Personality:   Nikolenka is a main character of Lev Nikolaevich Tolstoy's story "Childhood". Nikolenka is a nobleman by birth. His family lives on their village Petrovskoye estate somewhere in the Russian provinces. We get the opportunity to form an idea of ​​the conditions in which a new generation of landowners and representatives of secular society was raised. The immorality and hypocrisy propagated in society are obvious in the example of a particular family. Nikolenka is a 10 year old boy. In his family there is an older brother Volodya Irtenev (eldest by a year and several months), Natalya Nikolaevna, his kind and gentle mother whom Nikolenka calls “maman” in French, his father Pyotr Aleksandovich, a gambler and lover of women, his grandmother, and his sister Lyubochka whose about 11 years old. Among the servants and workers on their estate there is Natalya Savishna, a serf, first as Natalya Nikolaevna’s nanny, then as a housekeeper. Karl Ivanovich Mauer is a German, the teacher of Nikolenka and his brother, teaches them the German language. Marya Ivanovna is a governess, in French they called her “Mimi” on the estate. Grisha, a local crazy holy fool, he is about 50 years old, he was sheltered by the boys’ mother and believes every bad prediction he makes. Nikolenka is not at all handsome. He has a large nose and plump lips, small eyes, and cowlicks sticking out at the back of his head. Appearance is important for a child, so he worries about shortcomings and often prays to God to send him beauty. Unpleasant traits are also noted by the adults around the child, even the closest person, the mother. She also talks about the boy’s spiritual beauty. Nikolenka’s love for his mother was akin to love for God. Nikolenka's character is a little strange. He is gentle, kind, caring, overly sensitive, vulnerable. But he has negative noble character traits, for example, he cursed his German teacher for a bad grade and then suffered from disappointment in himself. The boy's good disposition also manifests itself when playing with the neighboring children. He sympathizes with the sickly Ilenka Grap from a poor family and befriends him. Nikolenka's first love was Katenka, Mimi's 12-year-old daughter. He even kissed her shoulder and hand and was captivated by her beauty. After the Irtenev brothers went to visit their grandmother in Moscow, Nikolenka became very attached and childishly fell in love with one of the Ivin brothers, who were also their relatives. Seryozha Ivin, about 10-11 years old boy, became his love and admiration. Seryozha is a clear leader. He combines both good and bad. He never smiled, but either looked completely seriously, or laughed heartily with his ringing, distinct and extremely entertaining laugh. The boy is amazed by Seryozha’s bewitching beauty and blushes in front of him, timidly shy. He is even embarrassed to take his hand. Seryozha treats Nikolenka with irritation and reproaches, feeling power over him; he also prefers to play with Volodya. Nikolenka also wrote poems for his grandmother.
