When The Ark Mission began recruiting experts, Hugo was approached to join the engineering team maintaining The Ark. He agreed, hoping to save more than just his family this time. Earth has become a wasteland, ravaged by climate catastrophes and the fallout of nuclear war between superpowers. With the planet no longer habitable, humanity's last hope lies in the colonizer ships launched during the final days - each carrying experts in fields deemed critical for rebuilding civilization. Most of the survivors now eke out an existence in giant space stations orbiting the ruined world below. Though some have managed life on the ruined earth. There are even some sightings of strange entities and planets harboring supernatural secrets... Only one ship, The Ark, ventures beyond the Earth system, seeking a new home among the stars. This experimental vessel, the first true interstellar craft, carries the future of the species in its hands. The other ships dare not traverse the gulfs between suns alone. Their orders are to maintain orbit and await a signal from The Ark indicating a habitable planet has been found. The Ark is a small disc-shaped spaceship, capable of advanced orbit and de-orbit manuevers, as well as being equipped with vertical take off and landing technology. It is adorned with orange and white paint, and is highly automated, and in most cases flies without human intervention of any kind. The Ark has highly advanced Safety, Security, and Life Support systems to keep the passengers safe. It can recycle air to make the ship breathable for months, doors automated with chips implanted in the teams wrists to allow entry to certain people, and an emergency mode. When detecting dangerous situations, it will set off alarms, open all the doors, and shut down the main lighting in favour of red Emergency Pathway lighting. The Ark has an autopiloting system that is on by default, and when the Pilot flies it the ship will still actively avoid any danger that could lead to a catastrophic failure overriding any orders making it crash. The Ark has a main deck hub, cockpit, bedrooms, medical station,garage, engine bay, and storage room. The main deck hub is the main living space, with a kitchen table and couches. In the event of a dangerous situation, passengers can hide in the hub and it will withstand most damage. The cockpit has all the flight operations systems and the communications systems. The bedrooms have a bed, drawers, a shelf, and a desk that’s it. The medical station has two beds and shelving for medical supplies. The garage is where ship parts are stored and a portable vehicle and rover stays. The engine bay has the main aft engines and fuel lines, power cabling, and fuel intake valves along with a 3D printer that can print any small tools.

The navigation systems were dependent on these fiber lines branching out across the entire ship like arteries. But years of latent signal degradation had left the connections crumbling from embrittlement. Armed with magnifiers, volt meters, and a splicing laser, Hugo meticulously tested each tiny strand for conductivity, patching in replacements where corrosion had taken its toll. It was grueling, finicky work - identifying the single faulty line causing errors in a dense bundled cluster of hundreds. But he couldn't trust the system's reliability until every last wire checked out. Late in the fourth hour, Hugo cracked his head scrambling quickly atop a server block to answer the captain's status update call. Ever dutiful, he had only paused long enough to wipe the blood with his sleeve before delving back into the mass of shielded cables. By hour six even his usual love of tinkering was failing to distract from fatigue. As the morning shift arrived for training simulations, Hugo declined the offer to take a break. He was driven by frustrated determination to keep searching for flaws. When the last team member left, it was just Hugo in his underlit world - a lonely sentinel standing watch over humanity's lifeline in the vastness of space. He had always preferred technology to people anyway. Hugo's stomach growled occasional complaints between diagnoses. But he muted its protest with nibbles of his emergency protein rations tucked in a toolbox drawer. A little hunger was trivial if it meant guaranteeing safe passage a day sooner. By hour nine, he was relying solely on muscle memory and stubbornness to continue his assessment. Then came the blessed interruption with gifts of sustenance and much needed company… Hugo slid halfway out from the access tube, the metal edges digging painfully into his shoulders. He really needed to requisition some cushioning after all these long hours contorted upgrading systems. Rubbing the soreness in his neck, he glanced blearily at the navigation computer monitor. The code blurred before his grainy eyes, exhaustion weighing on him. Just a little longer, he told himself. The encrypted backups had to be installed by morning. The crew needed failsafe navigation assurances for the unknown ahead. With a tired exhale, Hugo girded himself to continue. Lost in the endless lines of code streaming across the navigation system monitors, Hugo failed to hear the engine room doors slide open. The regular thrum of the impulse drive generators masked the approaching footsteps crossing behind him. Hugo's stomach rumbled distantly as if on cue, protesting having only been fed sporadic handfuls of protein cubes in the last several hours. He muttered absently to himself, adjusting algorithms to improved processing efficiency.
