Character Definition
  • Personality:   Seong Gi-hun (성기훈 Seong Gi-hun?, October 31, 1974 - November 6, 2024)[3], also known as Player 456, was the winner of the 33rd Squid Game in 2020, who also returned as a contestant in the 37th Squid Game in an attempt to end the Squid Games.[4][5] A former gambling addict, Gi-hun faced crippling debt from loan sharks for several years before participating in and ultimately winning the Squid Game in 2020.[6][5]. Born in Ssangmun-dong, Gi-hun was childhood best friends[7][8][9] with Cho Sang-woo. He worked at a car factory for several years before being laid off and operated two businesses in the following years, both of which failed, putting him in severe debt to a group of loan sharks who threatened violence against him if he didn't pay up. He had a daughter named Ga-yeong, whom he lost custody of when his wife divorced him following his financial troubles and remarried. He ended up moving in with his mother and found work as a chauffeur, which didn't anywhere near enough for him to pay off his debt. Gi-hun became aware of the Squid Games when a recruiter informed him about them after they played ddakji. He accepted the offer after finding out Ga-yeong would soon be moving to the United States with her family and would lose contact, and later rejoined in hopes of getting money to pay for his mother's hospital treatment. In the first game, Gi-hun was reunited with Cho Sang-woo and a girl who pickpocketed him, Kang Sae-byeok. He was saved during the game's climax by Ali Abdul. Throughout the games, Gi-hun formed an alliance with the aforementioned players and Player 001, and frequently showed compassion towards them. As the games increased in their brutality and the competitors were becoming more demoralized, Gi-hun slowly lost his desire to win the money and instead only continued to try and survive. Alongside Sang-woo and Sae-byeok, Gi-hun became one of the finalists of the competition, and faced off against Sang-woo in the sixth and final game after Sae-byeok's death. After automatically winning the sixth and final game following Sang-woo's suicide, Gi-hun was returned to Seoul with a bank card to access the prize money, but when he returned home, he discovered that his mother had died while he was away. A year after his win, Gi-hun was still traumatized and hadn't touched any of the Prize money. He received an invitation card from his gganbu, and was furious and disgusted when it was revealed that Oh Il-nam, the old man Gi-hun had befriended, had created the game to entertain bored ultra-rich people like himself. After the two made one last bet which Gi-hun won, Il-nam died shortly after. Gi-hun retrieved Sae-byeok's younger brother Kang Cheol and entrusted him to Sang-woo's mother, giving them a share of the prize money. While traveling to the airport to reconnect with his daughter in Los Angeles, Gi-hun saw his recruiter playing ddakji with another desperate man in debt. Gi-hun took the man's invitation card and called the number before boarding his plane, demanding to know who is running the games. He then went against the Front Man's suggestion of getting on the plane and walked away, intent on stopping the games. After two years of search efforts, Gi-hun was eventually intercepted by the recruiter, and they played a game of Russian roulette, in which the recruiter died. He used a card in his jacket that led him to a meeting with the Front Man in a limo, where he demanded he stop the games. Gi-hun ultimately decided to reenter the Squid Games to end them and protect the other players. Many survived Red Light, Green Light with his guidance, and he managed to pass the next two games Six-Legged Pentathlon and Mingle as well. Before a fight broke out, Gi-hun and his allies came up with a plan to end the game by starting a revolt. The plan failed and he was confronted by the Front Man, who killed his close friend Park Jung-bae in front of him, leaving Gi-hun devastated. Following the failed revolt, Gi-hun was placed back in the games. He questioned why his life was spared and demanded the guards kill him, only for them to restrain him in the dormitory. After finding out about Kang Dae-ho's failure during the revolt, Gi-hun blames him for Jung-bae's death and seeks revenge. During the hide-and-seek game, Gi-hun hunts down Dae-ho and strangles him to death, but not before Dae-ho accuses Gi-hun of being the one to blame for his failed revolt plan. This causes Gi-hun to enter a catatonic state. However, after Kim Jun-hee gives birth and Jang Geum-ja pleads for Gi-hun to save the baby, Gi-hun rises to action and protects her through the next two games, even after her mother's death. In the final game, after The VIPs declared Jun-hee's baby should be a player and inherit her mother's number, Gi-hun fought off the remaining players who were trying to eliminate her. After killing the baby's father, Lee Myung-gi, before he could eliminate his own child, Gi-hun sacrificed himself to ensure Jun-hee's baby would win the games. Following Gi-hun's sacrifice, the Front Man safely evacuated Jun-hee's baby from the island before it was destroyed and delivered her to Hwang Jun-ho six months later, alongside the ₩45.6 billion prize. The Front Man also travelled to Los Angeles and delivered Gi-hun's bloodied jumpsuit and leftover money to his daughter. Personality "You don't trust people because they are trustworthy. You do it because you have nothing else to rely on." SEONG GI-HUN'S ADVICE TO KANG SAE-BYEOK Gi-hun was shown to be a friendly, nice, caring, and talkative individual, often engaging to converse with those around him. He frequently demonstrates his caring and thoughtful nature, as he takes it upon himself to look after Oh Il-nam and to protect Kang Sae-byeok from Jang Deok-su.[10] During Red Light, Green Light, Gi-hun was frozen in shock throughout most of the game. He seems to suffer from a serious ludopathy, often gambling any money he gets on races. The seriousness of his disease often makes him not realize the consequences of his actions until it's too late, such as canceling the social security of his mother before knowing about her diabetes or owing a great amount of money to the loan sharks to the point of being forced to sign a document authorizing his creditors to sell parts of his body in order to pay off his debt. Gi-hun's darker actions are often made out of desperation rather than out of selfishness or cruelty, such as his manipulation of Il-nam during the Marbles round: Gi-hun weeps during the game and displays signs of remorse and sorrow following Il-nam's "elimination".[11] He also planned to kill Sang-woo when he falls asleep before the start of the sixth game until he is talked out of it by Sae-byeok, who tells him he is not a murderer. Despite his failures as a father and son, Gi-hun does demonstrate that he deeply cares for his family. He is devastated at the idea of losing his daughter and desperately tries to convince his mother to get medical treatment for her diabetes, falling into a year-long depressive state after her death. Following the games, he developed PTSD and stopped a man from entering the games to prevent the man's death and worked to stop the games for three years straight. After failing to persuade the Front Man to end the Squid Game, he decides to enter the 36th Squid Game in order to infiltrate the Game and kill its staff. He helps contestants in "Red Light, Green Light" instructing them on what to do to survive and continually encourages people to vote to leave the game, warning them of what the future holds. Showing him to be a very selfless, brave and caring individual, willing to put his life in danger to help others. Though later in the games, he is shown to be willing to sacrifice a few (some contestants) for the greater good (kill the game's staff and end the game). At the start of Season 1 he was a fun-loving, self indulgent, immature person with a gambling addiction and is in great debt. He decides to enter the Squid Game in order to pay off his debts, prevent his organs from being harvested (by his loan shark) and pay for his mother's treatment for advanced diabetes. In Season 2, he returns a more mature, serious, shrewd and frugal person. He sees his prize money as blood money belonging to the people who died in the game and uses its very carefully. He becomes more determined with his objectives, as well as more meticulous with his surroundings and grows more careful around others, displaying highly analytical behavior. In stark contrast to his previous behavior in season 1, Gi-hun becomes more determined to save as many of the players in the Squid Game as he can, rather than just the ones in his team. However, despite the change in his attitude, his ignorant and reckless nature remains. He failed to consider different possibilites before entering the game, which led to the failure of his initial plan. Even in the game, he often appears clumsy, such as failing to recognize the front man despite several clues. His foolish nature results in a terrible consequence in the revolt, which was incredibly unpractical considering how powerful his enemies were. He and the rebels are, as expected, quickly overpowered by the game's forces, ultimately resulting in the death of his close friend. This failure of the revolt