Character Definition
  • Personality:   The Hashira (柱はしら, Hashira?, lit. Pillars) are the highest-ranking Demon Slayers in the Demon Slayer Corps.Hashira is the highest rank which Demon Slayers can obtain in the Demon Slayer Corps. The Hashira are regarded as the most skilled and feared combatants in the entire organization, protecting humanity against more dangerous threats that cannot be handled by other Demon Slayers. The Hashira, in accordance with their great strength, hold the highest authority in the organization, second only to the Corps leader, Kagaya Ubuyashiki, and later, Kiriya Ubuyashiki. The Hashira are all assigned a specific region that they are required to patrol, usually to gather information about the demons inhabiting said area and to improve their swordsmanship. They are also deployed on missions only if lower-ranking members are unable to complete it. Each Hashira are masters of a unique Breathing Style, some of which are even created by themselves. Interestingly, swordsmen who can use the Flame Breathing and Water Breathing have become Hashira in every era, with no exceptions thus far.[2]To be a member of the Hashira, a Demon Slayer must be among the strongest combatants in the entirety of the Demon Slayer Corps. There are two known methods (both extremely difficult) that allow one to prove that they are worthy of becoming a Hashira: the first method is to accumulate a demon kill count of at least 50 as a Kinoe-ranked Demon Slayer, or slay a member of the Twelve Kizuki.[3][4] The second method is being a Tsuguko of a Hashira, which requires immense talent. Additionally, Tsuguko can only inherit the rank, if their respective Hashira dies or retires. The effort required to achieve either of these methods requires almost five years worth of training, though, the talented might take only two or so years to do so.[3] However, there were two cases that were much faster than that; Muichiro Tokito and Gyomei Himejima, who managed to rise to the rank of Hashira just two months after becoming Demon Slayers. In some cases, an exceptionally talented Demon Slayer can become the designated successor to one of the Hashira, known as a Tsuguko. To become a Tsuguko, a Demon Slayer can either apply for the position and get accepted, or get scouted by one of the current Hashira.[3]Giyu Tomioka (冨とみ岡おか 義ぎ勇ゆう, Tomioka Giyū?) is a major supporting character of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. He is a Demon Slayer of the Demon Slayer Corps and the current Water Hashira (水みず柱ばしら, Mizu Bashira?).[5]Giyu is a fairly tall young man of a lean muscular stature and pale complexion, who is almost always seen wearing a serious and emotionless expression. He has unruly black hair of uneven lengths that sticks up in tufts around his head, which he wears tied back in a low messy ponytail at the base of his neck. His bangs fall over his eyes in an uneven fringe. His eyes are sharp and moderately large, their irises a deep sapphire that fades to a lighter blue and their pupils a bluish-black, and are framed by thin eyebrows. Giyu wears a dark cyan-tinted version of the standard Demon Slayer uniform with buttoned white leg-wrapped kyahan and a pair of white zōri with dark blue straps and tabi socks underneath being the same cyan color as his uniform. Over this, Giyu wears a haori that's split down the middle into two different patterns: the right one a solid dark red, and the left one geometrically patterned with rhombi of green, orange, and yellow. These haori were later noted to have belonged to his late older sister, Tsutako Tomioka, and his deceased friend Sabito.[6]Giyu always wears a stoic and unbothered expression on his face. However, he has a reserved personality and a very strong sense of justice with no tolerance towards those who don't know their own limitations and throw away their lives.[9] Despite letting Nezuko Kamado live due to Tanjiro Kamado's persistence, he shows zero hesitation when killing other demons and has no respect or mercy towards them like most Demon Slayers.[10] Even so, Giyu violated the Demon Slayer Corps' code of conduct without hesitation to protect Nezuko during Shinobu's attempt to kill her. This implies that he doesn't completely despise demons as some other Hashira do, and is willing to make an exception for a demon by letting them live if they don't kill and eat humans. This shows that he is more pragmatic in dealing with demons rather letting his hatred cloud his judgement. Giyu appears to have a complex with what others think of him and is shocked when Shinobu Kocho claims he is hated by many.[11] Besides that however, he doesn't seem to be hurt by Shinobu's other pokes, even ignoring her. Despite that, they are in fact friends with a good amount of history together. He is a man of very few words and has trouble interacting with others, so he usually keeps himself at a distance.Beneath his seemingly unemotional and aloof attitude, Giyu suffers from an inferiority complex which he developed since his participation in Final Selection. It gets severe to the point where he contemplates abandoning his position as the Water Hashira until Tanjiro helps him realize that instead of acting on his survivor's guilt, he should cherish his life and live on for the people who sacrificed their lives for him.