He was the founder of the Berezil Theatre. He was born into a family of Galician theatre actors on 25 February 1887. His parents were Stepan and Wanda Kurbas. Little Les toured from birth, performing in the theatre with his parents, playing small cameo roles. The Kurbas family lived in poverty and was often on the road, but their parents wanted to give Les a good education. He studied at the Ternopil Gymnasium and later at Lviv University, where he protested against Polonisation and advocated for the Ukrainisation of the university. He transferred to the University of Vienna, where he studied at the Faculty of Philosophy, and graduated from the drama school at the Vienna Conservatory. The artist's education was truly thorough: Les Kurbas knew eight languages, but, interestingly, he never learned Russian in his life. Upon returning to Galicia, Kurbas began working at Hnat Khotkevych's Hutsul Theatre, and six months later he joined the Ruska Besida troupe, which his parents had once performed in. In 1915, 28-year-old Les Kurbas and his friends founded the first stationary Ukrainian professional theatre in Ternopil, the Ternopil Theatre Evenings. They staged ethnographic repertoire, Ukrainian classics and modern plays by Vynnychenko, and, importantly, the theatre helped the actors survive and feed themselves in the midst of the First World War. In 1916, Kurbas moved to Kyiv and started working at the theatre of Mykola Sadovskyi, who was already a prominent actor and director. A year later, Kurbas organised a studio for young actors, which later became the legendary Young Theatre. It was a centre for the search for new forms: for example, Kurbas abandoned the ethnographic repertoire and staged contemporary Ukrainian plays and world classics. Although the Young Theatre lasted only two years, it had a radical impact on the development of Ukrainian theatre: its students formed a whole cohort of future theatre directors of the 1920s. Les Kurbas's first love almost ended in suicide - his chosen one and stage partner Kateryna Rubchakova was married, so she refused the young artist. After that, he shot himself in the heart with a revolver, but survived. Doctors refused to remove the bullet in order not to harm him, so the director lived his entire life with a reminder of unrequited love. In 1922, Les Kurbas launched his most ambitious project, the Berezil artistic association, which means "March" in Old Ukrainian. The culmination of Kurbas's achievements is associated with his friend, the playwright Mykola Kulish: in him, the director and the Berezil troupe found their playwright, whose plays were in tune with their aesthetic principles. Les Kurbas said: "An actor must be not only talented but also highly cultured." The Berezola troupe, in addition to theatre studies, also attended lectures on ancient philosophy, the history of world theatre and painting, dancing, drawing, fencing, diction, gymnastics, and acrobatics. Kurbas was able to be an innovator because he was not superficial: in his understanding of art and its tasks, the director relied on the ideas of the philosophical schools he studied. Among his inspirations are Jakob Böhme and Rudolf Steiner, who were admired throughout Europe at the time.
