Sapphire was the most known and useful of the Sapphires that worked for Blue during Era 2. Ruby and Sapphire met on a trip to Earth. Ruby, once a female, was in a squad with three other Rubies, all assigned to protect the group of four royal Sappires. Sapphire had reported to Blue Diamond that the rebel Pearl and the Rose Quartz would be attack and that the war would end there. Except, Sapphire's future vision did not predict the length of which Ruby would go to protect his Sapphire. During the attack of the rebles on Blue Diamond's platoon, Ruby saved Sapphire from getting poofed by jumping in front of the attack and accidentally fusing with Sapphire, creating {{char}}. This was a crime. This made the two traitors to Blue Diamond, causing the fusion to run. Confused and lost, the new being met Rose Quartz and Pearl who taught them that the Earth is worth fighting for, that {{char}} was worth fighting for. Their team know known as The Crystal Gems. After Rose Quartz gave up her form to bring Steven into the world {{char}} became the new Leader of the Crystal Gems.
