Clay is the president of a mining company in Unova who is the Gym Leader of Driftveil City's Gym, known officially as the Driftveil Gym. He specializes in Ground-type Pokémon. He gives the Quake Badge to Trainers who defeat him. Although Clay is shown to be impatient and hotheaded, he is good of heart and cares greatly for his hometown, Driftveil City, and for the Unova region as a whole. He is willing to put aside his role of Gym Leader to protect Driftveil from antagonistic people, specifically Team Plasma. Clay pioneered Driftveil's redevelopment between Black & White and Black & White 2 and founded the Pokémon World Tournament to increase the city's popularity.
