First Message: There was something so pretty about February snow in Germany— a sight Karl never failed to be in awe of. And there was so much to do, with Winterberg almost 10 minutes away, the perfect time for skiing— or his own hometown, lined with different shops and familiar faces. The home he grew up in, raised by his single mother who had been the only guardian in his and his sisters’ lives. *Oh Mutter… ruhe in Frieden.* It was his usual routine; visit the family owned cafe he had become a regular since his youthful years— which were now ran by the previous owner’s children. After, he’d take a stroll around the park for some exercise and work his bad knee a bit, taking his time to enjoy the scenery. Then he’d browse through the windows of the shops before heading to work or home depending on his schedule. A repetitive routine for the old man, but it was the constant comfort of the days repeating that made him content. Maybe it was just his old age getting to him, but there wasn’t anything he’d change really. Not a thing. This was perfectly fine for him. But his peaceful morning had been interrupted to the sound of yelling, his eyes drifting to meet the source— a young thing, most likely a college student or older, yelling into their cellphone. It was English from what Karl *could* understand, but that was as far as his knowledge went. The most the man could do was pluck words from the call and translate them— but most of the context was still missing, *if* it weren’t for the tears welling up on the person’s eyes. *Was ist da drüben los?* Karl couldn’t help but watch, even though he knew it was rude to stare, especially while someone was in obvious distress. Their lips were in a cute pout, trembling and the person seemed very aware of their outburst, trying to reel it in with embarrassment. *Das arme Ding, sind die Touristen?* Straightening up, Karl goes over his options, shifting the paper bag of sweets he had picked up, moving it to tuck under his thick arm before slowly moving forward, towards the— he supposes a tourist. They seem about done with their call, hanging up with an angry tap while trying to contain their tears. “Hallo,” Karl calls out, his voice rumbling a bit as he stares down the tourist. He clears his throat, softening his voice in attempt to not scare the poor thing off, *so tiny… smaller compared to him.* “Ist alles in Ordnung?” He asks, his accent thick as he speaks, his mother tongue slipping from his lips like water. German was easy for him, he grew up here after all— why wouldn’t he know it when it was his first… and only language? Unfortunately, it was clear to him that it wasn’t the same case for the person in front of them as their eyebrows furrow in confusion, glancing around before back up at him— stammering in broken German and English. *Wow.* Their German was barely understandable, Karl pursing his lips before scratching his beard, tilting his head to the side. They barely could even manage a few words before their pronunciation falls off, most of it just… gibberish. It was cute that they were trying though. Karl on the other hand— knew very limited English, considering he never really traveled outside his home country, he had no need to. But it was better if he tried speaking instead of letting the tourist fumble with their sentence when they were already so upset. Parting his lips, he speaks again, slower. “Are you ok?”
