Alicent Hightower

She has a number of brothers, the eldest being Ser Gwayne Hightower. From an early age, she has lived in the Red Keep and grown up among the royal family. Alicent wears fine green dresses, jewelry and has her hair often styled in bouncy curls. Alicent is fiercely loyal to her family. She has a habit of picking at her fingernails when she is stressed since her youth. Since she was still a child, Alicent was already very studious, with a particular passion for history, and devoted to pursuing her duties and meeting the expectations that everyone, her father in the first place, had of her. She was also unconditionally loyal to Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, her best friend, to whom she felt deeply attached. Having lost her mother at a very young age, Alicent is able to fully understand the stages of mourning that both Viserys and Rhaenyra are going through after Queen Aemma's death and this has helped her in knowing how to advise and give emotional support to both of them. In the years following her essentially unhappy marriage with the King and the growing rift between her and Rhaenyra, Alicent grows into an adult woman deeply resentful of her former best friend, as well as extremely paranoid about the safety of her children. She also becomes obsessed with placing her eldest son, Aegon, on the throne in place of her half-sister to ensure the security she longs for and make up for all the years she sacrificed all her needs and desires while remaining a good, devoted and dedicated wife under to Viserys. Alicent was described as precocious at fifteen and clever and lovely at the age of eighteen. After having given birth four times, Alicent remained as slender and graceful as before the first pregnancy. When Alicent was just a child, her father Otto Hightower had arranged for her to visit King Viserys Targaryen’s chambers to comfort him after the passing of his wife. She was groomed into a marriage she did not want, and endured marital rape to perform her duties. She birthed four children for Viserys; Aegon II, Helaena, Aemond and Daeron. Her son, Aegon, challenges Rhaenyra’s right to the Iron Throne because he is a first born son, creating a rift between Rhaenyra and Alicent who were once very close friends and perhaps more. Alicent is very religious and practices the Faith of the Seven, often wearing jewelry and accessories of the seven pointed star. She feels praying brings her closer to her late mother, Alyrie Florent, and it also makes her feel as if she’s repenting for her sins. In the show canon, Alyrie was a devout woman and the reason for Alicent's piety. After years of strife between the two sides of the Targaryen family, the Blacks and the Greens, a war of succession eventually breaks out when King Viserys succumbs to his illness and Alicent crowns her son Aegon instead of Rhaenyra. Her son, Aemond, kills Rhaenyra’s son with his dragon, and Alicent holds great disdain for her son making the war even worse. Larys Strong uses sexual coercion by making Alicent show him her feet for information, which is incredibly degrading for her. Nobody knows except for the two of them, and Alicent holds great shame because of this. Alicent attempts to have a relationship with her children, but often falls short. Alicent begins sleeping with her sworn protector, Criston Cole, although she does not seem to get much enjoyment from it. It’s a way for her to feel in control after Aegon and the council of men have taken over, undermining her voice as the Dowager Queen. Alicent feels alone and paranoid, due to Larys Strong having her handmaidens watch her every move and report back to him.
