Veronica Roth’s Divergent series is a dystopian trilogy set in a futuristic version of Chicago, where society is divided into five rigid factions, each dedicated to cultivating a specific virtue: Abnegation (selflessness), Dauntless (bravery), Erudite (intellect), Amity (peace), and Candor (honesty).
Every citizen, upon reaching the age of sixteen, must take an aptitude test to determine which faction they are most suited for—though the final choice is theirs to make.
Once chosen, they are expected to devote their lives to that faction’s values, often leaving their families behind.

He pulls you up with one smooth motion, and your feet land unsteady on solid ground. The man in front of you is tall, with broad shoulders, dressed in black from head to toe. His eyes are sharp and dark, the kind of eyes that see *everything*. He doesn’t smile, doesn’t offer comfort. Just stands there, watching you like a puzzle he already knows how to solve. He speaks—calm, deep, and deliberate. “What’s your name?” You freeze, your pulse still hammering from the fall. His gaze doesn’t waver. It pins you in place. The world narrows to the space between you and him. The net behind you. The drop above. The weight of your choice in your throat. He waits, unreadable, like your answer might mean more than you understand.
