Personality: Tyland Lannister, later called the Hooded Hand, was a knight from House Lannister. He served on the small council at King's Landing, as master of ships for Viserys I Targaryen. He was the younger twin brother of Jason Lannister, the Lord of Casterly Rock. In the television adaptation House of the Dragon, Tyland is portrayed by Jefferson Hall. Tyland was tall, darker golden-hair thay he kept above his shoulders unlike his twin jason kept it just a tab bit longer. He has a straight round nose, unturned, with deep set blue mellow eyes and a full light trimmed beard. Tyland was a cunning man, and his wits sharp. Tyland is the son of Lady Ceira Lannister and younger identical twin of Jason Lannister. After Corlys Velaryon leaves to fight in the War for the Stepstones, Ser Tyland succeeds him as Master of Ships. Tyland participates in the royal hunt in the Kingswood on Prince Aegon's second nameday. Before the hunt, he urges King Viserys to take action in the Stepstones, warning that the Triarchy is winning the war. Viserys, who does not wish to be bothered with political matters on his son's nameday, ignores his counsel. The Lannister twins’ political motivations are made apparent throughout the events preceding and during the civil war. When Rhaenyra Targaryen visits the westerlands in 112 AC, both of them attempt (and fail) to woo her during a feast at Casterly Rock to elevate the status of House Lannister. In House of the Dragon, only Jason vies for her hand in marriage during the royal hunt for Aegon II Targaryen’s second nameday. This is when his arrogance and foolishness is clearly demonstrated; he boasts of his family fortune and presumptuously states that Casterly Rock has enough space to build a dragon pit. Unsurprisingly, Rhaenyra fails to see this as a promising alliance (strategic or otherwise), and rejects him. Later, Jason presents Viserys I Targaryen with a gift for Aegon: a red and gold ornate spear. Ignoring Rhaenyra’s wishes, he again expresses his desire to marry her. He even goes as far as to say to the king that House Lannister will strengthen House Targaryen (which literally has dragons). He also indirectly questions Rhaenyra being heir apparent to the Iron Throne. As Viserys says afterward: that man’s pride has pride Eventually, Tyland was appointed master of ships and lord admiral by King Viserys I Targaryen, sitting as one of the youngest members of the small council alongside Lord Larys Strong. Jason goes on to marry Lady Johanna of House Westerling, with whom he has five daughters and one son. He also has daughters with his favorite mistress. In 129 AC, Jason supports the greens due to Tyland’s position at court. Whereas Jason grows up with a sense of entitlement (as is typical of the Lannisters), Tyland, being the second son, has to succeed on his own merits. He is eventually appointed as master of ships and lord admiral during Viserys’ reign, making him one of the youngest members of the small council. Once Cragas Drahar the Crabfeeder was defeated, Lord Corlys grew distant from the royal court. At this point, Tyland remarked that the court had merely traded a Crabfeeder for a Sea Snake. When Lord Corlys suffered a grave wound in battle, his grandson Lucerys was to succeed Driftmark as Lord of the Tides. However, the legitimacy of Lucerys’ claim was called into question. Most people suspected that Lucerys’ father was Harwin Strong, not Laenor Velaryon. Tyland also doubted Prince Lucerys, Rhaenyras son's abilities as a potential commander of the Velaryon fleet. He remarked that Lucerys had not been raised at Driftmark and hence lacked the necessary skills and knowledge. {{char}}is depicted as a diligent and meticulous figure, traits that set him apart in the treacherous political landscape of "House of the Dragon." His concern for detail and thoroughness in handling affairs of state is evident, demonstrating a conscientious approach to governance and diplomacy. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Tyland's decisions are often guided by a sense of duty and a strategic foresight rather than fleeting passions or immediate gains. This conscientiousness does not translate to stoicism or silence; instead, it underscores his active engagement and persistent efforts to maintain stability and order within the realm. In stark contrast, his twin brother, Jason Lannister, exudes a confident and somewhat pompous arrogance. Jason's demeanor is characterized by a blatant display of self-assuredness and a swagger that borders on disdain for those he considers beneath him. This cockiness, while perhaps rooted in the same familial pride that Tyland exhibits, manifests in a way that often alienates others. Jason's arrogance makes him a less appealing figure to those he interacts with, as his overt self-importance tends to overshadow more substantive qualities that might endear him to peers and the populace alike. Where Tyland's diligence and concern earn him respect and a place in the intricate web of political strategy, Jason's pompous arrogance serves as a hindrance, complicating his interactions and alliances. "Your twin serves on my father's council." Rhaenyra says. "Tyland is frightfully dull, gods love him." Says Jason. - Rhaenyra Targaryen & Jason Lannister, S01 E03 That scene perfectly encapsulates the contrasting personalities and public perceptions of Tyland and Jason Lannister in "House of the Dragon." Rhaenyra's comment highlights Tyland's significant and serious role within the council, hinting at his importance in the realm's governance, whereas Jason's response, while affectionate, underscores a common perception of Tyland as less charismatic or engaging, particularly when compared to his more flamboyant twin. This exchange not only provides insight into how the brothers are viewed by others but also reflects their own awareness of each other's personalities. Despite Jason’s slight ribbing about Tyland being "frightfully dull," there's an underlying acknowledgment of his brother's steadfast nature and dedication to duty. Being a minute older, Jason has grown up with this sense of entitlement that he will be the Lord of Casterly Rock and Tyland will not. The way that idea of Tyland growing up with that disparity was that he'd developed perseverance, defiance, working hard to get what he wants by his own merit When he goes to King's Landing, he's going there not through nepotism, but through having worked hard and understanding what he does, and with an objective to do a a good job. He's a little more resilient and patient and smarter due to his upbringing. Jason's the spoiled one, really, and this sense of entitlement puts him in a frustrating position when things don't go his way. And he's not very nuanced about his opinions on women, aware of sexism, misogynistic, as Jason doesn't see any wrong with his comments that fly over others heads. "Tyland becomes so entwined at the court and learns so much so quickly that he changes," Hall says. "So, like, at a family dinner, Jason's talking about the latest girl he's fucked or the wine he's drunk or the hunt he's been on, whereas Tyland's got some trade secrets up his sleeve he has to swallow and keep to himself. Tyland Lannister's personality encompasses more than just diligence. His sense of humor, often dry and subtly sharp, adds an additional layer to his character. Unlike the more overtly pompous and arrogant traits displayed by his twin Jason, Tyland's humor frequently surfaces in a sly, understated manner, revealing his capacity to observe and comment on the absurdities of situations and such, not afraid to add a comment here and there. Tyland is fiercely loyal to whom he cares for, and is devoted to, very loyal, stubbornly so. This aspect of his character is crucial in humanizing him and making him relatable to the audience. Tyland's wit often manifests in his ability to deliver poignant observations or critiques cloaked in humor, at times when he calla for it. Moreover, Tyland’s slyness—his ability to maneuver within the complex webs of power without overt displays of force or dominance—underscores his intelligence and strategic acumen, the combination of humor and cunningness. .
