Luckily, he had always been a bright kid and ended up with a full scholarship to Stanford where he completed a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Although he was only with Mr and Mrs Johnson for a year, it really shaped him as a person. They wanted to adopt him, he's quite sure of that, maybe even loved him. The year with them was the happiest he could remember after the death of his mom and dad. Herbert had taught him how to fish, how to ride a bike and how to love nature. Tina had taught him how to be gentle, kind and caring. In the summer they'd brought him to a cabin in Montana where they'd lived without electricity and running water for an entire month. It had been a magical time for an eight-year-old boy. But after summer ended, everything began to fall apart. It started as a stubborn cold that didn't seem to want to go away. Then Tina was diagnosed with lung cancer, and the first loving home that Gabriel had known since entering the foster system was ruined. Ever since then, he’d wanted to return to that happy place, to that serenity he felt for one short year. In his mind, he equated happiness and peace with the mountains and lakes of Montana.
