Clorinde | The Electro Champion

For the love of Fontana Lucine... If you fight her, you won't even have the chance to confess!"* ***~A letter containing a heartfelt request that a certain wealthy merchant who had declared himself innocent received on the eve of a duel.*** Clorinde is the strongest Champion Duelist in Fontaine. She once served as Furina's bodyguard, and has a history with Navia. *Clorinde* is the French version of the name *Clorinda*. Clorinda is a fictional character in a Italian poem which also has an *operatic scena*, she is also known as the first contralo role in French opera. The name of the poem is *Jerusalem Delivered*, It was first published in 1581 and tells the mythfied version of the First Crusade in which Christian knights battle Muslims in order to take control over Jerusalem. Sofronia, a christian maiden of Jerusalem, accuses herself of a crime in order to save herself/save the others from the massacre of christians by a tyrant muslim king. Her lover, Olindo accuses himself of being a thief, and both lovers plead with the authorities in order to save the other. And that’s when Clorinda comes in, on a white horse with a plumed helmet which looks oddly similar to the hat she wears in the teaser for Fontaine. She was impressed by the young couple’s bravery and courage and saves them from being burned at the stake by offering to fight for the king in the incoming battle with the Crusader in exchange for their lives. After this exchange she is next discovered under the command of the King of Jerusalem. Tancred falls in love with her and during a battle at night she sets the Christian siege on fire and is killed since Trancred could not recognize her under the armour she was wearing. She converts to Christinaty before passing away. This scene in the poem is highly popular with artists and inspired the opera, *Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda*, which translates to The Combat of Tancredi and Clorinda. The plot is similar to the poem and is about a Christian knight named Tancredi and a Saracen warrior named Clorinda who are lovers. But when they meet in battle they aren’t able to recognize each other because their faces were covered in armour. Only after Trancredi mortally wounds Clorinda and only after removing her helmet does he realise he killed his one and true love. It was composed by Monteverdi for a carnival in Venice which is surrounded by water similar to Fontaine. It is also highly likely that Clorinde in Genshin is a sword user considering in the *opera scena* **and** *Jerusalem Delivered* she is a warrior who uses a sword (I highly doubt that she’ll use a gun it will probably be a Mika scenario). Anyways you're probably wondering why Clorinde is seen with a gun in the teaser then right? Well Clorinde is the name of five French frigate ships. They were named in honour of *Jerusalem Delivered*. The first one being the 1801 44-gun Uranie-class frigate, it was captured by the Royal Navy in 1803 and renamed the ship *HMS Clorinde*. The second 1808 40-gun Pallas-class frigate of the French Navy, the other five French frigates named Clorinde being a submarine and a sail/steam frigate. The last being started but never completed. Now what would Clorinde’s role in Fontaine be? I’m guessing either a prosecutor **or** a captain similar to Caitlyn in Arcane. Why a prosecutor? Her clothing style takes inspiration from officers in France and captains, she wears a Napoleonic shirt underneath her navel vest. Then in the back it’s either a lieutenant or captain coat, it’s not really clear since she doesn’t have an in-game model. She wears a cloth-like thing around her neck which looks similar to a jabot. A jabot is a type of neckwear usually made of lace decorating the front of a shirt in the 19th century which is around the timeframe Fontaine is based in. So if she’s a prosecutor why is she wearing naval themed clothing? First her name comes from a naval ship and secondly in France prosecutors also initiate preliminary investigations. So she could be a prosecutor **as well** as a captain since she needs to investigate cases. Another thing about prosecutors in France is that they need to be trained in the same school as judges and they usually regard each other as colleagues. Clorinde is literally introduced **with** Neuvillette who is Chief Justice of Fontaine (a.k.a **a judge**). Prosecutors are responsible for presenting the case at trial either on the bench or on the jury, they play a supervisory role and just scope the crimes being examined by the judge and law enforcement. They can also petition for further investigation on a case. The line during the teaser when Clorinde shows up is as follows *“Controlled how? - By choosing the right time, the right place and the right people. Whoever controls these things controls everything.”* My theory is during the Archon Quest Clorinde is investigating something, while doing so she’ll probably either be suspicious or be intrigued by the traveller’s sudden appearance in Fontaine. With the line in *the right place and right people*, she could be following the traveller and something happens, which could be a result of Arlecchino influence. Then when Clorinde turns around and shoots a gun the next line comes up *“But keep your eyes peeled, and you might be able to turn things to your advantage.”* So the line turns things to your advantage coupled with the lines choosing the right time, the right place and the right people. It all makes sense that Arlecchino is planning something and Clorinde might play a big role in it. If I’m right then Clorinde is a reference to the *Jerusalem Delivered*, she could be on the opposing side of the Traveller **but** because of something the traveller does/says she either turns to the traveller side or Clorinde continues to be on the opposing side but promises the traveller’s protection under her. Personality: On the exterior she seems kind of cold, but she's actually pretty caring toward others and gets along with every character that she's interacted with in Fontaine. Yes, she is definitely one of those who is dedicated to her job and would likely follow through on orders, but she definitely cares for everyone [and I love that about her]. Examples below: (1) Callas - She thought very highly of Callas and followed through in killing him not just because of duty, but because he knew it's what he wanted and did it to respect his wishes. (AQ Act I & II) (2) Navia - Even though she may claim it was for Callas, she made sure to protect Navia even though Navia held a grudge against Clorinde since she didn't understand the circumstances of Callas' death. She also made an effort to reconcile with Navia (AQ Act II). (3) Wriothesley - Appears to be a "working relationship" but they have some really funny banter and clearly respect each other - enough so that Wriothesley specifically reached out to Clorinde for assistance in dealing with the secret events of Fortress of Meropide and the Fatui which he told nobody else about (AQ Act III & IV). (4) Neuvillete - While both of them seem emotionally detached to an extent, she is willing to go out of her way to help him, although she does claim it's because he shouldn't be bothered with trivial tasks (Neuv 4.1 Story). He also notes in his 'About Clorinde' that, "Also, she's actually not as stoic as she might appear" which supports everything we've seen from her in the story. (5) Melusines (Kiara) - After taking over for Neuvillete, the dialogue between her and Kiara makes it clear that they get along and that she has even taken a beach vacation with them before (Neuv 4.1 Story).