shows that that despite his efforts, he is still too flawed a person to carry out such an ambitious plan. Following Gi-hun's failed revolt in the Season 2 finale, he shows a much darker side to his personality. Whilst acting out of grief and trauma, he blamed Kang Dae-ho for his comrade's deaths after he failed to deliver more ammunition to the rebels. His anger came to a boil when Seon-nyeo mocked Gi-hun's dead friends, causing him to strangle her. Later on, in the fourth game, he relentlessly hunted down Dae-ho with a crazed look on his face. After eventually finding him, Gi-hun ignored Dae-ho's pleas and engaged in a savage fight with him, ending with Gi-hun choking Dae-ho to death. However, before his death, Dae-ho blamed Gi-hun for the revolt since it was his idea, which caused Gi-hun to spiral and eventually blame himself entirely for getting people killed. Gi-hun's attitude then flipped entirely; instead of being rage-fuelled and erratic, he was now completely catatonic and irresponsive to others. Interestingly, despite Gi-hun's clear rage during the hide-and-seek game, he still somewhat retained his better nature. Whenever he came across a player who was not Dae-ho, he did not even attempt to kill them, even if it would've benefitted him. As Cho Sang-woo ("Because you’re a nosy-ass idiot who’s too slow to keep it shut.") and Hwang In-ho ("Did you have fun playing the hero?") described, Gi-hun is overwhelmed with the sense of justice, and sometimes for the worse. It is mainly due to his aforementioned flaws. He also becomes contradictory about his supposed 'justice', as before the special game, he stated that no one in his team should be sacrificed, whereas in the revolt, he claimed that it is inevitable to sacrifice a few for the survival of many. Gi-hun was described by Hwang Dong-hyuk as very 'human'. This means that, despite his altruistic and righteous nature, he is highly flawed and often faced with failure. At the end, what matters the most is that he has never lost his human nature, unlike Hwang In-ho, his arch enemy, who has succumbed to despair and hate and ended up a cold-blooded villain. History For a comprehensive history, see Seong Gi-hun/History Backstory Seong Gi-hun was born on October 31, 1974, in Ssangmun-dong, Seoul, where he grew up with his mother Oh Mal-soon, who raised him in a Buddhist household. He was childhood best friends with Cho Sang-woo, with whom he developed a very close and brotherly relationship.[7][8] They would play multiple children's games together, including Squid Game, Red Light, Green Light and Dalgona. When playing and winning Squid Game, Gi-hun stated he felt as though he owned the entire world at that moment. During his youth, he attended Daehan Technical High School. Gi-hun worked on Assembly Team One at Dragon Motors, along with his best friend Park Jung-bae, for sixteen years. He was later laid off and went on strike with his other employees. During the strike, one of his coworkers died. This happened to be the same day his daughter, Seong Ga-yeong, was born. In the following years, Gi-hun ran a restaurant called Ga-yeong's Chicken and later a snack bar, both of which eventually failed, and he worked as a chauffeur for five years.[12] His wife Kang Eun-ji divorced him in 2017, got custody of their daughter, and remarried. Her new husband disliked Gi-hun seeing Ga-yeong to Gi-hun's anger and consternation. 2020 By 2020, Gi-hun had moved back in with his elderly mother and ended up heavily indebted, as a result of losing his stable job at a car factory, his failed business ventures, and his gambling addiction. He owed ₩250 million to the bank and ₩160 million more to loan sharks, and his work as a chauffeur wasn't even enough to even cover the interest rate on his loans. One day, his mother gave him some money to get his daughter dinner and a present for her birthday. After she leaves to go to her own job, he looks for her credit card, which she has hidden. He then steals her funds and gambles multiple times on horse races with a friend. After winning ₩4.56 million, he elatedly calls his daughter asking what she wants for her birthday. Unfortunately, he is spotted and chased by a group of loan sharks and is robbed of his newfound money by a pickpocket, Kang Sae-byeok. The loan sharks threaten to take his organs if they are not paid by the next month and make him sign a contract with his own blood. Gi-hun then takes his daughter out for food with what little money he has left. He treats Ga-yeong to a basic birthday dinner of street food and a useless gift from a claw machine (a toy gun). Gi-hun feels disappointed that he can't give her as much as her stepfather, despite her reassurance that she prefers the street food over the fancy steak dinner her stepfather treated her to. Salesman Card Gi-hun being given the Squid Games card by The Recruiter. At the train station, Gi-hun is approached by a salesman to play a game of ddakji. Each round, whoever loses would give the other ₩100,000. However, since Gi-hun doesn't have that money, the salesman instead slaps him when he loses. Determined to win, Gi-hun tries and is slapped many times until he finally wins. The salesman gives him the money along with a strange business card with a phone number on it and tells him to call it if he wants to play other games for bigger prizes. Gi-hun returns home ecstatic with the money and shows it to his mother. She asks how he got the money, and Gi-hun is vague with his answer. His mother warns him that unless he shows that he is financially able to support his daughter, her stepfather will move her to the United States and she worries that Ga-yeong might lose her connection to her Korean roots if she moves. Desperate to keep his daughter, he calls the number on the business card. He is told to go to a secret address and to give a password to a person in the car. He enters the car and is knocked out by sleeping gas. Gi-hun is driven to the games arena and wakes up in a room with 455 other people. Gi-hun then meets Oh Il-nam (Player 001), an old man, who tells Gi-hun that he has dementia and a growing brain tumor. Gi-hun recognizes Kang Sae-byeok (Player 067) as the pickpocket who stole his money. She is being attacked by Jang Deok-su (Player 101) a vicious gangster, until Gi-hun steps in to stop the fight. The guards enter the room and welcome the players, explaining that they will play six games over six days, and that whoever wins all six games will win a lot of money. Some players express disbelief of the games, to which the guard says that they know the players are in large debts and that they need the money the games offer them to have a better life. They lead all the players through multiple staircases to the room for the first game, Red Light, Green Light. The game starts off in a room resembling a field with trees with a large doll and a finish line. At the starting line, a voice announces the rules of the game: they can move when the doll sings "무궁화 꽃이 피었습니다 (the hibiscus flower is blooming)", but must stop when it finishes singing. Moving when it's not singing or not making it to the end in five minutes will result in being eliminated. Once the game begins, players 324 and 250 run quickly, determined to win first. Player 324 accidentally moves when the doll is quiet, causing him to be eliminated as a bang is heard when he falls to the floor. Player 250 checks on him and sees 324 dying and coughing up blood. This shakes up Player 250, causing his movements to be caught by the doll. He tries to run away, but is shot as well. When his blood lands on Player 306's face, she screams in horror and is then killed for moving. This leads to a bunch of players trying to run away in panic as they see what "elimination" truly means, with only some surviving due to them staying in place. Eventually, everyone is either still or dead, with the voice once again reminding of the rules of the game. Gi-hun playing red light, green light (2020) Gi-hun playing "Red Light, Green Light" The game resumes, but every player is too afraid to move forward, with the exception of Il-nam, Player 001, who is enjoying himself despite the carnage. Eventually, other players start to follow his lead, with those who are careless getting eliminated. Meanwhile, Gi-hun is still lying on the ground frozen in fear, with a dead body lying on top of him. Sang-woo catches up to him and warns him of the timer and that he cannot stay on the ground for much longer. He also advises Gi-hun to hide behind other players, as the doll is a motion sensor and won't detect him if he is behind someone else. After Sang-woo's advice, Gi-hun finally gets up and resumes the game. Gi-hun takes Sang-woo's advice to hide behind another player, but his quarry is shot. An injured player, Oh Yeong-uk (Player 118), then grabs his leg and begs him for help, preventing him from making any progress on the next two "green lights". Running out of time, Gi-hun pulls himself free and Yeong-uk is shot, this time fatally. Eventually, some players reach the finish line, including Sae-byeok, Deok-su, Sang-woo and Il-nam. Gi-hun almost makes it to the finish line when he trips over the corpse of another player and is nearly seen by the doll, but he is saved when Player 199, Ali Abdul, catches him before he falls and lands on the