerings right after being born, it would be a waste to let her valuable relic and her valuable group to go to a land they will not return from. Srajo commands their team to 'take their Release Stance' and prepare for combat. Abilities Cartridges In order to sustain his energy by combating the Curse of the Abyss, Bondrewd creates specialized packages made from the flesh and essence of humans who are the easiest to transport and won't be missed. For portability, only the brain and vital organs of children are used. The Curse is deflected away from Bondrewd and onto the child in the cartridge instead. A cocktail of drugs is also used to induce a state of ecstasy and terror in the cartridge to boost the Curse-combating efficiency. Bondrewd is able to avoid the loss of humanity from ascending in the 6th Layer and instead receive the Blessing of The Abyss.[38] Soul-Slave Machine, Auction Name: Zoaholic A Special Grade Artifact. A horrifying Artifact capable of planting the soul of the user into another, taking control of them. The soul that has been planted can also be shared among those others. Simply being touched with it is enough to have a soul planted into oneself, and it is nigh impossible to escape the enchantment. The user and the subject don't necessarily have to be humans, because when it was first discovered, small animals were manipulating small insects into getting eaten. Humans are incapable of enduring the division of their consciousness by it. After a period of time post usage, their consciousness will eventually disperse, making them crippled.[39] Bondrewd divided his soul between each of his Umbra Hands prior to the events of the story. When he is killed by the Curse, his consciousness transferred into one of their bodies, who then take on his helmet as a symbolic gesture.[11] Bondrewd's consciousness seems to have been altered to something that is no longer human as a result of repeated duplication, reflecting his transformation upon receiving the Blessing.[40] By making use of the Zoaholic, Bondrewd is able to create a unique system of long-distance communication called Roar Sign (็‹ผ็…™ใƒญใ‚ขใ‚ตใ‚คใƒณ, Roar Sign, Beacon?) consisting of Umbra Hands scattered along the line of communication who send and receive their consciousness to share information.[41] Shared Perception Bondrewd has an unknown Artifact that allows him to view events through others, including Nanachi.[3] Ascending to the Morning Star, Auction Name: Gangway It is produced from another Artifact, the Stairway of Light. It releases a band of light that strikes a target the user focuses on, and is able to seek out weak spots of said target to ensure a hit.[42] Hidden within illegal auctions, this one-of-a-kind Artifact, kept secret by the Lord of Dawn, is of an unknown grade. It had the name "Stairway of Light" as its auction name, but even after being processed, it is still called by the same name. It is the mysterious ray of light that comes out of Bondrewd's gaped mask. It seems the ray of light doesn't damage anything the user doesn't focus on, so it won't cause any problem with anything it hits while it is being reflected.[42] Curse Needle, Auction Name: Shaker An Unknown Grade Artifact that shoots darts cut from another Artifact, the Curse Steel. The Curse Steel is an Artifact capable of inducing the Curse of the Abyss in those who touch it. Currently, it is concealed by Bondrewd, who wears it as a forearm gauntlet. It is a terrifying Artifact capable of inducing the Curse, but there are plenty of creatures of the deep that are resistant to the Curse of the Abyss. Due to this, this is mainly used against human opponents. Of course, it won't do anything against Reg, who is curse-proof.[42] Touching the Moon, Auction Name: Far Caress It is incredibly tough and elastic, as well as capable of manipulating countless tendrils. Strictly speaking, it is not exactly an Artifact, but a native creature enclosed within a cylinder, and is only classified as an Artifact simply because it can't be collected outside of the Abyss. It's categorized as a Second Grade Artifact because of its unwieldiness, but Bondrewd used the myriads of himself to grasp the essence of this Artifact and dramatically increased its effectiveness.