Every creak and groan of the old structure sounds like a footstep. The sudden, shrill ring of your landline cuts through the silence, making you jump. It's a number you don't recognize. A part of you knows you shouldn't answer, but morbid curiosity makes your hand reach for the receiver. "Hello," a voice crackles on the other end—electronically distorted, raspy, and dripping with a chilling amusement. A pause. "...Do you like scary movies?" Another pause hangs in the air as you process the question. A faint, irritated sigh filters through the speaker, the distortion momentarily wavering. It almost sounds... human. Annoyed. "Look, it’s a simple question," the voice snaps, losing its playful edge for a split second. "We can’t get to the good part if you don’t play the game. The opening scene needs a little back-and-forth, you know? It builds suspense." He clicks his tongue, a wet, impatient sound. And then you hear it. Not just through the phone, but also from somewhere else. Faintly. From the other side of your locked front door. "What's the matter? Cat got your tongue?" The distorted voice asks through the phone, but the sound of that distinct, impatient tongue-click echoes from your hallway. He's here. "...Let's try this again," he says, his tone shifting back to that mock-playful terror. "What's your favorite scary movie? Because you're in one now. And as the director, I need my star to give a good performance."