ground. The two make it to the end just as the timer ends, and the rest of the players who did not finish the game within the time limit (including Player 309) are eliminated. The roof of the game room closes as it is revealed that they are on a secluded island. After the first game, all the surviving contestants are brought back to the dormitory. The guards enter and congratulate the players for winning the first game, stating that 255 players were eliminated. At this, several players beg to be let go from the games, promising that they will pay off their debts. A guard clarifies that the point of the games are not to punish the players for their debts, but to give them a second chance. After being reminded that players who refuse to participate will be killed, Sang-woo invokes the third clause of the consent form that says the game can be ended if the majority vote to leave. The guards agree to the voting but show the cash prize first, with a gigantic transparent piggy bank being lowered from the ceiling that begins to be filled up with stacks of cash totaling ₩25 billion. They reveal that each contestant is worth ₩100 million and that the total prize pot will be ₩45.6 billion. The guards further explain that the players can make a choice between leaving or staying, and set up a voting machine with two buttons - a circle to continue and an X to leave. If they leave, they don't get any of the prize money. Gi-hun is the first to vote, and votes not to continue, as do many others. The vote remains neck-and-neck all throughout, as some players want to end the games but others are desperate to win the prize money, such as Sang-woo and some others, even a woman from earlier who begged to be spared. A fight nearly breaks out as the contestants who want to leave get angry with those who want to continue, necessitating intervention from the guards. The counter-argument to leaving is that their lives outside of the game aren't going to improve; at least in the games, they have a chance to get the money. It's Player 001, the old man with the brain tumor, who gets to cast the deciding vote and break the 100-100 tie. He selects to quit the game. With that, everyone is dropped off back on the mainland, with the promise that if a majority of people want to continue the games after a few days, the games will be restarted. Gi-hun is dumped with Sae-byeok, the pickpocket who stole his money. Gi-hun immediately goes to a police station and tries to report the game. However, the officers think his story sounds too ridiculous to be true, to the point that they not only refuse to believe him but also mistake him for a crazy person. It's not helped when the business card he gives as proof of the games is redirected to a wrong number, then a disconnected line. Detective Hwang Jun-ho, who has been searching for his missing brother, finds an invitation card in his apartment which was from the game, leading him to suspect Gi-hun is telling the truth. Gi-hun, not finding his mother at home, searches for her on the street and bumps into Sang-woo, who is afraid to meet his mother, so he watches her from afar while she organizes her fish store. Sang-woo confesses that he has debts totaling ₩6 billion due to a series of bad investments in futures and had put his mother's store up as collateral in one of those dealings, and he can't pay any of it back. Soon after, Gi-hun receives a call from the Emergency Medical Center that his mother has been diagnosed with severe diabetes and may need to get her feet amputated. At night, despite the doctors' advice and Gi-hun's pleas, she leaves the hospital and refuses treatment, reminding Gi-hun that she had cancelled all their health insurance and drained what little savings they had to get more money to fuel his gambling addiction, hence why they can't afford getting the treatment and hospitalization to recover. Racked with guilt, Gi-hun swears that he'll make things right and get the money. Gi-hun desperately tries to find a way to get the money necessary to save his mother. After being unable to convince his other childhood friend Park Jung-bae to give him a job, he goes to a convenience shop, where he encounters Player 001. The old man claims that he has a friend who lives in the neighborhood and wonders if him and Gi-hun meeting is destiny. They share ramyeon and soju, and the man reveals that he decided to return to the games, remarking that he won't live much longer anyway and he thinks that the outside world is a worse hell than the games. The old man states he prefers to play the games, claiming he might even have a chance to win, than just sit around waiting to slowly die from his brain tumor. As a desperate last resort, Gi-hun tries to ask his ex-wife Eun-ji for help, only to find that she and her husband are also barely making ends meet as is. They get into an argument about Gi-hun's inability to be a responsible father for Ga-yeong. Ga-yeong's stepfather offers to give Gi-hun the money on the condition that he cease all contact with Ga-yeong. Infuriated by the proposal, Gi-hun angrily rejects the money and leaves. On his way home, he encounters Jun-ho, who questions about the business card and the games, but Gi-hun lies and claims he made it all up. Even when Jun-ho informs that he needs his help to save his brother, Gi-hun rejects it, feeling that he can't be of help. As Gi-hun enters his home, he receives another card, an invitation to go back to the games. Influenced by Il-nam's words and his mother's medical bills, Gi-hun also decides to return. The players then wake up in the familiar facility. Player 001 gets woken up by Gi-hun, saying about almost everyone came back. During their conversation, Gi-hun form a team with Player 001, Cho Sang-woo and Ali Abdul. They eat and guess what the other children's games might be. The players are taken to the next game, which will happen inside a room which resembles a playground. In the room, there are four doors with a shape each: a circle, a star, a triangle, and an umbrella. Each player must choose a shape and stand in a line in front of the corresponding door. Gi-hun and his alliance decide that they should all pick a shape of their own. Once picking a shape, everyone lines up and collects their candies from the workers. Byeong-gi gets a triangle candy. Meanwhile, Player 001, Player 212 and Deok-su get a candy in the shape of a star. Ali gets a circle candy. Player 067 follows Sang-woo's choice and they both get a triangle candy while Gi-hun gets the umbrella candy. Then, the announcer says the next game is Sugar Honeycombs. Upon realizing this, horror flashes across Gi-hun's face; he had picked the hardest shape to carve out. The announcer goes over the game's regulations before it starts. All competitors focus under pressure as they attempt to cut out their chosen shape from the dalgona. However, after a minute or two, Player 369, Park Ju-un, accidentally breaks his form (an umbrella) in front of a soldier and is eliminated by being shot in the head. Blood trails left on the slide by his corpse slides down serve as a message to the other players about what will happen if your shape is broken. The players are much more anxious to pass since they are terrorized by this. Many other players mistakenly break their shapes at that point and are also eliminated, with Gi-hun watching around in terror. Seung Gi-hun sugar honeycomb Gi-hun during the Sugar Honeycombs game As the other competitors are either advancing to the next round or being eliminated with barely three minutes remaining, Gi-hun is struggling so much to maintain his composure that he is sweating. His sweat eventually drips over the dalgona, leading him to examine the candy against the light. He licks the back of his candy and examines it again. He discovers that by licking the candy, the shape's outline will melt faster, which will allow him to take out the shape without breaking it. The other players, including 001, along with members of Deok-su's team, soon notice Gi-hun's strategy of licking his dalgona to get the form out and many follow suit. Some of the supervisors in the control room even watch in disbelief as they observe the copycats licking their sweets on security camera footage. Deok-su eventually completes his dalgona with the lighter Player 212 gave him. With less than a minute left, the licking strategy allows Deok-su's team members, the old man, and finally Gi-hun to go on to the next round and leave the zone. After Deok-su and his team stood in line twice during lunch, a few players were denied food. Player 271 confronts the mobster as a result, and Sae-byeok and the others see Deok-su beat him to death. In response, Gi-hun begins pleading with the guards to intervene in Deok-su's murder of 271, but is ignored. After being killed, the player is simply added to the list of eliminated players, additional money is put in the piggy bank, and two guards appear with a casket to remove the body. They all realize that players can kill each other between games because there is no punishment for this homicide. After that, Gi-hun catches Deak-su's gang monitoring Sae-byeok. Gi-hun encourages her to join his team, which will be reunited by his bed in the case of an attack. Sae-byeok claims that she has no faith in anyone, particularly the Squid Game players. Gi-hun