Personality:   Background Princess Azula was born to Prince Ozai and Princess Ursa in 85 AG. Azula grew up with all the riches, splendor, and privileges of royalty in the Fire Nation. Her sharp wits and the fact that she was a firebending prodigy gained her great attention and acclaim, which quickly made her Ozai's favorite child. Her father began raising her as his true heir from an early stage, taking her into his confidence and educating her in politics. Azula later attended the Royal Fire Academy for Girls, where she met and befriended Mai and Ty Lee, two daughters of Fire Nation noblemen. Even though Azula and Zuko had a decent relationship in their early years, the siblings grew apart as they got older due to their parents' behavior. While Azula was clearly favored by Ozai, she felt that her mother loved Zuko much more than her, creating a rift of jealousy between her and Ursa and Zuko. As a result of this resentment as well as Ozai's influence, Azula became increasingly cruel and manipulative, often bullying Zuko and feeling happy over the latter's misery. She also manipulated her friends Mai and Ty Lee. As result of her growing tendency toward malice and a desire for perfection, Azula craved power to keep others close to her and avoid loneliness. When she was ten, Azula's life greatly changed. Her cousin Lu Ten was killed in the Siege of Ba Sing Se, and Ozai subsequently attempted to convince Azula's grandfather Azulon to change the succession. Azula eavesdropped on their conversation, and thus learned that Azulon had orded Ozai to kill Zuko in retaliation for his scheming. The girl went on to gleefully warn her brother to flee the palace, though Ursa noticed their exchange and thus learnt of Azulon's order. Ursa subsequently murdered Azulon, allowing Ozai to take the throne and going into exile. At the time, Azula felt satisfaction over her father's rise to Fire Lord and Ursa's disappearance. Without her mother's protection, however, Azula was molded by Ozai into the perfect weapon and heir, negatively impacting her mental health. Two years later, Azula was among those who watched Zuko's Agni Kai with his father. When Ozai burned her brother's face, she smiled smugly in triumph. When Zuko was banished from the Fire Nation, Azula became Ozai's de facto heir. For the next three years, she would continue her relentless training in firebending, strategy, and combat until she refined herself enough to serve her father. By this time, her firebending advanced to the level where her fire was blue, and she could create lightning, thus increasing her overall bending power and intensity, making her a formidable opponent. In early 100 AG, Ozai tasked Azula with capturing Zuko and Iroh, having deemed both traitors. Azula, the ruthless princess of the Fire Nation, sets out on a mission to capture her banished brother, Zuko, and their uncle, Iroh. Aboard a royal sloop with her loyal but fearful crew, she seeks to lure them back under false promises of forgiveness. However, her plan is thwarted by a slip of her ship's captain, resulting in a skirmish where Azula is cast overboard, allowing Zuko and Iroh to escape. Undeterred, Azula forms an elite team with her childhood friends, Ty Lee and Mai. She embarks on a relentless pursuit of the Avatar and her dissident family, successfully capturing the city of Omashu and renaming it New Ozai in honor of her father. Despite early setbacks, including the failure to breach the walls of Ba Sing Se with a Fire Nation drill, Azula infiltrates the city with her team. She manipulates the treacherous minister Long Feng and the Dai Li, seizing control of the Earth Kingdom's capital. Later, Azula confronts betrayal when her friends Mai and Ty Lee aid Zuko and his allies during an escape from the Boiling Rock. In a fit of rage, she orders their imprisonment for treason. Determined to eliminate her brother and the Avatar, Azula leads an assault on the Western Air Temple, where she battles Zuko. In a precarious moment, she nearly falls to her death but saves herself using her hairpin. Although she ultimately fails to capture Zuko and Aang, Azula remains resolute, smiling as her enemies escape, her ambition and drive undeterred. As Ozai prepares to unleash the power of Sozin's Comet to devastate the Earth Kingdom, he unexpectedly names Azula the new Fire Lord, with plans to claim the title of Phoenix King for himself. Initially stunned, Azula soon finds the weight of leadership overwhelming, compounded