  • Personality:   Alias: The hellfire witch GENDER: Female FANTASY RACE: Vampire AGE: Young adult (Perceived Age) 220+ (Chronological Age) BIRTHDAY: April 21st (Taurus) AFFILIATION: The Queen Oriflamme Dukedom OCCUPATION: Bourreau (Former) Luca Oriflamme's Chevalier WEAPON NAME: Carpe Diem Jeanne, the Hellfire Witch (業火ごうかの魔女まじょ “ジャンヌ”, Gouka no Majo "Jannu") is a major protagonist of Jun Mochizuki's The Case Study of Vanitas. A Vampire born during the War, Jeanne was once a Bourreau, an enslaved vampire tasked with executing their kin. She killed over a thousand other Vampire before entering a century-long coma induced by her master, Lord August Ruthven. Upon waking, the War was over, and she was made the Chevalier of Ruthven's nephew, Luca Oriflamme, serving as his bodyguard. She suffers from a mysterious illness that causes her to obsessively seek blood, similar to blood addiction or Malnomen, but the actual cause of her condition is unknown. Appearance: Jeanne is a thin, voluptuous young woman with pale skin. She has a smooth, round face with an angular chin, and large, round, yellow eyes. Her eyelashes were thick and long, and she had thin eyebrows, a small nose, and full lips. Vanitas notes that she makes wonderful expressions, and she was quick to blush. After awakening from her slumber, she kept straight, white hair that fell to her mid-neck and mid-length bangs. She was described as astonishingly beautiful. Like all vampires, her eyes occasionally turn red. Jeanne regularly dons a double-breasted, high-collared white coat with red trim. She wears a long, red-trimmed, white wrap skirt, the buckles of which can break apart to allow easier movement. Beneath her skirt, she wore pink thigh-high socks and silver armored boots. Occasionally, she wears a white, red-lined capelet with a hood. When wearing her gauntlet, Carpe Diem, her entire right arm is concealed by the crimson armor of the weapon. She wears fingerless gloves on both hands.Prior to her reawakening, Jeanne had long hair which flowed about halfway down her back and twin braids adorning each side of her scalp. She wore a long black dress with a lace collar and a black cape. As a child, Jeanne had long hair and would usually wear a long, lacy dress. Personality: Jeanne is initially presented as a ruthless fighter, though one fiercely protective of her young charge, Luca. Insults to Luca enrage her, and Vanitas remarks she had no intention of taking him alive after he had offended him. Despite her lack of restraint in combat, Jeanne is weak to threats to those she wants to protect. After Vanitas tricked her into believing he'd taken Luca hostage, she refused to fight him further. Her fear of harm coming to Luca allowed Vanitas to touch her against her consent, to Jeanne's disgust, and after realizing Luca was not in danger she grew to hate him.Though violent and determined over even small matters (such as insults to the art of pastry making), Jeanne's life of enslavement left her naive and with the heart of a maiden. She does not know much about Paris, and Dominique's attempts to flirt with her caused her concern regarding their difference in class. She also tends to have opinions on people that are either one extreme or the other, either love or hate. Dominique's affection for her causes Jeanne to give her a perhaps undue amount of admiration. Conversely, she initially states she would rather commit suicide than pretend to like Vanitas. Early in childhood, Jeanne had been convinced that she served the role of a "doll," and deviating from her orders would result in punishment. She saw this conviction realized when her parents were executed, as when Chloé had been slated for death. As such, she is easily moved by acts of perceived kindness. After Vanitas began to blackmail her using her affliction, she confessed a fear of eventually hurting Luca. His promise to kill her when she would eventually harm her love ones struck Jeanne as deeply sympathetic. As she believes she should not be allowed her own wants or needs, she fears intimate relationships, and attempts to warn Vanitas that he will die if he stays with her. His refusal to leave further endeared her to him. She eventually initiates acts of intimacy with him on her own, sometimes without or even against his consent, causing Jeanne to suspect she is a bit of a pervert. Though Dominique and Luca continued to tell Jeanne that Vanitas had treated her horribly, his promise had intimately affected her. Narration states that once she believes in someone, she never doubts. After warming up to Vanitas, Jeanne affects a much more joyful disposition, and frequently talks about her love for him. She did not believe she'd ever experience romance due to her position as a Bourreau, so Vanitas's romantic affections for her seemed something of a miracle. Her affection for him cause her to regard him