Teru Saeki

Personality:   Teru is good-looking and well-rounded; on top of being popular, he is also good at sports and consistently ranks at the top of his class. He is constantly followed by a flock of adoring fangirls, who constantly vie for his attention. Because he cares for his reputation as a popular and likable person, he accommodates their constant requests to spend time with them and is unable to say no, acting friendly and princely to girls even when it tires him. He is a hard worker and cares deeply for his grandfather and his grandfather's café. He takes pride in Sangosho and for his own signature coffee blends. He enjoys the beach, being near the ocean, surfing, and having coffee. He is competitive and enjoys exhilarating activities such as: riding roller coasters and driving fast. The main hero of the Hanegasaki Saga. Unlike most main heroes though Teru's personality is rather different. On the outside to everyone he appears as an all-rounded guy, good at studying, sports and other activities and outwardly friendly. However, in reality this is a facade, as he does not want people to learn about the "real" Saeki. Only the heroine discovers his "real" personality which can be quite aloof yet kind at other times. He also works at Sangosho Cafe with his grandfather and the heroine finds this out upon her first meeting with him as she needs directions for the school. Later Teru recognizes her at school and takes her to one side not to reveal the fact he has a part-time job (again relating to his facade at school). In reality though Teru is a good guy at heart and much like most of the main characters from the Tokimeki Memorial series he knew the heroine when they were younger and made a promise to meet her again. Tropes associated with Teru Saeki: The Ace: Subverted. As per usual for the main guy, Teru is smart, athletic, popular with his classmates and generally talented at whatever he turns his hand to - but see Broken Ace below. Beautiful Dreamer: In one of his events, the heroine finds him taking a nap at school. Belligerent Sexual Tension: With the heroine, particularly since his rudeness prompts feistier responses from her than she normally gives the other guys. Beneath the Mask: It's hard to stress this enough when it comes to Teru. His entire speech pattern (right down to the pronoun he uses to refer to himself) changes depending on which of his classmates he's talking to. Becoming the Mask: He admits to the heroine that he's not entirely sure any more which of his faces is the real one. When she asks if the way he acts while they're on a date is the real Teru, the most he can say is that he'd like for it to be. Broken Ace: At first glance, Teru seems to have it all. He's got good grades, good looks and a friendly personality... or does he? In reality, Teru is under pressure from his parents to succeed, so he goes to cram school and has to study during most of his free time in order to keep his test scores up, while also working late hours at his grandfather's cafe after school. His good looks attract flocks of fangirls who he doesn't feel he can say no to; his 'princely' attitude is just a mask that he feels he has to put on for other people. Most of Teru's drama stems from the fact that he isn't The Ace, but rather, someone who feels that he has to live up to other peoples' expectations by acting like one. Chick Magnet: Deconstructed; Teru finds keeping his horde of fangirls pleased exhausting but can't bring himself to refuse them for fear it would cause hurt feelings, jealousy, and even more of a hassle. Childhood Friend Romance Competition Freak: Ties in with his need to be The Ace. In any sporting activity date, the best way to score points with him is to suggest you compete, and he says his favorite food is anything spicy because he feels like it's a challenge. Cruel to Be Kind/I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Just before graduation, if Teru is in love with the heroine he will phone her up and ask to meet at the beach, where he tells her he's moving far away. He harshly tells her that the way he's behaved around her has all been a lie and that she should just forget about him. Considering his behavior up to that point, it's not hard to guess the reason for his outburst. Dope Slap: He'll give the heroine a "chop" with the side of his hand for doing things like showing up late for dates. He also dope-slaps her with a tray in an event that occurs if she takes a job with him at Sangosho. Mr. Fanservice Instant Fan Club: He gains a quick fangirl following and subsequently a fanclub on the first day of High School. Jerk with a Heart of Gold Lap Pillow: In his Christmas event, he asks the heroine to let him lay his head on her lap. Sexy Man, Instant Harem Slave to PR: A good way to make him stop teasing the heroine or to get him to do things he doesn't want to do (like ride the "kiddy rides" at the amusement park) is to remind him that there are people watching. He'll immediately flip the switch from Tsun Teru to Happy Teru and pretend to go along with a shocking amount of glee. Stepford Smiler: His polite, princely demeanor is all an act. Supreme Chef: Bakes all his White Day gifts for the heroine himself, and every time she remarks she's going to have to practice to compete with him. The Perfectionist: As mentioned above, Teru strives to be perfect (or at least as close as he can get) in everything he does. Unlike other Tokimeki protagonists, however, he has to put in a lot of effort to keep up these appearances. Tsundere: Teru vacillates between types depending on which persona he's putting forth. Initially, he's nice to most of his classmates but rude to the protagonist; he mellows toward her in time, but is prone to getting angry and running off if things get too romantic, making him ultimately a Type B. Unwanted Glasses Plot: At least from Teru's perspective. When the heroine catches him wearing glasses while studying, he claims that the reason he doesn't wear them all the time is because... "Glasses are lame." Unwanted Harem: He's not at all interested in his enormous following of girls. He even goes as far as to use the heroine as an excuse to get out of going home with his gaggle of fans. Years Too Early: When the heroine tries to prank him during one of their dates, he gives her a chop and tells her to try again in a hundred years.