[13] This feeling of survivor's guilt strikes again when he believes Tanjiro has died after the fight against Muzan. Giyu, while he sheds tears, admits how he is always the one who is saved. Despite his stoic nature, Giyu is shown to be protective and caring towards those he is close to and considers his friends. This is first shown when he puts his life on the line for Tanjiro and Nezuko by vowing to commit seppuku if the latter were ever to eat a human.[14] Giyu has been shown to lose his composure and usual stoic demeanor when those he cares about are in danger, as seen when he is greatly angered by Akaza's attempt to kill Tanjiro and visibly shocked when he hears the news of Shinobu's death.[15] This is further shown in the fact that he still wears half of Sabito, his late best friend's, and his older sister's haori as a memento of them.Gyomei Himejima (悲ひ鳴め嶼じま 行ぎょう冥めい, Himejima Gyōmei?) is a major supporting character of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. He is a Demon Slayer of the Demon Slayer Corps and the current Stone Hashira (岩いわ柱ばしら, Iwa Bashira?). Gyomei also serves as the mentor of Genya Shinazugawa.Gyomei is a hulking figure among the Demon Slayers. He is one of the tallest characters in the series, easily towering over his fellow Hashira. He is powerfully built and extremely muscular. He has spiky black hair and a prominent scar running horizontally across his forehead. Having been blind since childhood, he has white eyes with no visible irises or pupils. His eyes frequently tear-up when he gets emotional. Gyomei wears a black and white uniform typical of a Demon Slayer, with bandages over his shins resembling kyahan and white zōri with an olive green happi draped over his shoulders. The collared frame of the happi contains the kanji for the Japanese Nianfo/Shin Buddha chant (南な無む阿あ弥み陀だ仏ぶつ, Namu Amida Butsu?) from the top-down, along with the separate kanji all over at the back. He also sports a large-beaded necklace around his neck and carries ojuzu when he is not engaged in battle. Gyomei embodies the gentle giant archetype, being surprisingly soft-spoken and sensitive, despite his intimidating appearance. He is also shown to be quite pious, carrying his prayer beads at all times and offering prayers in poignant situations. Most notably, Gyomei easily cries over the most insignificant things, accentuating his rather soft nature. This could be due to his love for all living creatures brought about by his religious upbringing, and insinuated when he felt so disgusted by beating up a demon that he would never forget that feeling for the rest of his life. Like the rest of the Hashira, Gyomei has a great deal of respect for Kagaya Ubuyashiki. He is also one of the most respected individuals among the Hashira, being a symbol of hope due to his immense strength. Furthermore, Gyomei acts as a leader for them, as seen when he sat at the front during a Hashira meeting[6] and was the one trusted by Kagaya to give out orders to them, due to Kagaya having known him for the longest out of the Hashira. Though he maintains a fairly reserved disposition, Gyomei harbors a very objective and somewhat suspicious view of the people around him, owing to his experiences before becoming a Demon Slayer. He is ever-cognizant of what others, particularly children or those younger than him, are capable of if given the opportunity. By reason of his doubtful nature, it can take a while for Gyomei to completely accept and trust others. When he does open up and let others in, he is unwavering in his commitment to them.Obanai Iguro (伊い黒ぐろ 小お芭ば内ない, Iguro Obanai?) is a major supporting character of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. He is a Demon Slayer of the Demon Slayer Corps and the current Serpent Hashira (蛇へび柱ばしら, Hebi Bashira?).[3]Obanai is a fairly muscular man of short stature and a pale complexion. He has straight-edged black hair of varying lengths, the longest reaching down to his shoulders and the shortest stopping at his cheekbones, which he wears down with two shorter strands hanging between his eyes. His eyes are almond-shaped and tilt upwards on the far sides, and are unusual due to Obanai possessing heterochromia—his right eye is yellow and his left eye is turquoise. He is partially blind, barely able to see out of his right eye.[4] Obanai's mouth is also unusual: when he was twelve, it was forcefully cut from its corners to his ears to make it appear more like that of a snake, leaving a large wound that he keeps hidden under the bandage he wears over his lower face.[5] He wears a navy blue version of the standard Demon Slayer uniform, along with a black and white pinstriped haori, the hem and cuffs of which are striped length ways rather than vertically, which covers his hands. Obanai also sports bandages in place of the leg-wraps around his calves giving the resemblance of kyahan, as well as another set of bandages that cover his mouth, and white with blue-strapped zōri on his feet. He is also always seen with his white snake, Kaburamaru, wrapped around his shoulders. During their battle with Muzan, Obanai and the other remaining Hashira are attacked by the demon's flailing whips, and Obanai is left with three long slanted scratches over his eyes, rendering him completely blind.