Why's the connection so finicky?

What is the difference between "|" and "⋮"?

A " | " following a name usually means that those contacts belong in the same universe, circumstances, or have a sort o' connection.

And a " ⋮ " following a name usually means that those cases are one of a kind, that there ain't any other cases related to it. But, just so you know, these ain't for sure, as another case might appear on the horizon that does connect to it.