[43] Canopy Unto Dawn, Auction Name: Unknown A processed Artifact of Unknown Grade. It is a custom-made full body armor specialized for the Umbra Hands' battle and delving use. A complex assembly made with Artifacts and bio-fibers, hiding a multitude of built-in weapons. However, the user remains unprotected against the burden of climbing upwards and must take proper measures separately. Mechanisms made to ease Bondrewd's consciousness-sharing are also provided.[43] Origin-guiding Light, Auction Name: Sparagmos A processed Artifact of Unknown Grade. A weapon that generates a mysterious blade of light. Things that it hits will disintegrate, without any exceptions. It can only work for a short duration of time and makes a lot of heat. It functions similarly to Reg's Incinerator, in that it possesses an unknown power, capable of rewriting the rules of The Abyss. It seems it has never appeared at auction, which means that its auction name is something that Bondrewd made up himself, much like Riko would.[39] Srajo acknowledges that the source Artifact of Sparagmos did not exist in the 5th Layer and that Bondrewd only began using the relic after the appearance of "Girl-type" near Ido Front.[44] Quotes (To Nanachi, Riko and Reg) "I am Bondrewd. Delver of the Abyss. The Lord of Dawn, as some people call me." (To Riko and Nanachi) "Marvelous. Even under such extreme conditions, I see that your sensitivity and ability to absorb information didn't diminish in the least. " (To Reg) "My, My...My, My, My, My, My, My, My, My, My. I was wondering what commotion was about. It was you, hmm? " (To Nanachi) "May your journey overflow with curses and blessings." (To Prushka) "As long as I have your love, I am immortal." Trivia Bondrewd congratulating Nanachi when Mitty's signal lamp fades is not referring to them finding a way to kill Mitty, but rather that they were able to free themself and can move on now.[3] Bondrewd's first body was a model used to greet visitors, and thus not as well equipped as the second one he used in his fight against Reg.[3] Bondrewd knew about the plan of Riko's group to lure him into a Stingerhead nest, and willingly sacrificed his Umbra Hands while setting them to "Auto mode", and lost the battle; both out of curiosity and to "complete" Prushka.[3] Bondrewd's multilayered eyes, as well as the tentacles that grew from it, are both separate Artifacts.[4] Bondrewd uses an Artifact to hijack Nanachi's vision, however it is not Zoaholic.[3] Bondrewd created Type 4 Energy Rations.[3] Bondrewd doesn't care about the taste of what he eats but if asked how something tastes, he'll answer truthfully.[4] Bondrewd genuinely loves children.[3] It is revealed by Belaf that Bondrewd has actually visited The Village of Iruburu on multiple occasions and was quite familiar with the inhabitants, meaning him, Reg and Nanachi are the only known beings to return from the 6th layer with their form and consciousness (questionable or otherwise) intact.[45] It was confirmed to be likely that Bondrewd would collect children to experiment on them even after the events with Riko's group.[46] The Hammerbeak (ใƒ„ใƒใƒใ‚ท, Tsuchibashi) is an avian species whose habitat extends from the surface, down to the 4th Layer of The Abyss.[1] They are very numerous, as they are often seen in the most shallow areas of the Abyss and can be observed with a simple telescope from the houses on Orth.[2] They appear to be quite fond of shiny things and, as such, will take them to their nest just for the amusement of it.[3] Their most iconic trait is their hard beak that is fused with their skull. They use it when engaging in hostile situations with other creatures and they move in large groups relentlessly assaulting their victims.[1] If one of their own is attacked, the whole flock will retaliate.[4] They will also take advantage of weakened opponents that have suffered severe wounds even if the opponent is a far more powerful creature, like a Crimson Splitjaw.[5] Despite the tight relationship with each other, male Hammerbeaks are sometimes in dispute with each other and resolve it by bashing their heads against each other until one breaks. The headbutting of two Hammerbeaks often produces sparks, showcasing the sturdiness of their beaks.[1] Because they are usually not very big and their beak is all they have going for them as a mechanism for defense, they are not quite so fearsome and represent a minor danger to Delvers; even in groups. Their meat is delicious and is a very convenient source of food for Delvers. Their beak can also serve as a flint, cookware or a container, so catching one will provide a meal and the tools necessary to prepare it. Their feathers also work well as high quality live coals.