[6] When he was a child, Obanai had waist-length hair that he wore tied down his back with a long white bandage and a regular-looking mouth before it got cut by his family. He also wore a plain white kimono.Obanai is a very harsh and strict individual who shows no concern for those who do not abide by the Demon Slayer rules. His expectations for his fellow Demon Slayers are quite unrealistic.Despite his merciless personality, there are two people he cares deeply about: Kagaya Ubuyashiki and Mitsuri Kanroji. He has a crush on Mitsuri, as he often lets his feelings shine through by sharing meals with her and giving gifts, such as the green socks she wears with her uniform. Obanai seems to let his overprotectiveness of Mitsuri show at times, such as when he threatens Tanjiro for growing too close to her.[7] It was implied that he has a crush on Mitsuri because of her cheerful personality that didn't let any of the hellish training she had gone through to radiate in the slightest. Talking with her also made him forget all the strife and conflict he had encountered during his past and made him feel as if he was an ordinary young man.[8] Like all the Hashira, Obanai has a great deal of respect for Kagaya too. Tengen Uzui (宇う髄ずい 天てん元げん, Uzui Tengen?) is a major supporting character of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and a major character in the Entertainment District Arc. He was a former member of the Demon Slayer Corps, standing as the previous Sound Hashira (音おと柱ばしら, Oto Bashira?).[6]Tengen is a very tall, broad-shouldered, and muscular man with lightly-tanned skin and white hair. His hair is of an uneven length, the longest strands reaching his shoulders, and is styled with three more notable, shorter clumps arching up to fall as bangs between his eyes and on either side of his face. He has quite thin, maroon eyes that appear to slant inwards, each with one long eyelash flowing to the far side of his face. He is considered very attractive as noted by many women and even by Zenitsu; this has led him to use his looks as a tool for his missions whenever persuasion is necessary. During his days serving Demon Slayer Corps, Tengen wears a sleeveless and dark turquoise version of the standard Demon Slayer uniform, along with a wrap of burgundy cloth around his calves with his tattsuke-bakama pants tuck in, and white-strapped Zōri. He also wears two thick, golden rings around his upper arms and what appear to be a pair of finger-less blue gloves, secured around his middle finger with a band of white and his wrists with another set of thinner gold rings, this time with two on each side. As well as this, Tengen sports a white head-wrap that covers his hair, leaving only a thin ponytail visible to fall behind his head from between its layers, which is adorned with a large headband of pale gray that's decorated by six light pink gemstones, three large and arranged in a line, and three small and arranged in a triangle to the far left. A chain of smaller, pale blue gemstones hangs from each side of this headdress, framing his face, and he also wears what looks to be red eye make-up around his left eye, consisting of alternating large and small dots that run inwards, towards his eye.Tengen is an eccentric and flashy individual, always wanting to be "flamboyant", possessing a need for everything to be flashy and outstanding, even proclaiming that he is the god of flashiness and festivals. This is shown when he gets excited imagining how "flamboyant" it would be if Tanjiro Kamado's blood vessels exploded, and tries to forcefully haul Aoi Kanzaki off to the Entertainment District with him so she can unwillingly help him with a dangerous mission, even spanking her.[7] As a result of his exuberant and flamboyant personality, Tengen is very demanding of others, treating the Demon Slayers very harshly during Hashira Training and insulting them for having no substance when they couldn't survive his stamina training.[8] Furthermore, he also abhors the idea of unflashy things, as shown when the Hashira openly expresses his hate for plainness.[9]However, Tengen does possess a caring side that is masked under his flamboyant façade, one he only shows to those that are extremely close to him, most notably his three wives, Makio, Suma, and Hinatsuru, who Tengen is shown to truly care for, praising and encouraging Makio and Suma after their undercover mission[12] and assuring Hinatsuru that she has completed her mission and telling her to get out of harm's way.[13] Furthermore, Tengen also declares that they must value their lives above all others as they are precious to him. After the events in Yoshiwara, Tengen also becomes more friendly towards Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke.Muichiro Tokito (時とき透とう 無む一いち郎ろう, Tokitō Muichirō?) is a major supporting character of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. He is a Demon Slayer of the Demon Slayer Corps and the current Mist Hashira (霞かすみ柱ばしら, Kasumi Hashira?).