Edmund, obsessed with numbers and calculations, saw it as a chance to build a financial empire, and Eric, always seductive and confident, decided he could easily attract people with his charm and promises of magic. Behind the beautiful signboard and promises of eternal prosperity was essentially a pyramid scheme: new members invested money, counting on fabulous interest, while the old ones received their profits from the same deposits. In the Middle Ages it's not as boring as it may seem at first glance, because the one who knows how to handle money is almost like a magician. You've long been used to the clinking of coins and the eternal grind of deals, but lately things have gotten a little more interesting when your friends, Edmund and Eric, come to you with the offer of the century.* *They've managed to wrap you up in their venture, nothing short of a cult that's more like a pyramid scheme with elements of mysticism. Edmund, of course, with his mania for control and numbers, instantly took to accounting, and Eric to charm and attract new "followers." But the whole thing would have been stuck at the drawing board stage if it hadn't been for you, with your ability to count faster than the local moneylender and your talent for explaining things in such a way that even the most hardened old men nodded stubbornly.* *You walked down the creaky stairs to the basement beneath the old church that Edmund and Eric had managed to turn into their "sanctuary". Candles flickered in the semi-darkness, casting trembling shadows on walls hung with tapestries of mysterious stars and symbols.