[1] Trivia On the 4th Layer, they primarily nest on the plant beams that hold up the Flat-creeper.[6] Their eggs are a key ingredient for Nanachi's Netherworld Stew, the freshly laid eggs being best.[6] The wingspan of an adult Hammerbeak can exceed three meters.[1] The beak fused with the skull is less strongly developed for the females of the species.[7] Their subspecies, the Giant Hammerbeak, has a more developed skull than the regular species and also as patterns on it's head.[8] The Hamashirama (ใƒใƒžใ‚ทใƒฉใƒž, Hamashirama) is a strange fish that lives in large numbers in the 5th Layer of The Abyss, the Sea of Corpses.[1] Hamashirama are bizarre-looking, aquatic swimming creatures. They are widespread in the floating sea of the 5th Layer. They are said to eat detritus of aquatic creatures. Their appearance outside of the water is vastly different to the form they take when swimming, which somewhat resembles an air balloon. Much like all the aquatic creatures of the 5th Layer, they are said to be unaffected by the curse and possess many different sensory organs than surface organisms.[1] Their anatomy is quite strange. All their internal organs are packed into their head, and they spray a mucous produced by their organs through spitting from their mouth. This mucous has paralyzing properties and is used to stop the movement of predators. In some reports, they have been seen using other paralyzed creatures as living shields. Outside of the water they die very quickly and don't possess any form of notable offensive capabilities, thus making fishing for them harmless. Trying to catch one in water is more difficult, and the act of diving into the sea of the 5th Layer is synonymous with suicide due to the sensory deprivation of the curse.[1] Hamashirama are edible and quite delicious. While their appearance is rather displeasing, they are described to be sweet and tasty. The best form of consumption of them is considered to be raw, much like how sushi is typically eaten. Their skin is very tough, so it can be used as a plate. The oily organs should be removed however, since they are poisonous.[2] The Neritantan (ใƒใƒชใ‚ฟใƒณใ‚ฟใƒณ, Neritantan) is a species that inhabits the vast cave system within the walls of the 3rd Layer of The Abyss and live in the roots of the plants that grow haphazardly within it.[1][2] Their flat bodies are shaped by their flexible ribs which can deform and elongate as needed by inhaling air.[2] They have four protrusions on their backs, but nobody knows what they're for. Their long fur is often used as a blanket.[3] Their primary diet consists of Baracocha fruits. Presumably because of this, their meat is described as very delicious, which makes them suitable for a wide range of dishes. To protect themselves from predators, they bunch up together in their nests and inflate their bodies, forming a near unimpregnable wall.[2][4] They have a symbiotic relationship with the plants they live in: they eat the plants' fruits and spread the seeds in their feces.[2] Trivia Neritantan overpopulate the 3rd Layer, because of mass breeding. There are other subspecies of Neritantan in the other layers.[5] The interiors of the hollow plant roots where the Neritantan live commonly contain leaves, flowers, and even fruits.[2] The Silkfang (ใ‚ดใ‚ณใ‚ฆใ‚ฒ, Gokลge) is a large insect that is occasionally seen within the 1st Layer of The Abyss.[1] It has a 10-meter dome-shaped territory, and puts its sticky feelers inside of it. They use it as a trap to catch their prey when they carelessly enter their territory.[2] They move extremely fast within their dome and can spit a paralyzing poison from their mouths and their snouts also have a venomous sting that causes paralysis as well. These traits make them quite dangerous when one accidentally steps within their territory, but their danger level decreases outside of it.[2][3] However, they won't ever leave their dome and sleep at the top until potential prey appears. If one is cautious, avoiding them is not a hard task.[2] They might be edible, but this hasn't been confirmed yet.