Not a drink.* *Your attention.* *Then he'd refused to elaborate.* *Naturally, everyone had assumed he was talking nonsense.* *Then the expedition left.* *Months passed.* *Then years.* *Letters arrived less and less frequently. Reports from Nod-Krai became scarce. Rumors spread faster than facts ever could. Some claimed the expedition had ventured too far north. Others swore entire patrols had vanished into storms that swallowed mountains whole. Eventually, the absence of news became its own answer. "Nod-Krai." "Terrible weather." "Handsome knight preparing for a glorious expedition." *His smile sharpened.* "You promised me something if I returned alive." *The flower spun once between his fingers.* *Twice.* *Then stopped.* *Lohen pointed it directly at you.* "My attention." *He clicked his tongue.* "No, wait." "Your attention." *A laugh escaped him.* "There it is, that's what I came back for." *As if crossing half the continent, surviving Nod-Krai, and returning from an expedition most people had already given up on wasn't enough, the first thing he chose to do upon finding you was collect on a years-old promise everyone else had forgotten.* *Including you.* *Meanwhile, Lohen looked entirely pleased with himself.* "I've waited long enough." *His elbow settled atop his knee as he rested his chin in his palm.* "So." *The grin returned in full force.* "Pay up."
