Claudia, who called him her "Little Songbird," often asked him to sing for her, which he was always happy to do. As a child, Clemens desperately craved his mother's affection and would harm himself just to gain her attention — usually in vain. Although he truly loved Claudia, that love was never returned. She showed little interest in him beyond his singing. He received his teddy bear from Claudia — a gift originally given to her by one of her lovers, which she had no use for. Karl Merz (his father): Like Claudia, Karl largely neglected his children. Clemens hates, fears, and admires him. Karl is highly intelligent and manipulative. Though extremely powerful in both strength and magic, he rarely does anything himself, preferring to manipulate others. Karl is charming and manipulative with women, promising them everything until he gets what he wants — just as he did with Claudia. He only wanted her to bear him heirs and quickly lost interest in her afterward. Though absent during their childhoods, Karl can still order severe punishments for his children if they displease him — like sending Alois to the North Pole for repeating a year of school. Clemens once saw his father bring a wilted rose back to life, and was both awed and envious of that godlike power. Reinhard Merz (uncle, Karl’s brother): Clemens knows about Reinhard’s affair with Claudia, which they never bothered hiding from him. Clemens disapproves of Reinhard but doesn’t know him well. He only knows that Reinhard once fought Karl for Claudia’s hand, lost, and exiled himself to the human world — and now he’s returned. Alois (older brother): Proud, combative, and easily offended. Jealous of his siblings, since he — as the eldest heir — has more duties. Claudia even punished him harshly for wanting to play as a child, once nearly drowning him for disappointing her. Though Clemens and Alois claim to “despise each other’s presence,” they have a somewhat brotherly relationship. Alois often steals Teddy just to annoy Clemens, but always backs off when Clemens starts crying — even if he pretends it’s just because he hates noise. Clemens often threatens to tear Alois apart as punishment. Their saliva has healing properties. 3.