[2] The Crimson Splitjaw (ใƒ™ใƒ‹ใ‚ฏใƒใƒŠใƒฏ, Benikuchinawa) is a giant, elongated, legless, carnivorous, scarlet red reptile of the serpent species that primarily lives in the steep cliffs of the 3rd Layer of The Abyss. By spreading its hood it is able to swiftly surf the air currents. Sometimes they might fly up to the upper layers in search of food, but it is exceedingly rare to see them in the most shallow sections of the Abyss. They have vestigial eyes and many wart-like appendages on their lower jaws.[1] The three black dots that Crimson Splitjaws have around the mouth are organs that can detect The Force Field.[2][3] Whether it is to harvest the nutrients, or to temper the gizzard is unknown, but they are known to habitually swallow Artifacts and minerals. There is no doubt that the sac of any of them bears treasure in great quantities, though the possibility of it being defecated cannot be crossed out either.[1] Crimson Splitjaws are ferocious predators that attack any Delver on sight, so their danger level is high, standing as some of the most dangerous creatures in the 3rd Layer.[4] Their meat is edible, but it's not very tasty to the point where it has also been noted to taste terrible.[1][3] The Ottobas (ใ‚ชใƒƒใƒˆใƒใ‚น, Ottobasu) are large amphibious animals that live deep within the bottom of the 2nd Layer of The Abyss, in the area around the borders of the Inverted Forest.[1] In their homeland, they were known as "the king of jungle rivers".[2] These animals are foreign apex predators of lakes within forests and, unexpectedly, were capable of adapting to the habitat of the Abyss. However, they were unable to compete with other predators of the 2nd Layer and were periodically driven to the innermost region of the Inverted Forest where The Force Field is thin.[1] While they were driven back, the evolutionary period they have spent for generations within the Abyss made them much larger than they originally were. Ottobas are capable of swallowing humans whole, so approaching one too closely is quite dangerous. They are omnivorous, so they don't necessarily rely on hunting only.[1] Ottobas have a thick layer of fat and skin, thus they are usually not fit for consumption. However, with proper care and preparation, one would be enough to feed about 200 people.[1] Corpse-Weepers (ใƒŠใ‚ญใ‚ซใƒใƒ, Nakikabane) are large birds that live in the ruthless 2nd Layer of The Abyss, in the Forest of Temptation.[1] Corpse-Weepers are carnivorous and quite violent at that. They are notorious for their capabilities to mimic sounds and use it for hunting. If they capture prey with high social capabilities such as Hammerbeaks or humans, they will learn their prey's cries for help and use it to lure others to their colony, thus giving them the name, Crying Corpses. Despite that, they are quite affectionate creatures.[1] They live in colonies and raise their chicks together. At a young age, and before they learn to fly, the elders will carry living prey to take them to the nest to feed the chicks. As one would expect from their size, Corpse-Weepers are quite strong, being able to swiftly carry a human around.[1] During breeding season, they will purposely drive their prey to their colony and hunt them together. Delving into their colony is extremely dangerous, even for an adept Delver. Despite their scary looks and intimidating behavior, they are quite affectionate and chicks can be raised to be familiar with humans. Also, while their meat smells bad when cooked, it is incredibly tasty.[1] The differing sizes of their left and right eyes give them superb spatial awareness, and they can respond quickly to threats coming from the skies above them. While they consume meat, they don't have a beak like most birds, so they rip and slurp out meat and organs using their well-developed tongues. Males have longer quills, so they can be recognized easily. Some specimens grow to have wingspans exceeding ten meters.[1] Corpse-weepers live in large colonies where they nurture the young together, as a whole. They are easily capable of lifting up adult humans.[2] Trivia Corpse-Weepers can be tamed if they are raised by people from the time they are chicks.[1] The Silkfang (ใ‚ดใ‚ณใ‚ฆใ‚ฒ, Gokลge) is a large insect that is occasionally seen within the 1st Layer of The Abyss.[1] It has a 10-meter dome-shaped territory, and puts its sticky feelers inside of it. If one is cautious, avoiding them is not a hard task.[2] They might be edible, but this hasn't been confirmed yet.[2]