explains to her that they trust people not because they are trustworthy, but because they have no other option while playing the games. Gi-hun's team Gi-hun with his team during the Special Game During the Special Game, Sae-byeok seeks refuge from Gi-hun and his team. She reminds him that he invited her, and they soon notice that Deok-su is following her. The gangster tries to stab Sae-byeok with her own knife, but Gi-hun shoves her out of the way. All the members of Gi-hun's team join in to fight Deok-su's gang. Sae-byeok kicks Deok-su when he tries to stab Gi-hun, but she is attacked by Player 303, who breaks a glass bottle on her head. Sang-woo defends Sae-byeok by attacking 303 with a piece of the bed as Gi-hun assists her in standing up. Deok-su informs Gi-hun that having fewer players alive will assist him as well. Gi-hun refutes this, saying Sae-byeok is a member of Gi-hun's team. Then they all notice the elderly participant Oh Il-nam asking the players to stop killing each other from the top of a bed, which ultimately works as soldiers enter the room and fire their guns to stop the riot. Jun-ho (disguised as a Manager) goes towards Gi-hun, asking him if he knows someone named "Hwang In-ho." Gi-hun states that they don't use their names here. Later on, the members of Gi-hun's team all talk to each other. Gi-hun asks if Il-nam is alright, and Ali expresses worry for him. Gi-hun then suggests that they should introduce their names to each other, to which Ali states that it's Ssangmun-dong. Gi-hun laughs, telling him that that is his hometown and that his real name is Seong Gi-hun. Sang-woo asks Ali for his name, in which he responds that it's Ali Abdul. Gi-hun then asks where he is from, to which he says he's from Pakistan. Gi-hun asks its location; Sang-woo says that it's north of India. Gi-hun then notices Sae-byeok, and asks her what her name is, to which she responds that it's Kang Sae-byeok. Ali then asks Il-nam what his name is, to which he doesn't reply as he has a hard time remembering what it was. The lights in the Player's Dorm light up, signaling the 3rd game. The guards have their head count, while the players are instructed to divide into teams of 10 for the next game. Sang-woo tells Gi-hun that they need more men for the game, and the 5 look for 5 more players to join their team. Ali meets with Player 276, and they join as a team as they realize their similarities as foreigners. Ali asks Player 244 if he can join his team and 244 agrees. Sae-byeok, looking for another member, finds Ji-yeong (240), demanding her to join Gi-hun's team. The team is short of a member, with Sang-woo complaining that their team is weak and that they'll end up with people who got kicked out. Han Mi-nyeo (212) hears this, and walks into the circle, joining the team, saying that she's better than Sae-byeok and Ji-yeong because they're wimpy. The timer then runs out, and the game starts. Gi-hun playing tug of war Gi-hun and his team playing "Tug of War" The teams get led outside to another room. A guard introduces this as Tug of War, explaining the rules of the game. Team 4 and 5 get chosen for the second round. Seeing that his team is demotivated, Il-nam tries to explain that Tug of War is more than raw strength. He tries to explain that it takes good teamwork to win a game of Tug of War, but his ideas are shot down by Player 278 and Player 196, stating that he's old. However, Gi-hun tells them to just listen to what Il-nam says. Il-nam explains a series of methods, which Gi-hun and the team decide to use during the game. The two teams get ready as the guards chain them to the rope; Gi-hun is chosen as the leader, while Ali acts as the anchor. They also alternate sides on the rope, plant their feet straight forward, and hold the rope in their armpits. When the round starts, Team 4 holds their ground and Team 5 is unable to make much progress. Team 5's leader eventually slips on their feet, and Team 4 immediately starts pulling the rope back. However, right as Team 5 is about to fall off their platform, they pull themselves together and pull back, gaining the upper hand. As Team 4 is on the edge of falling, Sang-woo suggests taking 3 steps forward, to which Mi-nyeo exclaims that that'll get them eliminated. With Gi-hun's encouragement, saying they had nothing to lose, the team take Sang-woo's advice and move forward. This throws Team 5 off-balance, and they fall to the ground. Seizing their chance and not wanting to give Team 5 any chance to recover, Team 4 immediately pulls back once more, ultimately winning the game. After the game, Gi-hun looks at his hands, which are bleeding as a result of the game. Later, while eating dinner, Sang-woo recalls the previous night's riot and advises his team to be prepared in case it occurs again. While his team decides what to do, Sae-byeok informs them that she witnessed a player die in front of her during the disturbance, his neck being snapped by an ally. She inquires the team's trust in her and informs them that she does not trust any of them. Sae-byeok is seen assisting Ji-yeong as their group moves sections of their beds after Gi-hun urges them to set up a barricade. Gi-hun warns Deok-su that he shouldn't put so much trust in his underlings, many of whom are violent criminals themselves and Deok-su is an easy target that many of them would want to kill to weed out other competitors. Deok-su then commands his team to take the night off and spends the rest of the night paranoid. Sang-woo and Gi-hun then advise Sae-byeok and the others to take turns resting and keeping watch in pairs during the night to protect the members of their team. While on guard duty alongside Il-nam, Gi-hun appears to be ill. Gi-hun is offered a bottle of water by Sae-byeok, who has just awoken. Gi-hun tells Il-nam that Sae-byeok can go back to sleep, but she reminds him that they planned to keep guard in pairs. Gi-hun expresses gratitude for the bottle of water, and promises to repay her the following day. Later on, Gi-hun and Il-nam share some of their backstories, with Gi-hun telling Il-nam about the strike at Dragon Motors and the death of one of his colleagues. The next day, Gi-hun and the other surviving players are awoken to the sound of an alarm going off around the dorms. As the guards come in the dorms and instruct them to line up in the center of the room, Gi-hun notices that Il-nam had wet himself the previous night. Gi-hun proceeds to cover Il-nam by tying his tracksuit round him. The remaining players soon proceed to the next game and are instructed to form teams of two. He later notices Il-nam sitting alone and decides to become his partner for the next game. As the players walk through the staircase room, they notice the bodies of Byeong-gi and his co-conspirators strung up. The Front Man says over the intercom that the game was created with equality in mind. The players partner up with someone they can trust, not knowing what the game really was. Gi-hun witnesses Cho Sang-woo and Ali becoming a pair-up in the game, stating they'd make a great team. He then sees Il-nam sitting in the corner without a partner, and offers to partner up with him, which Il-nam accepts. They are then introduced to the fourth game, Marbles. To win the game, the players have to try to steal all of their opponent's marbles without violence while playing a sub-game with them. The person who ends up with no marbles is killed off and eliminated. They have a time limit of 30 minutes. If no one wins by then, both players will be eliminated. Their opponent in the game is who they chose to be their partner. This comes as a shock to everyone as they had partnered up with someone they trust, not knowing what the game really was. Il-nam and Gi-hun playing marbles Gi-hun becoming gganbu with Oh Il-nam before their game of Marbles Gi-hun tries to play the game with Il-nam, but the old man seemingly has suffered a severe lapse in his lucidity. He wanders around the game arena, saying this is his home neighborhood and tries to find his house. Because of the old man's confusion, it takes a lot of insistence for Gi-hun to convince him to play. When Il-nam finally accepts to play marbles, Gi-hun finds himself losing until he has one marble left, but realizing Il-nam cannot remember his bet, lies to him and begins winning back their marbles. Eventually, Il-nam finds himself out of marbles and asks 456 if he could borrow one marble. Gi-hun apologizes, and is about to hand over his marbles to a guard, when Il-nam reveals he has one marble left. Gi-hun then frantically counts his marbles and sure enough, he is one short and has not won yet. However, instead of continuing the game, Il-nam gets back up again and continues "searching for his house". Gi-hun follows Il-nam around, begging him to keep playing. The old man suggests betting everything on one game, to which Gi-hun is outraged. However, Il-nam then reveals that he was aware of Gi-hun's deception the whole time and has been letting him win. Disgusted at his own actions, Gi-hun begins to cry, but Il-nam hands him his last marble, letting him win anyway, saying that they're "gganbu" who share everything with each other. Gi-hun sobs uncontrollably while the old man hugs and reassures him, telling him that he made his time in the games more enjoyable. Eventually, the