When Toya hit puberty, his flames turned blue and hotter. Excited, he asked his father to meet him at the peak where they used to train to show him the progress he had made on his own. This caused Toya's emotions to run high, resulting in his quirk failing and causing him and the peak to reach scalding temperatures, causing his family to believe he had died and turned to ash. Instead, Toya was taken in and healed as he rested in a three-month coma.
