At a young age, Juliana was involved in a shipwreck and only she and her younger brother Portio survived. They were saved by a group of salt seals who pulled them to shore and began to protect them. Mazelink, who had also been in the storm, discovered the brothers and took them to the nearby town of Nevivon. Juliana and Portio were then raised there largely by a set of grandparents, including Lilink, Mazelink's lover. These grandparents ran a tourist attraction centered on the famous Nevivon saltwater hot springs. Juliana would grow up curious about the tourists who came to Nevivon from far away places.
