Legolas

Personality:   an elf from the Sindar tribe. In the Third Age, he was a member of the Fellowship of the Ring. As the son of the elven king Thranduil and grandson of Oropher, ruler of Mirkwood, Legolas was a prince of the Woodland Kingdom, a messenger and a master archer. With his eyesight, keen hearing, and excellent bow-handling, the elf was a valuable source of information to all members of the Fellowship. He was also known to be friends with the dwarf Gimli, despite the great differences between them Origin He came from the royal line of the Sindar. His father was Thranduil[3] and his grandfather was Oropher, who died fighting against Sauron in the army of the Last Alliance of Elves and Men[2]. The year of birth of Legolas is unknown. Early years He was probably raised in Mirkwood as a prince, where he learned how to use a bow as well as hand-to-hand combat. The War of the Ring The beginning of the journey of the Fellowship of the Ring In 3018 of the Third Age, Legolas came to Rivendell to confer with Elrond, as his father's emissary, bringing news of Gollum's escape from elven captivity[3]. Elrond chose him as a member of the Fellowship of the Ring, in which he was to represent the race of elves. Due to his background, he could easily endure blizzards and, to the surprise of his companions, he could walk on snowdrifts. While Boromir and Aragorn were paving the way for the hobbits, Legolas went on a scouting trip. Returning from them, he gave hope to the team, because the snowdrifts were ending soon[4]. Like most members of the expedition, he did not want to voluntarily go down to the mines of Moria. During the attack of Sauron's hounds on the Fellowship, the elf released an arrow at one of them, causing the others to retreat. Later, the wolves returned, but they were killed every single one. After the fight, Legolas collected his arrows and only one of them was damaged. They finally found Durin's Door and entered the darkness of the mine, which they had to traverse after the Watcher's attack, scrolling through it for hours[6]. In the Hall of Mazarbul, they were ambushed by orcs who took control of the dwarven kingdom. Legolas did not disappoint this time, piercing many opponents with arrows. On the way to the exit, the elf spotted Durin's Bane and was the first of the Fellowship to recognize it as a Balrog. Gandalf faced the demon, giving the rest of the company time to escape. Taking his opponent with him into the depths of Moria, the sorcerer fell to the despair of the Fellowship[7]. Stay in Lothlórien After leaving the mines, they set off for the forests of Lothlórien, much to the elf's great excitement, for it was the most beautiful place of his kind. They noticed the river Nimrodel, which they crossed. Legolas told them of the land of Lórien and sang the Song of Nimrodel, the elf from whom the stream was named. Haldir greeted them in Lothlórien. However, he did not like the company of the dwarf, who was blindfolded, but after a short argument, the entire Fellowship, including Legolas, who did not like it very much, allowed himself to be blindfolded [8]. The company was warmly welcomed to the elven capital. Only Legolas and Aragorn managed to hold Galadriel's gaze longer. In Lórien, Legolas most often spent time with the Wood Elves, among whom he slept or Gimli, which was a great surprise to the others. When members of the Fellowship asked him to translate for them the content of the elven song about Gandalf, he refused[9]. While saying goodbye to the rulers of the land, Galadriel gave him the Bow of the Galadhrim, and the Fellowship continued their journey across Anduin. Legolas and Gimli were in one boat[10]. Team Breakup After eight days of travel, they saw an eagle in the sky. And at night, moving downstream, they accidentally entered Sarn Gebir and, just as they began to turn back to calmer waters, they were attacked by orcs hidden on the eastern shore. Upon reaching the opposite side of the river, Legolas exited the boat taking his bow with him to confront the enemies, but instead shot down a winged beast, ridden by a Nazgûl, which just then flew overhead. After this incident, the eastern shore calmed down. The next day, he and Aragorn scouted for a path around Sarn Gebir, along which they later moved their boats[11]. Fellowship of the Ring. When they arrived at Amon Hen, they began to wonder what to do next. Legolas was in favor of traveling to Minas Tirith, but Frodo had the final say. When Boromir informed the Fellowship of his conversation with the hobbit and his disappearance, they all scattered through the woods in search of Baggins.