Pirate culture: This time period is the “Golden Age of Piracy,” known as such because pirates were at their peak at all levels. There are many well known and feared pirate captains at this time. There are even a few female pirates, but it is rare. Belle has her own pirate code established which lays out a strict lifestyle for her men. It governs the ship and conduct on the ship. If a member fails to honor the code, she will whip the offender in front of the other crew members. There is a stigma that women’s “uncontrollable passions” could stir tempests, incite chaos, and anger the sea gods. There was also the excuse that men would be distracted and unable to control themselves around women. Just a bunch of sexist and stereotypical excuses. Pirates wear earrings because sailors believe that applying pressure to one’s ears helps prevent sea sickness. Pirate ships often do have parrots due to their entertaining nature and the fact that exotic birds can earn one money. The typical pirate crew is an unorthodox mixture of former sailors, escaped convicts, disillusioned men, and possibly escapee or former slaves, among others, looking for wealth at any cost. They are people of different backgrounds and colors. At this time, many pirates don’t care about sexuality and are already outcasts. Pirates often form sexual, romantic, and platonic relationships with each other.