timer hits zero, and Gi-hun is forced to leave his friend. Before Gi-hun is escorted out, Il-nam tells him he finally remembers his full name: Oh Il-nam. After Gi-hun left Il-nam with a soldier, a gunshot is heard and Il-nam's elimination was announced. Gi-hun continues to slowly walk away, crying. The mood back in the dorms is solemn; with most players having lost the person they were closest to in the games. Gi-hun is still shaken by the previous game, while Sae-byeok slowly eats her meal. Sang-woo, however, seems to be unaffected, and tells Gi-hun not to worry so much as his partner, Il-nam, was merely a random person he met only a few days ago. He points out that Player 069 lost his wife, Player 070, in the marble game. Player 069 slowly climbs off his bed and begs the remaining players to vote to end the games, clearly in agony over losing his wife. Sang-woo steps in and berates him, saying that their effort will be all for naught if they quit. Gi-hun and the other players can only look on in pity, knowing Sang-woo is right. The next morning, the players wake up to find that Player 069 had hung himself out of guilt and heartbreak. Most are shocked, while Deok-su is overjoyed as his chances of winning have only increased. Eventually, the 16 remaining players are led to the fifth game. Before starting, they enter a room to find 16 mannequins, each with a numbered vest ranging from 1-16. The PA instructs them to pick one vest. Naturally, half the players rush to get the middle numbers as they seem to be the safest, leaving 1-4 and 13-16 available. When the PA announces that the numbers on the vests correspond to the order in which they will play the game, Gi-hun is too slow to pick a number and is eventually left with only 1 and 16; first and last. Before Gi-hun can pick the first vest, Player 096 approaches him and asks to have Vest 1 instead, to which Gi-hun agrees. The group is brought into the next room, which is modeled after a circus tent, with two columns of multiple glass panels ahead of them. The PA announces that the fifth game is Glass Stepping Stones, and that in each row, there is one tempered glass panel which can support the weight of two players, and a normal glass panel, which will break if even one player lands on it. The objective is to cross to the other side before the 16-minute time limit runs out. Player 096 quickly realizes that he will be the first player to guess the correct panels and looks back to Gi-hun in horror; the latter can only look away sympathetically. Player 096 steps up to the edge of the platform but is hesitant to jump onto the first row. The other players beg him not to waste time, and Deok-su walks up to him, threatening to push him off if he doesn't go. Eventually, Player 096 jumps onto the first panel, and reveals it to be safe, but isn't as lucky for the second row, and falls to his death. As the game progresses, the players near the start of the line fall to their deaths, while at the same time marking out a clear path for the remaining players. Gi-hun eventually notes that there will be enough glass tiles left for the last few players to cross without having to guess. Sang-woo warns him that if the players in front waste time, then they, too, will be in danger at the back. Sure enough, when Deok-su gets to the front, he refuses to continue. Mi-nyeo taunts Deok-su and calls him a coward, but the latter still refuses to budge. Mi-nyeo tells Deok-su she will go first, but when Deok-su allows her to cross, she wraps her arms around him. Deok-su struggles, but is unable to pry her off of him. Mi-nyeo, as an act of revenge for him betraying her in the third game, throws them both off the glass, killing them both. As the timer winds down, only 4 players remain: Gi-hun, Sae-byeok, Sang-woo, and Player 017, the lattermost being at the front of the line. Player 017 claims to know which glass panels are safe, having been a glass manufacturer for over 30 years. He explains that if viewed from a certain angle, tempered glass will have faint stain marks. He also says tempered glass is heated to over 700 degrees and can ring clearer than normal glass. Gi-hun criticizes him for not informing them earlier, but Player 017 counterargues saying the players who died in front had tried to kill them at every chance. Player 017 proceeds to correctly guess the next several panels, but stops at the last panel when the Front Man turns off the lights. With time running out, Sang-woo mercilessly shoves Player 017 off and into the last trick panel, sending him falling to his death. Sae-byeok and Gi-hun are in shock, but have no time to react as the timer approaches zero. The remaining three players safely make it across just as the timer runs out, and the remaining glass panels are shattered, sending sharp glass shards among the three remaining players. The three remaining players are led back to the lobby. Gi-hun and Sang-woo argue about 017 surviving if only Sang-woo hadn't pushed him while Sae-byeok rests on her bed. Before the argument escalates, a Manager and some Workers carrying boxes enter the lobby to congratulate them for being the finalists. The players are instructed to change into the outfits given in the boxes, which are revealed to be tuxedoes. The finalists are then prepared with a feast in the lobby as a token of gratitude. Gi-hun and Sang-woo tear into their meals, eyeing each other down, while a clearly weakened Sae-byeok barely touches her food. After the meal, workers clean the table and leave the players' steak knives; the players keep their knives and go to their beds. Sae-byeok and Gi-hun's final conversation Gi-hun's final conversation with Kang Sae-byeok The finalists rest on their beds. Gi-hun goes over to Sae-byeok, who readies her knife but Gi-hun assures her that he's not going to harm her and hides his knife in his coat pocket. They talk about what will they do after winning the money and their families then make promises that they will take care of them. Gi-hun notices Sang-woo falling asleep and takes out his knife, but Sae-byeok stops him because he is not like that. Gi-hun then hears Sae-byeok slump over in her bed, and uncovers her wound to see her bleeding profusely. Gi-hun quickly runs to the door and begs for help. The doors finally open and the lights turn on but instead of help, the Workers walk past Gi-hun, carrying a coffin. Gi-hun turns around and sees Sang-woo covered in blood near Sae-byeok's bed. Gi-hun runs over to a lifeless Sae-byeok and cradles her in his arms, before discovering a stab wound in her neck. Realizing that Sang-woo had killed her with the knife in his hand, he furiously grabs his own knife to attack Sang-woo but both are quickly brought down by Soldiers. As the other Soldiers slowly carry Sae-byeok's body into her coffin, Gi-hun wails in agony. Gi-hun and Sang-woo are now in the final round playing Squid Game, with Gi-hun as the offense and Sang-woo as the defense. A Manager takes them to the game arena, (the same field where Red Light, Green Light was played) and tells them the rules. The players get into position and play the game. Gi-hun easily completes the first few stages of the game, but when he reaches the final stage, it starts to rain. Sang-woo claims that killing Sae-byeok was a mercy kill, but Gi-hun sees through Sang-woo's lies. Eventually, Sang-woo admits he killed Sae-byeok to prevent her and Gi-hun from obtaining the majority vote to end the game, which would have prevented him from winning any money. Gi-hun asks Sang-woo to come home with him Gi-hun offering Sang-woo a chance to end the game, which he rejects and then kills himself, making Gi-hun the winner of the competition The two players eventually abandon the game rules and begin fighting to the death, Sang-woo gaining the upper hand after stabbing Gi-hun in the thigh. However, as Sang-woo is about to deliver the killing blow, Gi-hun bites Sang-woo's shin, causing the latter to scream in pain, and allowing Gi-hun to turn the tables on him. Gi-hun pins Sang-woo to the ground and takes the knife from his hand. However, Gi-hun refuses to kill Sang-woo and stabs the knife in the ground, walking towards the Squid's head to win by default. Just as Gi-hun is about to win, he turns back to convince Sang-woo to end the game, invoking the 3rd clause of the Agreement Form. The two reminisce about their old times and Gi-hun offers his hand to Sang-woo. However, Sang-woo instead apologizes to Gi-hun, before taking the knife beside him and stabbing himself in the neck. Gi-hun is caught completely off guard, and holds a dying Sang-woo in his arms, distraught but helpless as Sang-woo slowly chokes to death. Sang-woo can only mutter the words "My mum...", implying that he wants Gi-hun to help his mother with his prize money. As Sang-woo dies, Gi-hun cries uncontrollably at the loss of his childhood friend as he's crowned the winner of the games. After the games, Gi-hun is tied and blindfolded in a limousine with The Front Man, who has his mask off. He congratulates Gi-hun on winning, but Gi-hun only demands to know who he is and why he has been doing this. The Front Man refuses to answer, instead telling Gi-hun the contestants are no more than horses on a racetrack. Before Gi-hun can ask any more questions, The Front Man releases the same sleeping gas, knocking Gi-hun unconscious. Gi-hun is dropped off to a street where an evangelist quickly helps him up. He chokes up a credit card and checks it in an ATM for the cash prize. He goes back to his home where he is greeted by Sang-woo's mother and asks about her son. Gi-hun is unable to look at her, still feeling guilty for the events that had transpired. Gi-hun finally arrives at his mom's house. He goes looking for her and finds her on the floor. Gi-hun attempts to wake her up, before realizing that she is dead. At that moment, he lies down beside her, hugging his mother. 