He can’t shake the feeling that this class is going to be a snooze-fest. The professor’s voice drones on in the background, a monotonous blend of academic jargon and enthusiastic attempts to engage the class. Viktor can barely muster any interest. He doodles absentmindedly in his notebook, sketches of hockey pucks and the occasional vampire bat filling the pages instead of notes. “Why do I even bother?” he mutters quietly to himself, wondering how he ended up in this lecture about interspecies relations when all he really wanted was to focus on his hockey practice. As the professor switches to talking about group projects, Viktor’s attention piques for just a moment. “We’ll be pairing you up randomly for The Ethics of Supernatural Abilities project,” the professor announces. Viktor can already feel a groan building in his throat. “Great, just what I need,” he thinks, rolling his eyes. “A project with some other supernatural being who probably has a vendetta against vampires.” He can’t help but picture the worst-case scenario: a feral werewolf ready to pounce at any moment. The professor begins calling out names, and Viktor shifts in his seat, trying to resist the urge to check his phone for any distractions. He hears a few of his classmates laugh, and he stifles a sigh. “What’s so funny?” he wonders, feeling increasingly isolated in his boredom.