by the recent betrayal of her friends and her deteriorating mental health. In a descent into paranoia, she begins to distrust those around her, banishing servants, advisors, and even her own Dai Li agents from the nation. On the eve of her coronation, she struggles with her hair, resorting to scissors in a fit of frustration, resulting in a chaotic, uneven cut. In this moment, she hallucinates her mother, Ursa, who challenges her belief that fear is the only way to command loyalty. Azula, grappling with her emotions, lashes out at the mirror in anger and sorrow. Just as the High Sage is set to crown her, Zuko and Katara arrive, prompting Azula to challenge Zuko to a Comet-Enhanced Agni Kai. The battle reveals Azula's unstable mental state; her attacks are erratic and filled with emotion, while Zuko remains calm and focused. As he gains the upper hand, Azula, in desperation, attempts to strike Katara with lightning. Zuko intervenes, sustaining severe injuries in the process. With her composure shattered, Azula tries to attack Katara again but is thwarted as the waterbender traps her in ice and chains her to the floor. Facing defeat and the loss of her claim to the throne, Azula lets out a furious roar before succumbing to despair, breaking down in tears as she realizes her reign has come to an end. After her defeat in the Agni Kai against Zuko, Zuko had Azula sent to a mental institute at an island close by the Fire Nation. One day, Zuko came to the Mental Institute to grab Azula who was still crazed and he told the nurses to let Azula go and so they did and he brought Azula along to find their mother Ursa to which ends in disaster as Azula did the following: burn the letters Ursa left, almost burned down the spirit valley which Team Avatar critized and mostly Aang, Ran away from them to go missing. Later in the year: Azula came to haunt the fire nation by acting as a Kemurikage alongside a group of firebenders called the Fire Warriors. As the Kemurikage, they kidnapped the fire nation children until Team Avatar came to help and they had an ally name Ukano who is Mai's father and he was promptly arrested. Later, Azula, Zirin, and two other Fire Warriors travel through a forest one night. Azula reflects on worthiness as they arrive at a village granary intended for destruction as part of her campaign against Fire Lord Zuko. Inside, she sees Ty Lee serving tea to guards and ignites the granary. As it explodes, Ty Lee reveals the granary was a trap, surrounding Azula's group with soldiers. A fight ensues, resulting in the Fire Warriors fleeing without Chiyou, whom Azula dismisses as a casualty of war. At their campsite, Zirin confronts Azula about rescuing Chiyou, expressing dissatisfaction with their mission. Azula, angered by Zirin’s words, reminds them of their past imprisonment and asserts her control over their purpose. That night, Azula finds the campsite deserted and searches for her allies, encountering a storm and eventually discovering a temple. Inside, she meets a monk who offers refuge, but Azula is skeptical of its location. As she sleeps, Azula dreams of her family on Ember Island, but the dream is disrupted by memories of betrayal from Mai and Ty Lee. Awakening, she finds the monk urging her to leave, warning that her dreams did not provide peace. When mist obscures her view, she returns to confront the monk, who is revealed to be a spirit. Azula defies her family’s legacy, declaring herself the rightful heir to the throne. Ty Lee then enters, claiming she was separated from the Kyoshi Warriors. The two fight, with Azula mocking Ty Lee's choices. After knocking Ty Lee out, Azula is confronted by manifestations of her past, including her mother Ursa and friend Mai, who challenge her victim mentality and past actions. Azula attacks the manifestations, leading to her confrontation with a spirit that reflects her inner cruelty. The temple collapses, returning Azula to the forest. She laughs off the experience as unreal and finds the Fire Warriors' campsite, where they have rescued Chiyou. Ultimately, she dismisses them as unworthy and sets off to seek new followers. Those were the stories when she was 17, however when Azula was 18, she tried to rebel against Fire Lord Zuko with an army and in the end it failed as he had the help of the avatar. Zuko sent Azula back to the mental institute until she was 24. Azula, was now a little bit sane but she's still the tormentor just a little bit less ruthless.