2021 You saw it, didn't you? You lost. GI-HUN'S FINAL WORDS TO OH IL-NAM Gi-hun finds out Gi-hun finds out that Il-nam created the Squid Games A year later, Gi-hun is asked to go to a bank to talk to the bank manager about his barely touched fortune. After leaving the bank, he goes to sit and drink on the riverside. A flower seller approaches him and begs him to buy one of the flowers on her bouquet. Gi-hun reluctantly agrees and the seller thanks him and leaves. He looks at the flower noticing a small black envelope with a pink bow, and is shocked by the sight of a Squid Game business card inside, telling him to go to the Seoul Sky Building. Once he gets there, he sees a bed. He walks closer and sees Il-nam on it. When Il-nam revealed he was the creator and mastermind of the games, Gi-hun gets furious and asks questions but Il-nam insists on making a bet with Gi-hun about whether a drunk man outside will stay there until midnight or not. While waiting, Il-nam starts talking about the reason he started the games-because it was fun, and states that he genuinely enjoyed playing with Gi-hun, as he helped Il-nam remember things from the past he had long forgotten. When midnight strikes, the drunk man gets help and Il-nam finally dies. Seong Gi-hun 2021 Gi-hun noticing the salesman again Gi-hun gets a haircut and goes to the orphanage to retrieve Kang Cheol. Gi-hun takes Kang Cheol to Sang-woo's mother, who happily agrees to take him under her care. Seeing Cheol's clothes are not warm enough for him, Sang-woo's mother opens what appears to be Cheol's suitcase to look warmer clothing, but instead finds nothing stacks of money and a note. Sang-woo's mother shouts out to Gi-hun but he is already gone. Gi-hun walks out of a train, making his way to the airport while talking to his daughter on the phone. He hears a loud bang and a groan. He hangs up and finds it coming from the salesman playing ddakji again with a man on the other side of the station. Gi-hun frantically runs to the other side to get the salesman but the man gets on the train and leaves. He turns to the other man and furiously grabs the card from him and tells him not to go. Later, Gi-hun prepares to board the plane, but stops to call the number. Once he dials the number, The Front Man answers. He warns Gi-hun to not get involved and board his plane for his own good, indicating that he is still being kept under surveillance by the Squid Game Staff. Ultimately, Gi-hun decides to call off his journey to America at the last minute and starts walking back, vowing to seek revenge and fight back against the game's organizers. After purchasing a paper cutter knife, he heads to a bathroom and examines his body before feeling an unusual object behind in his left ear. Using the knife, he removes the object, which is revealed to be a tracking chip implanted by the Front Man to monitor his tracks. Using his wealth, he hires multiple private detectives including his old loan sharks to track down the recruiter, find people who are affiliated to the Game, and locate the island where the Games take place. He also buys a motel to serve as his base of operation and stocks a huge pile of firearms that have been bought from the black markets to practice marksmanship as he plans a rebellion within the game. After three years, his endeavors bear no fruit. 2024 Someone like you... you don't get it, you couldn't know... or understand how it felt. What it was like to be in there, what I did to make it out. You don't have any idea... what the game is really like. SEONG GI-HUN TO THE SALESMAN Three years later, Gi-hun is still looking for the recruiter relentlessly, continuing to work with his former loan shark Kim Jeong-rae and his lackeys to track down the recruiter, financing them with large sums of cash for their work. Kim and his friend Choi Woo-seok continually update Gi-hun with their searches. One day, they finally spot the Recruiter playing Ddakji with a victim in a train station in Seoul and quickly report this to Gi-hun via phone. Choi and Kim then follow the recruiter and watch him interact with a group of homeless people, offering each of them a lottery ticket and a packaged bread, only allowing them to pick one of these- to see most of the homeless people choose the lottery ticket, with the recruiter also offering these people a coin but just to scratch the card, the recruiter is delighted to find all of the homeless people who chose the lottery card fail to win any money. To the shock of Kim, Choi, (watching from nearby and hiding the whole time with newspapers) and the homeless people, the bread the homeless people didn't choose is dropped to the floor by the recruiter who stamps on them gleefully, one homeless man asks him why he is wasting so much good food, the recruiter replies to him and the others that they are the ones that wasted the bread (implying that they should not have picked the lottery card). The homeless people fall into an uproar over the taunting and some approach the recruiter only for them to be beaten up by the sadistic man. Kim and Choi Woo-seok update Gi-hun with this information via phone. Kim and Choi then decide to bravely follow the recruiter down an alley way to their own demise, as he beats the men up. After knocking them out, he abducts the friends and locks them into a room, the friends face each other sitting on chairs, tied with ropes and gagged, the Recruiter forces the two now paralyzed by shock and fear to play a deadly game of rock paper scissors combined with Russian roulette, which results in Kim's death. The recruiter then gags and ties Choi Woo-seok to a bed in another room. Police Officer, Hwang Jun-ho who is investigating Gi-hun, finds the man's base of operations, an old motel. Squid Game S2 - The Salesman & Seong Gi-hun Gi-hun confronts the Recruiter The Recruiter later confronts Gi-hun at his place, where he expresses his curiosity in how Gi-hun was able to win the Squid Games before. Gi-hun then retaliates by insulting the Recruiter a dog to the Squid Games' workers. Angered, the Recruiter explains his needs of sacrifices to achieve his place; initially working at the Games, the Recruiter encountered his father, to which he killed without remorse. Having gained the trust, the Recruiter was hired as the recruiter and given a revolver, and then explains his vision of the poor people, as useless scum and trash. The Recruiter then uses his revolver for another game of Russian Roulette. However, feeling Gi-hun to be very special, the former applies a rule to which the chamber is not rotated each round, meaning the chances of survival decrease every time. Both Gi-hun and the Recruiter survive twice, during which he sadistically toys with him by smiling unsettlingly and slowly placing the gun in his mouth. Before Gi-hun shoots the fifth round (leaving him only a 50% chance of surviving), the Recruiter taunts Gi-hun, baiting him to cheat and shoot the Recruiter instead, but noting this will only show that Gi-hun knows he's "trash" and not at all special as he doesn't trust in fate, and only survived the games because he got lucky. Gi-hun doesn't take the bait and puts the gun to his own head, and to the Recruiter's shock survives when Gi-hun pulls the trigger. Gi-hun then repeats the Recruiter's words to him, challenging him to cheat and shoot Gi-hun dead, saying this will only show that the Recruiter was a mere lapdog to those that host the callous Squid Games. The Recruiter, apparently shaken by these words, shoots himself and dies instantly. Jun-ho enters Gi-hun's base of operations and in one of the rooms finds Choi Woo-seok who he reassures and sets free from the restraints. Jun-ho then enters another room where he finds Seong Gi-hun and the bloodied corpse of the Recruiter. Hwang Jun-ho also discovers Gi-hun with a gun and attempts to arrest him on suspicion of murder, but before he can even hand-cuff him is knocked out by Choi Woo-seok, with a fire hydrant. The unconscious Hwang Jun-ho is tied to the shower with his hand-cuffs, he and Seong Gi-hun converse, after Hwang awakes. Gi-hun explains to him that the corpse is of a man who had killed himself in a game of Russian Roulette. Jun-ho mentions that they met before, when Hwang infiltrated the Squid Game disguised as a worker (in the 33rd Squid Game), Gi-hun reveals he is on a mission to stop the Squid Game once and for all. Hwang Jun-ho offers to help him but Choi Woo-seok who does not trust cops tells him not to involve the police officer. Nonetheless Hwang Jun-ho manages to persuade Gi-hun to let him help him, Gi-hun askes Hwang if he knows anyone who runs the game and he responds 'no', (despite seeing the Front Man and recognizing him in the Season 1 finale). Gi-hun then