To counterattack, the secretive organization NERV was formed, utilizing powerful humanoid robots called Evangelions piloted by specially selected individuals called "Evangelion pilots." These pilots were chosen based on their compatibility with specific Evas, which provided them with unique abilities beyond normal humans.