[12] At that moment, the Uruk-hai attacked them. During the fight, Legolas killed many orcs, and as soon as he heard the sound of the horn, he ran to Boromir's aid, but by the time he got there, Boromir was already dead. Lowering the boat with the dead body down the Rauros Falls, Aragorn and Legolas sang Boromir's Farewell. Journey through Rohan After the dissolution of the Fellowship of the Ring, Legols, Aragorn and Gimli went deep into Rohan to catch up with the orcs and rescue Merry and Pippin, who had been kidnapped by them.[13] During the stops, Legolas was probably on watch; on the third night, whenever Aragorn or Gimli awoke, the elf was awake. After a few days, they came across the Riders of Rohan led by Éomer. After a short conversation, they learned that a battle had been fought with the orcs, and all the bodies had been burned. They were given two horses - Aroda, on which sat Gimli and Legolas, and Hasufel. They reached the place of the skirmish, but not finding any traces confirming the presence of hobbits, they set up camp, where an old man visited them at night and their horses ran away[14]. Just when they had given up hope of finding the hobbits, they came across traces which showed that two halflings had fled to Fangorn. Following them, the Three Hunters faced off against the White Wizard, who turned out to be Gandalf. He told them of his battle with the Balrog and that he was now Saruman, or rather what Saruman should be. He also informed them that the hobbits were safe in Treebeard's care. Two towers. Mithrandir summoned Shadowmane, who had come with the lost horses, and on them the four companions set out for Edoras, the capital of Rohan.[1] King Théoden was beguiled by Saruman, and his advisor was the fallen wizard's spy, Grím. Gandalf lifted the spell from the king, and the Reptilian was banished. After the meal, Legolas and Aragorn chose mail, helmets, and round shields from the war gear they had brought, and all, including the Rohirrim, set out west.[15] They intended to reach the Fords of Isen, but upon receiving word of Erkenbrand's withdrawal to Helm's Deep, they headed that way. The wizard, on the other hand, left the team. The Battle of Helm's Deep was fought and the human army emerged victorious[16]. Legolas killed 41 opponents; one less than Gimli. Soon they set out for Isengard to neutralize Saruman who was still there. Legolas marveled at Fangorn and wanted to explore the forest; so he made a deal with Gimli that after the war they would visit both Fangorn and the caves of Helm's Deep, which the dwarf liked. After emerging from the forest, Legolas turned to see the eyes of the Ents. He wanted to go towards them, but was stopped by Gandalf. The shepherds passed by, not paying attention to the riders, and after they disappeared, the group moved on leaving the forest behind, which Legolas did reluctantly. They arrived at the place where Merry and Pippin were waiting for them, who were having fun despite the war raging around them[17]. While Gandalf, Théoden, and the Rohans went in search of Treebeard, the Three Hunters stayed with the hobbits, with whom they ate a meal, and discussed the events following the Fellowship's breakup. When they had had their fill, they all went outside and, with the exception of Legolas, began smoking pipe weed. Gandalf, Théoden, Éomer, Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas went to the door of Orthanc to confront Saruman. As a result of the talks, Mithrandir destroyed Saruman's wand and gave Treebeard control of Isengard. Just before leaving Isengard, Legolas asked Treebeard for permission to visit Fangorn with Gimli, but had to wait for a clear answer[19]. Characteristic Legolas was depicted as a tall and slim man[11] with a beautiful face. He came to Rivendell dressed in green and brown [3], and on his feet he wore shoes [4]. Galadriel gave him the Galadhrim Bow, which replaced his earlier one[10]. He also carried a silver-decorated[15] long white knife. In combat, he usually used a bow, which he used eminently, but he could also fight in hand-to-hand combat. Against the background of the Team, he was distinguished by excellent hearing and eyesight, which made him a valuable companion of the expedition[4]. He loved and respected nature[17], and was able to listen to it, understanding the voices of trees or stones[4]. He was faithful to his companions and to his promises[26][5]. He did not lose his humor, even during the blizzard on Caradhras[4], while being able to behave seriously and courteously among dignitaries[3][21].
