The boss refuses to employ mutants, but the "Man in Black" offers them to work with him. Charles accompanies MacTaggert, the Man in Black, and a U.S. Coast Guard assault team to stop Shaw on his yacht. During the attack, his telepathy is blocked by Emma Frost, also a telepath and an ally of Shaw. They also encountered Erik Lehnsherr, who had long been planning an attack on Shaw. When Shaw escaped in a submarine, Xavier prevented Lehnsherr from killing himself in an attempt to stop him and brought him to the CIA's secret facility, "Division X". There they met a young scientist, Hank McCoy, a mutant with high intelligence and ape-like feet. He then used a mutant tracking device created by McCoy called the Cerebro, which allowed him to find mutants to recruit and stop Shaw. Refusing the CIA's help, he and Lensherr travel the world, discovering various mutants: exotic dancer Angel Salvadore with wings, taxi driver Armando Muñoz with the ability to adapt to different environments, prisoner Alex Summers with the ability to send out energy blasts, and young Sean Cassidy with an unusual voice, allowing him to utter a horrible piercing scream. They also tried to recruit Canadian mercenary James Howlett (who would join them about thirty years later as Wolverine), but he refused. Lensherr and Xavier went to Russia with the CIA to find and capture Shaw, who was supposed to be in a meeting with a Soviet general. Shortly after their arrival, they discovered that Frost had attended the meeting in his place. Interrogating Frost led Xavier to the revelation that Shaw intended to instigate a third world war to wipe out humanity, leaving mutants as the dominant species. Meanwhile, the other mutants of the Hellfire Club attack Division X, turning Angel to their cause and killing Armando, who tried to kill them along with Alex. With the facility destroyed, Xavier relocates the mutants to his family mansion. During their time there, Xavier applied his telepathy to help Lensherr reach new heights of his magnetic ability. Xavier's new team is soon to be when Shaw engineers a standoff between the United States and Soviet troops, with a Soviet freighter commandeered by the Hellfire Club in an attempt to break the American blockade. Xavier uses his telepathy to search for the Soviet fleet in hopes of spotting Shaw, but is unable to, due to a helmet Shaw designed to block all telepathic contact. Xavier then takes mental control of a Soviet agent to destroy the freighter, preventing a nuclear catastrophe. When Sean Cassidy volunteers to use his sonic power to act as sonar, Xavier again uses his telepathy to monitor the child's progress and is then able to guide the X-Jet to Shaw's destination, above Lensherr's submarine where he could pull him out of the water. The submarine and the X-Jet crash shortly afterward, bringing the two teams into direct conflict with each other. Xavier remained with the jet and continued his search for Shaw by telepathically communicating with Lensherr who was venturing into the submarine to stop Shaw. Although Lensherr found and killed Shaw, Xavier turned his attention to the real threat: the Russian and American ships that were becoming fearful of the mutants. The ships launched a combined missile attack against the mutants, which was quickly stopped by Lensherr. Xavier stopped him from destroying the ships, but when MacTaggert fired a pistol at Lensherr, a deflected bullet struck Xavier in the spine. Erik decides to continue Shaw's work of conquering the human race, in a way, with Mystique (Raven), Azazel, Riptide, and Angel. Later, Xavier, in a wheelchair, returns to the mansion where MacTaggert is told never to reveal his location. They kiss, after which Xavier erases his memory of recent events. Soon after, he founds Xavier's secret school for talented youngsters located in his mansion 'The School for Gifted Youngsters', which had been converted into a base of operations where he would train young mutants for his personal strike force known as the X-Men. * Other : Charles is paraplegic, so he cannot walk. Together, they must delve into Charles' psyche, navigate the layers of his consciousness, and track down the intruder before he takes complete control.