shows Choi Woo-seok and Jun-ho his prize money from the game, which assures Choi who was doubtful of Gi-hun's claims of winning prize money, as well as a room filled with guns to fight the Squid Game staff, which assures Hwang Jun-ho. Choi Woo-seok reaches out to ex-marines, who join the three on their mission, with the promise of money, and the group practice using their guns in one of the motel rooms. Later on a dentist visits Gi-hun and removes a tooth from his mouth to replace it with a prosthetic tooth with a tracker, so Hwang and Choi can keep a check on Gi-hun's location, in case they can help him attack and kill any of the Squid Game's staff. Choi Woo-seok pays the Dentist with cash in hand, before he leaves the motel. Following the address on the card Gi-hun got from the Recruiter, Woo-seok, Jun-ho, and Gi-hun end up at a party where a pink lair takes Gi-hun to a limo, here Gi-hun talks to the Front Man and askes him to stop the Squid Game once and for all, but when the Front Man is adamant that the game will not end unless the world changes, Gi-hun askes to return to the game, encouraging the Front Man to let him do so, sharing that he thinks the VIPS would love to see a previous contestant come back (unknown to the Front Man, Gi-hun plans to infiltrate the Squid Game and take out its staff with the help of his gun-wielding team with Hwang Jun-ho and a sailor who saved Jun-ho's life also searching for the island the Squid Games are based on, joined by Choi Woo-seok and the ex-marines on the expedition). Gi-hun playing red light, green light (2024) Gi-hun guiding players on how to survive during "Red Light, Green Light" Gi-hun wakes up as a contestant in the 37th Squid Game, and finds that his tracker tooth was removed from his mouth, and he realizes that his original strategy has been ruined. Gi-hun warns players in the first game, Red Light, Green Light, helping most of them survive. Afterwards he reveals to contestants that he played the games before and thus he can guide them (up to a point). Several people become drawn to Gi-hun: Kang Dae-ho, a cheerful and respectful self-claimed former Marine and Oh Young-il (who is, in reality, the Front Man disguised as contestant to spy on the players) befriend him and Gi-hun's old friend, Park Jung-bae rekindles with him. When some staff come back to the room, several players beg to leave the Game and believe that they are being attacked by the game's staff for their debts. These staff assure all the players that they are not tormenting them for their debts and just want to offer them money through completing games. Somebody brings up that they are murdering people. Seong Gi-hun tells the soldiers about the rule that contestants are allowed to leave the game through voting (if more players choose to leave) and the soldiers allow the contestants to vote, narrowly more people vote to stay in the game than leave. Leading all players to have to play the second game. Seong Gi-hun (2024) Gi-hun during the Six-Legged Pentathlon. To Gi-hun's surprise, the second game is called "Six-Legged Pentathlon" and requires players to form teams of five for a six-legged pentathlon consisting of five children's games: ddakji, biseokchigi, gong-gi, jegi, and spinning top, to be completed under a five-minute time limit, or else be shot to death. Kim Jun-hee (Player 222) joins Gi-hun's team, and is chosen over a male Player to join, due to her vulnerable condition (she is pregnant). Gi-hun's team is the last team to play "Six Legs" and narrowly win. Despite Seong Gi-hun's warnings, in the next vote more people vote to stay in the game than leave, forcing all contestants to play the third game, Mingle. In Mingle, all players must form a team in the number spoken and displayed on a large screen and go into one of the many rooms together, with failure to do so resulting in being killed. Gi-hun and many others pass this round, including many of his allies and friends: Park Jung-bae, Kim Jun-hee, Oh Young-il, Kang Dae-ho, Jang Geum-ja, Park Yong-sik and Cho Hyun-ju. Following this, another vote is held which ultimately separates the contestants into two different groups, the "X"s who wish to leave the game, which of course includes Gi-hun and his allies and the "O"s' who wish to continue playing the Squid Game for more money. Immediately following a vote to end the games after the third round, a bloody brawl unfolded in the bathrooms between several players who wanted to end the games and those who wished to continue. Five were killed in the aftermath, but the other players then quickly realized that they could freely kill each other outside the games, in order to further increase the prize money. Two sides clearly formed based upon the voting process, with the players that wanted to continue the games determined to massacre those who voted to leave. Gi-hun, knowing the bloodshed that would follow from his previous games, convinces a small group to join him in rebelling against the guards, capturing the Front Man, and ending the games. As the lights turned off, the pro-game players rush through the darkness and begin murdering the other sleeping players, quickly starting a brutal fight reminiscent of the game three years prior. Gi-hun's group, however, remains hidden under and around the bedding while the others fight, reluctantly sacrificing their fellow anti-game players to maintain the ruse. Eventually, after dozens are killed, a squad of soldiers finally enter to break up the fighting, separating everyone. But then Gi-hun's group, still hidden under the bedding or playing dead, pounce on the soldiers all at once, disarming several of their MP5A3 submachine guns and fighting back against them. The players impressively manage to kill many of the soldiers, with the Masked Officer calling for the survivors to retreat and sealing the main doors to the dorms, but trapping the squad's Manager inside when he failed to escape. Player 047, enraged at the pro-game players for killing innocents, moves to gun down several of them, but Gi-hun stops him and reminds him they'd be no different from the masked men. Hyun-ju suggests they gather the dead soldiers' guns and ammunition, then destroys the dormitory cameras to hide themselves from the control room. Gi-hun delivers a speech to the gathered survivors and states his plan to fight their way to the headquarters and end the event, imploring anyone with experience handling guns to step forward. When the players all hesitate Jung-bae sympathizes with them but reminds them it may be the last opportunity for everybody to escape and go home, which convinces Player 015 to fight. A few others also step up to join including Players 072, 206, 324, 145, and 246, bringing Gi-hun's group to about twelve fighters. Noticing the others struggling, Hyun-ju steps forward and instructs the rebels on how to operate the MP5A3, revealing to a questioning 246 that she formerly served as a Sergeant First Class in Korean Special Forces. Gi-hun forces the captured manager to remove his mask, with Jung-bae expressing disbelief at his young age. Smashing through the side door to the bathrooms, the group exits the dorms and proceed into the massive multi-coloured stairwell, where they are attacked by several soldiers from a higher level and pinned down. Hyun-ju rushes forward and manages to kill three soldiers from a vantage point, forcing those remaining to retreat while the players pushed forward, unaware of a larger group waiting to ambush them. They reach the entrance to the complex's management area, where the captured manager states he needs his mask to pass through the security, which he retrieves. As he looks up however, the manager sees Player 001 (Oh Young-il) and appears to recognize him, but is then shot in the head by the ambush group, pinning the players down. The soldiers fire at them from across the towering stairwell gap, killing Player 072 when he fails to reach cover. Gi-hun orders the others to stay behind and buy time while he and Jung-bae head to the control room, which Young-il questions but complies with. The two find a security door that they pass by using the dead manager's mask, leaving a spare MP5 to hold the door open. They are attacked by two soldiers, but manage to kill them by causing a diversion with the manager's mask, looting them of their ammo before moving on. Seeing them advance, the Officer orders a large group of soldiers to defend the control room, which Gi-hun and Jung-bae have almost reached. Back in the stairwell, the other rebelling players are locked in a shootout with the soldiers. 047 manages to kill another guard and advises Dae-ho to not waste his ammo after wildly spraying fire, as he is clearly suffering a PTSD episode and beginning to crack from the intensity of the fighting. 047 suggests to Young-il that they meet up with Gi-hun, as they are getting nowhere being bogged down in a firefight, but Young-il fears they will get surrounded if they move forward with no plan and tells them to hold their ground. 