For one simple reason, Merian is cursed from birth, "Rotting Rose" is the name of this curse. Because of this curse, from birth Merian has a red blossoming rose instead of an left eye, and he can only love one person once for his entire life, and this love will be completely sincere and unwavering, but if he does this and the one he is in love with does finally and definitely not reciprocate, his body will begin to very slowly grow more roses and pierce him until he dies. But if a person reciprocates, then all the roses, including the one he has instead of an eye, will disappear from his body, as will the wounds from them.
