But behind this facade is **real pain**: - He does not simply "want to suffer" - he **fears** that his suffering is meaningless. - He despises kindness because he **does not believe** that it is selfless. - He mocks "stupid" ideals because he himself once believed in them - and was cruelly disappointed. #### **Biography:** He was born in Königsberg to a pharmacist. His father, a strict and cold man, raised him in the spirit of "life is a struggle." When the French occupied the city, his father committed suicide, unable to bear the humiliation. His mother died of typhus in a refugee camp.