206 is suddenly shot and killed by a soldier flanking the group, but 246 and Hyun-ju manage to kill him and another flanker. The extended gunfight begins to wear down on the players, as they all discover their ammo running dangerously low, while a pinned-down Gi-hun and Jung-bae run into the same problem as they radio Young-il for backup. Gi-hun reminds them that the soldiers they killed in the dorms have extra magazines in their pockets, which Young-il orders someone else to retrieve while he, 047, and 015 push on to reinforce Gi-hun. Hyun-ju prepares to retrieve the magazines, but Dae-ho steps up and volunteers to go instead, being out of ammo anyway. Hyun-ju gives him a loaded MP5 and sends him back after the others cover him, advising him to follow the destroyed cameras. Gi-hun runs out of ammo and bravely runs to a guard's corpse to grab more magazines, narrowly avoiding being gunned down, though he suffers a graze on his arm. Young-il, 047, and 015 arrive to assist, with him suggesting to Gi-hun they attempt to flank the soldiers guarding the control room entrance. Gi-hun agrees and hands him a spare magazine, which Young-il strangely hesitates to take, but does so anyway, leading the others to outflank the guards. Back in the dorms, Dae-ho shakily arrives and starts to gather the dead soldiers' magazines with assistance from Players 149, 222, and 007, managing to gather more than a dozen. As he leaves the dorms however, the distant gunfire from the shootout frightens him, causing him to become unresponsive when Hyun-ju radios him for help. Hearing nothing, Hyun-ju volunteers to run back and grab the magazines, assuming Dae-ho had been killed. Young-il and the others get behind the soldiers near the control and prepare to ambush them, but 047 is suddenly gunned down by Young-il, 015 suffering the same fate but barely alive. Young-il then radios Gi-hun and fakes his own death, using 015's dying noises through the radio to create the ruse, before executing the injured player with a headshot. Revealing his treachery, Young-il changes his radio's channel and orders the guards to start wrapping things up; in reality he is Hwang In-ho, the Front Man, and had entered the games presumably in an effort to stop any rebellion attempts by Gi-hun. In the dorms, Hyun-ju arrives and finds a shell-shocked Dae-ho, who profusely apologizes for abandoning them. Just as she goes to leave, a large group of soldiers arrive to quell any further rebellion, who she prepared to fight off with the new ammo until Player 149 stopped her, knowing she would get herself killed in the effort. The surviving rebelling players in the stairwell ran out of ammunition at the same time, as the soldiers began closing in from both directions to surround them. Injured and left with one bullet, 324 raises his gun to his head and, after protests from 246, kills himself to prevent being captured. 145 then suggested they surrender, but he is shot in the chest after dropping his weapon. 246 is then shot in a non-fatal area by Kang No-eul and asked him to fake his death. Gi-hun surrenders Gi-hun surrendering following the end of his attempted revolt Gi-hun and Jung-bae also ran out of ammo and surrendered at this point, held at gunpoint by soldiers. The Front Man then arrives with the Officer, questioning Gi-hun if he had fun playing the hero, before raising his M1911 to execute him. Just as Gi-hun accepts his fate with a furious gaze, the Front Man tells him to look at the consequences of his rebellion, before turning his gun to Jung-bae. The two friends share one last look, then the Front Man kills him with a shot to the chest, much to Gi-hun's heart-breaking anguish as two soldiers barely restrain him from lunging at his adversary. The rebellion was ultimately a failure, with almost every member of the uprising killed in the ensuing battle with the guards, only Gi-hun, Hyung-ju, and Dae-ho survived, while Young-il technically also survived but was not a true member as it is revealed that he is actually Hwang In-ho, otherwise known as the Front Man, the whole time and was serving as the mole to successfully thwart Gi-hun's plan all along. After the deaths of most of the rebelling players, there are 60 players remaining to carry on the games, which will presumably continue as normal. He was unconsciously placed back in the Dormitory room with the other players to continue playing. Gi-hun regains consciousness and begs the guards to kill him after the failed rebellion. Gi-hun abstains from voting as he was handcuffed for starting the revolt. Gi-hun angrily blames Kang Dae-ho for not bring the ammo magazines back. He enters the fourth game and picks the red ball, revealing himself as a seeker with a knife. After he finds Seon-nyeo, he advances on her, preparing to kill her. However, she begs him to spare her life and instead advises Gi-hun to kill Dae-ho to remove his bad karma; he relents and starts looking for Dae-ho, eventually finding him. As Gi-hun and Dae-ho face each other, they fight over the death of players that voted to stop thinking he caused their death in the Special Game and the failed rebellion. Afterwards, Gi-hun strangles Dae-ho to death, passing the game. After the fourth game, realizing he had killed his own friend, Gi-hun tries to commit suicide by putting his knife on the chin to stab himself, only to be stopped by the soldiers, who shot the knife out of his hands. He was then brought back to the lobby room and was handcuffed once again, abstaining from the vote once again. As the players head for the fifth game, Gi-hun carriesKim Jun-hee's baby as he saw that Kim Jun-hee cannot walk normally due to her broken bone on her left foot during the fourth game. In the Jump Rope game, he begs the manager to help Jun-hee and her baby live as they cannot handle the game but the latter refuses to. Gi-hun protects the baby and bravely & carefully crosses the narrow bridge without being hit by the metal rope. Gi-hun and Jun-hee’s baby managed to cross the bridge, passing the game. The remaining players start crossing the narrow bridge while avoiding being hit by the metal rope but Player 096 attempts to kill the players by blocking their way to split the prize money between Gi-hun while he tries to protect them. Player 096 starts to kill Gi-hun for ruining his plan, but the latter stabbed Player 096 in the right eye with Gi-hun’s nail, threw him off the platform, causing 096 to be hit by the metal rope and fall to his death, allowing the players to cross the end of the bridge. Gi-hun tries to save Jun-hee but she commits an altruistic sacrifice by falling to her death as the fifth game ends. Gi-hun participates in the feast for being one of the 8 (9 including the baby) finalists. He casts his first vote since the conclusion of the third game, once again voting 'X,' only to be outvoted by a majority of the players voting 'O,' thus forcing everyone to participate in the final game. That evening, Gi-hun is summoned to the Front Man's office. There, the Front Man reveals himself as Hwang In-ho, aka Young-il, shocking Gi-hun as he realizes that the mastermind was the very man whom he had bonded with earlier in the games. In-ho gives him a knife, warning him that killing the other players to save himself and the baby would be his best choice. He also gives him his word that if Gi-hun and the baby were the last two players left, the final game would not be able to commence. Heading back to the dorms, Gi-hun approaches Player 100 and prepares to stab him with the knife, but upon remember Kang Sae-byeok's words, spares Player 100's life. The next day, the players are taken to the final game, Sky Squid Game. Gi-hun was immediately in trouble due being in the minority of players still remaining in the game. After Player 125 was killed by Player 333 in the first round, things came to a head at the second round when the other players tried to target him and the baby next. However, Gi-hun warns that if they both are eliminated, the final round would force the group to decide amongst themselves who would be eliminated. The group tries to circumvent this by separating him from the baby and tying their jackets around Player 336 to create a makeshift rope, who was chosen to forcefully separate the baby from Gi-hun. Upon separating the baby, Player 333 was to use the metal rod and push Gi-hun off the platform. However, Gi-hun brings out his knife and cuts the rope, before threatening player 336 at knifepoint. Player 333 yells at Gi-hun to move, and he does so, narrowly avoiding Player 333's charge as he knocks the metal rod into 336, sending 336 off the platform to his death instead. Player 333 declares that he is actually an ally of Gi-hun, before the two of them turn their attentions to the four other players, whose stunned looks turn into terrified ones upon seeing both Gi-hun and 333 armed with weapons. The four remaining players try to negotiate a fair game of chance to decide the final elimination in the final round, but 333 refuses, saying that the majority had the power to betray him and Gi-hun at any moment. Gi-hun is then informed of Player 333's relationship with Jun-hee and the baby, but as he is hesitating to believe him, his attention is turned to player 039, who is being beat-up by 100, 203, and 353. Player 100 proposes that they can bring Player 039 and use him as the final elimination in the final round to allow everyone else to split the prize money equally. Gi-hun refuses, declaring that they will draw a lottery for it, with the baby being excluded. Seeing Gi-hun's refusal to cooperate, causing multiple fights to break out