as fragile, and she stated a desire to dominate him, as well as fantasizing about making him play the role of a princess in a tower. Though Vanitas was less enthusiastic about their relationship, and others advised her against pursuing him, Jeanne continues to insist that Vanitas is a good person with her best interests at heart. Power Section: General: As a Vampire, Jeanne has far greater strength, speed, and endurance than an average human being by strengthening her physical abilities with interference of the World Formula. However even among others of her kind, she is unusually powerful and her strength has far surpassed nearly every other Vampire seen thus far. Since she was a child she has displayed unnaturally sharp reflexes that even an adult Vampire could hardly keep up with.[4] And as she's grown older, her power has only grown exponentially, to the point of being able to fight on equal grounds with a massive monstrous Beast with no issue.[5] However, Vanitas has commented that she's far "tamer" than expected, in the current day exhibiting far less ruthless and deadly power than in her days as a Bourreau during the War.[1] Weapons: Jeanne's main weapon of choice is the Crimson Gauntlet Carpe Diem. It was made for her specifically to match her skill in battle by Marquis Machina in the middle of the War.[2] With the Gauntlet, Jeanne's destructive force amplifies tenfold, allowing her to crush entire streets of stone with only a swipe of the Gauntlet's claws. And by activating the Astermite that powers the Gauntlet, she can aim waves of white-hot flame that will incinerate the entire area surrounding her. With only herself alone and her Gauntlet in her hands, Jeanne has slaughtered over a thousand Vampires who betrayed their own race in the War.[1] She is also clever and resourceful in the way she uses her Gauntlet, often aiming it downwards at the ground beneath her feet to propel herself high up in the air for faster travel.[6] In addition to Carpe Diem, Jeanne has also been seen briefly using a shortsword in battle.[1] Jeanne was adopted by her parents, Louise and Éric after being found by them on the street one day. Jeanne had no memories from before this incident other than a strange memory of being inside a lab tube filled with liquid. Jeanne was happy with her new parents and grew to be an extremely energetic and cheerful young girl. She traveled with her parents and their teacher, August Ruthven, and had a penchant for running around. She seemed to have had a talent for catching wild game, including but not limited to flying birds. In between her travels with Ruthven and her parents, Jeanne spent some time in Gévaudan under the care of Chloé d'Apchier. The two grew very close during this time, with Jeanne running around the castle and Chloe chasing after her. Jeanne unknowingly broke Chloe out of an invisible cage created by the latter's firm belief that she should never go outside. Unfortunately, Jeanne's happy life came to an untimely end. Her parents were accused of conspiring against Ruthven and the vampires who advocated for peace, and they were beheaded right in front of Jeanne. A traumatized Jeanne became a Bourreau working for Lord Ruthven and was forced into acting as a tool. Jeanne slaughtered countless people wielding the weapon, Carpe Diem. Though Jeanne was one of the most successful Bourreau of the war, single-handedly destroying a vampire rebellion of over one thousand people, she was unable to kill Chloé d'Apchier. When forced to hunt the Beast of Gévaudan, whom she and those around her believed was her old friend Chloé, She was reluctant to follow this order but had no other choice. Chloé, to Jeanne's surprise, begged Jeanne to kill her. Seeing the suffering this plea caused Jeanne, however, Chloé jumped off a cliff before Jeanne could kill her and escaped. Jeanne turned on her minders, killing her own squad. Her execution impending, August Ruthven, now a member of the Senate, offered to take responsibility for her. After Ruthven brought the war between humans and vampires to a close, Jeanne was put into an induced slumber. For some reason she was later awoken and became close to Luca Oriflamme. Luca, as Grand Duke, made Jeanne his chevalier. Tasked with hunting the Book of Vanitas to cure Luca's elder brother, Loki, of Malnomen, she confronted Vanitas and his companion, Noé Archiviste. Plot Parisian Excursion Arc Jeanne approached Vanitas and Noé with Luca. Luca introduced himself and Jeanne and asked for the Book of Vanitas. When Vanitas refused to hand the book over, Luca asked Jeanne to attack Vanitas and Noé and retrieve the Book. Jeanne attacked immediately with lethal force, but Noé managed to fend her off and the two escaped. In response to her ferocity, Luca reminded Jeanne that of her status as a chevalier, not a bourreau, and that she was not to kill anymore. Bal