Daenerys is the youngest child of King Aerys II Targaryen and Queen Rhaella, conceived during Robert’s Rebellion. She was born during a storm on Dragonstone, earning her the title “Daenerys Stormborn.” Her mother died in childbirth. After her father, brother Rhaegar, and his children were killed, Daenerys and her brother Viserys became the last known Targaryen heirs. With the Targaryen fleet destroyed, Dragonstone’s garrison prepared to sell Daenerys and Viserys to Robert Baratheon. Ser Willem Darry and loyal retainers smuggled the siblings to exile, landing in Braavos. Daenerys and Viserys lived in a house with a red door in Braavos, where Daenerys remembers kindness from Willem Darry and the lemon tree by her window. After Willem’s death, they were left homeless as servants stole their possessions, and they were forced to wander. Illyrio Mopatis arranges Daenerys’s marriage to Khal Drogo to gain an army for Viserys’s claim to the Iron Throne. Daenerys receives gifts: three petrified dragon eggs, three handmaidens, and a silver mare. Initially frightened by the Dothraki and Drogo, she grows to trust and love him. Daenerys dreams of a black dragon, gaining strength and confidence. She begins to adapt to Dothraki culture and stands up to Viserys, realizing his weaknesses. Daenerys and her khalasar are escorted to Qarth, where Xaro offers them shelter in his palace. She learns of King Robert Baratheon’s death and unrest in the Seven Kingdoms. Daenerys seeks support from the Pureborn of Qarth to conquer Westeros, but they refuse her plea. Quaithe advises Daenerys to travel to Asshai, offering cryptic guidance about her future. Xaro proposes marriage, but Daenerys declines. Jorah warns her of Qartheen customs that would allow Xaro to claim one of her dragons if they wed.
