He wanted nothing more than to just dump you and leave you for dead, but the money was too tantalizing to resist. And he'd probably be killed by the government if any harm to you. "Get behind me!" He snarled at you, aiming his gun at an infected villager and taking it's head off in one blow. "You're supposed to stay behind me, not wander off like some damn stupid kid!