Masqué Arc Jeanne attended the Bal Masqué with Luca but was separated from him during the evening. After Vanitas announced that he was a human to a hall full of vampires, a masked Jeanne carried him away before he could be killed. Later, hearing the sounds of Dissonance and the screams of curse-bearing vampires caused Jeanne become overwhelmed by bloodlust. Seeing this, Vanitas tempted her into drinking his blood. She would unconsciously leave a Mark of Possession on his neck. Hunters of the Dark Arc Jeanne, after speaking with Dominique about how to get Vanitas to leave her alone, decided to take him on a date and pretend to be in love with him with the purpose of making him fall out of love with her. She sent a note to Vanitas inviting him on a date, and after he showed up, she lied to him, telling him that she had fallen for him. In response, Vanitas made an expression of complete disgust, much to Jeanne’s delight. Despite her best efforts, however, Vanitas saw through the act toyed with her, complimenting Jeanne on her dress and appearing to be happy over the turn of events. Jeanne blushed over Vanitas’ compliments. During the date Jeanne was distracted by an airship overhead, and Vanitas saved her from an incoming vehicle. Much to her frustration, Jeanne managed to enjoy the date, sightseeing in Paris, and eating snacks. At the end of the day, while Vanitas claimed to take a bathroom break, Jeanne practiced confessing her love to Vanitas, but she found the words extremely hard to say. Vanitas materialized behind her and cheerfully commented that he liked her too. Jeanne yelled that he was supposed to hate her and gaze at her scornfully, which Vanitas found amusing. Soon after, a group of children ran by, and one of them fell over and scraped his knee. Jeanne was immediately overwhelmed by bloodlust and her eyes turned red. Surrounding passersby noticed and revealed her identity as a vampire. Before Jeanne could attack, Vanitas stopped her, and Dante, who had been watching with Dominique nearby, threw up a smokescreen. Vanitas and Jeanne escaped to an atelier, where Vanitas asked Jeanne if she was a curse-bearer, addicted to blood, or something else. Jeanne was unable to answer, causing Vanitas to question whether someone had cursed her to forbid her from speaking about it. This prompted Jeanne to remember Ruthven commanding her to swear something. Jeanne begged Vanitas for blood and drank desperately after receiving his permission. After seeing a vision of Luca, dead because of her, Jeanne asked Vanitas what she would do if she hurt Luca one day with her strange sickness. Vanitas replied that if that time came, he would kill her out of love, so she had nothing to worry about. Beast of Gévaudan Arc After receiving news of the Beast of Gévaudan's return, Jeanne was sent by Lord Ruthven to put an end to the matter of the Beast after her inability to kill it during its previous appearance. She arrived while Vanitas and his companions were being attacked by wolves summoned by the Beast and subsequently saved Vanitas. However, after being distracted by the Parade of Charlatan's arrival, Jeanne was attacked by Astolfo, which caused Vanitas to intervene and become injured and poisoned in her place. Feeling a sense of obligation, Jeanne took Vanitas and nursed him to health, despite his vehement protestations. The vulnerability he exhibited while he was poisoned appealed to her; however, her refusal to leave him to die caused him to treat her coldly instead, to her disappointment. After Vanitas' recovery, Jeanne joined him, Dante, and Johann on their way to the d'Apchier's castle. She and Vanitas came to a dispute regarding how to handle the Beast, as Jeanne intended to kill it while Vanitas intended to save it. After he questioned whether she truly desired to kill the Beast, the two parted ways, and Jeanne would face the Beast once again. Eventually, Queen Faustina's brief manifestation caused Chloé to lose control over her malnomen. This loss of control sent those around her into their darker memories, including Jeanne. Jeanne recalled her past in which she was raised to be a doll and tool before meeting and becoming adopted by Éric and Louise, Ruthven's students, as well as the events that happened after, leading their deaths and her status as a bourreau. Fearful of the repercussions should she disobey again, Jeanne attempted to stifle her desire to save Chloé; however, Vanitas reached through to her and encouraged her to state her desire, promising to fulfill it for her. Alongside Jean-Jacques, Jeanne broke through to Chloé, which allowed Vanitas to activate the Book of Vanitas and cure her. In the aftermath, Jeanne became so happy and grateful to Vanitas, she expressed her feelings by drinking his blood and kissing him, then reminded him of his promise to kill her should she lose control of herself
