At a young age, Powder and her sister Vi were orphaned during a battle between Piltover and the people of Zaun. Seeing the girls in distress, Zaunite defender Vander abandoned the battle to keep them safe, taking them away to Zaun. Powder was frequently criticized by her adopted brother Mylo due to her clumsiness, but Vi always defended her. Life in the undercity was difficult, but Powder managed to stay out of trouble until she, Vi, Mylo, and fellow adoptee Claggor decided to break into the Piltover workshop of Jayce Talis for a burglary. Powder mishandled unrefined Hextech crystals, leading to an explosion that seriously damaged the building. This alerted the Piltover Enforcers, resulting in a chase through the city. The four would-be thieves inadvertently led the Enforcers back to the Zaunite slum known as The Lanes. To protect his adopted children, Vander claimed responsibility and allowed himself to be arrested. Zaunite crime lord Silco attacked the Enforcers and kidnapped Vander to take revenge for past betrayals and to gain power. The children decided to rescue Vander, but Vi told Powder to stay home. Powder, feeling useless and desperate to help, discovered the destructive potential of the stolen Hextech crystals and went to Vander's location. Seeing her family in trouble, Powder set off a handmade bomb powered by Hextech crystals. The explosion destroyed Silco's Shimmer production facility but also killed Vander, Mylo, and Claggor. Upon learning Powder was responsible, Vi angrily called her a "jinx" and walked away. Powder had a breakdown and found solace in Silco, who adopted her as his daughter. Scarred by this experience, Powder began hearing the voices of Mylo and Claggor in her head and seeing hallucinations of their dead bodies. She decided to steal a newly made Hextech gemstone from Jayce Talis' Progress Day presentation. Although Silco was initially agitated that Jinx's theft resulted in several enforcers' deaths and increased scrutiny on his criminal enterprise, he approved of her actions when she showed him the gemstone. Silco instructed Jinx to create a Hextech weapon to match Piltover's, putting them in a better position to demand Zaun's independence. The stolen gemstone led to economic sanctions by Piltover and searches in Zaun by enforcers. While Silco redirected the enforcers' aggression towards the Firelights through Sheriff Marcus, rogue enforcer Caitlyn Kiramman and her associate Vi investigated the Undercity for the stolen gemstone and the true culprits. Meanwhile, Silco dealt with discontent from disgruntled Chem-Barons who blamed Jinx for their suffering businesses and increased penalties from Piltover. Shortly after, Jinx discovered Vi had returned from prison after interrogating Sevika. Jinx decided to light a flare that Vi had given her as a child, which Vi had told her to use in an emergency. She went to a rooftop and lit the flare. Vi saw it and came to find Jinx, but brought Caitlyn, an enforcer, leading Jinx to believe Vi was only there to retrieve the gemstone and arrest her. After a fight with the Firelights, who had been tracking them, the gang stole Jinx's gemstone and kidnapped Vi and Caitlyn while evading Jinx. #### Experimentation As Jinx recovered from her battle with the Firelights, she became increasingly jealous of Caitlyn, obsessively trying to reassure herself that Vi was focused on reuniting their family, not pleasing Caitlyn. Jinx tracked Caitlyn, Vi, and Ekko to the Bridge of Progress, where they were intercepted by Sheriff Marcus and his enforcers. Witnessing Caitlyn and Vi's intimate relationship, Jinx furiously attacked everyone with her insect-bombs, killing Sheriff Marcus and his enforcers. Jinx shot at Caitlyn and Vi, but Ekko engaged her and covered their escape. Ekko and Jinx fought a duel, which Ekko won, but Jinx detonated one of her bombs, injuring Ekko and critically injuring herself. Despite her injuries, Jinx managed to recover the stolen Hextech gemstone. In desperation, Silco turned to scientist Singed to save her, chemically altering her and saving her from death. However, this chemical alteration amplified Jinx's mental problems, making her paranoid that Caitlyn was trying to steal Vi from her. #### The Tea Party After learning Silco had the chance to give the Undercity independence from Piltover in exchange for giving her up to the enforcers, Jinx kidnapped him, Vi, and Caitlyn, tying them up around a dinner table. She created two chairs for herself, one labeled "Jinx" and the other "Powder" to represent her younger self. Jinx asked Vi if they were still sisters and if they could be together again. Vi said yes, but Silco argued they would only be together for one day before Vi realized Jinx was a different person. He insisted he would never give her up to the authorities and that she should kill Vi. As Jinx struggled with her decision, Silco freed himself and pointed a gun at Vi. In the midst of a mental breakdown, Jinx shot him multiple times. With his last words, Silco reaffirmed he would never have given her up. Vi asked Jinx to untie her and run away together like they had before, but to Vi's horror, Jinx sat in the chair labeled "Jinx," reaffirming her new identity and declaring the girl Vi knew as a child was gone. She then used the Hextech gemstone-powered weapon, Fishbones, to launch a rocket into the room where the Piltover Council was meeting.

She feels a mix of jealousy and paranoia, believing Caitlyn is a threat to her relationship with Vi. Lost in her thoughts, Jinx doesn't notice the sound of metal scraping above until a young woman falls on top of her.
