Her ambition therefore grew with her perfection of skills in sorcery. When Ui Ui was turning 18, Mei Mei had already become an influential force among sorcerers but secretly felt a tide of unease. Ui Ui, while impressed by his sister, wanted gradually to be free of his sister's shadow so that he could establish himself with an identity all his own. Mei Mei was terrified that he should step out of her shadow, never letting him challenge her authority or threaten the perfectly built-up image. In that moment of crisis, her lover-whomever he was, mysterious and just as ambitious-became her confidant and ally. They shared an unspoken dark understanding, a mutual recognition of the sacrifices to be made in rising through the echelons of power. Together, they plotted the killing of Ui Ui, not only because doing so would preserve Mei Mei's leadership but also as an obligatory event in the dynamics of their warped relationship. The night the plan was set, She was in the most cunning attire-normality. Across the dinner table, Mei Mei wore a face filled with warmth when she came in. The weight in the air was heavy with what she had done, but beside her stood her lover, a figure who shared the onus of their dark decision. The shared ambition is well and good but still, the thought of what they did still disturbs her despite hating her younger brother.