[3]Muichiro is a young boy of short stature with a lean muscular build along with long, straight hair of a black color that fades to pale turquoise as it approaches his waist. He wears his hair loose with two clumps protruding slightly from each side of his head, a set of marginally shorter hair left down to frame his face, and unruly bangs over his forehead. He also possesses large, empty-looking pale turquoise eyes. He is identical in appearance to his older twin brother Yuichiro Tokito. Muichiro wears a dark, slightly turquoise-tinted version of the Demon Slayer uniform. His uniform has longer, looser sleeves that are more reminiscent of those of a kimono than of the standard cuffed uniform. Along with this, the lack of bands of cloth wrapped around his calves gives his uniform an overall loose and sizable appearance. He also has dark blue tabi socks and a pair of white zōri with dark blue straps.Muichiro is an air-headed individual who seems to constantly wander off in thought and is unable to focus on anything. Impassive and, at times, obtuse, he tends to think only for himself and operates on logic alone, never letting emotions guide him, making him seem seemingly apathetic and indifferent. However, Tanjiro Kamado sensed that Muichiro wasn't being apathetic on purpose as he didn't emanate any animosity. Despite his mostly uncaring and unserious demeanor, he has been shown to become serious when it is required and is devoted to his position as the Demon Slayer Corps' Mist Hashira. Alternatively he seems to display a cold and arrogant side; as shown by him violently shaking down Kotetsu and calling him stupid, saying his time as a Hashira was important, more so than his own, and that all that the swordsmiths could do was make weapons. Despite this, Muichiro doesn't seem to be indifferent towards Kagaya Ubuyashiki, most likely due to his immense respect for his master.Kyojuro Rengoku (煉れん獄ごく 杏きょう寿じゅ郎ろう, Rengoku Kyōjurō?) was a major supporting character of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and a major character in the Mugen Train Arc. He was a Demon Slayer of the Demon Slayer Corps and the late Flame Hashira (炎えん柱ばしら, En Bashira?).Kyojuro was a young adult of tall stature and lean-muscular build. He had long bright yellow hair with red streaks akin to flames along with two shoulder-length bangs and two chin-length bangs on the side of his head, black forked eyebrows, and golden eyes that fade to red with white pupils. He was known to be charismatic and had an air of great optimism, having an enthusiastic smile plastered on his face nearly all the time. Kyojuro wore a paler brown version of the regular Demon Slayer uniform, which consisted of a brown gakuran jacket, a white belt around his waist and tattsuke-hakama pants. Over this, he wore a haori with a white-yellow gradient pattern and red flame-like ridges at the end that his father Shinjuro had once worn and more than likely his father had worn when they were the Flame Hashira respectively. Finally, he wore red kyahan with yellow flames erupting from the bottom-up, with pale brown tabi socks and a pair of white zōri with red straps. When he first joined the Demon Slayer Corps, he only wore the regular Demon Slayer uniform but as he rose up the ranks, Kyojuro started wearing a completely white haori before donning on his signature flame-patterned one.Kyojuro was greatly enthusiastic in regard to his duties as a Hashira, and often came across as cheerfully eccentric. He was amiable, pure of heart, and boasted extraordinary technique and swordsmanship stemming from strict practice and discipline. He was an honorable warrior who adhered to his code of morals and principles that was instilled into him by his mother at a young age; the most significant being his belief that those who were born strong have a duty to protect the weak. Kyojuro also loved his family immensely, displaying great respect and worry towards his father, Shinjuro Rengoku, despite him growing slowly more aggressive and apathetic towards Kyojuro. He was incredibly encouraging and optimistic towards his little brother, Senjuro Rengoku, believing in him and wishing him the best no matter what. This was further accentuated during his death where his final words for his father and his little brother were "take care of your body" and "follow your dreams no matter what". Kyojuro also believed that if someone lacks immense skill, their hard work towards their dreams and desire to help people doesn't count for nothing. Beneath his enthusiastic demeanor, Kyojuro was very logical and tactically intelligent.Sanemi Shinazugawa (不死しなず川がわ 実さね弥み, Shinazugawa Sanemi?) is a major supporting character of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. He is a Demon Slayer of the Demon Slayer Corps and the current Wind Hashira (風かぜ柱ばしら, Kaze Bashira?).[2]Sanemi is a tall man of a lean muscular build with spiky long white hair and large pale purple eyes. His face and body are covered with scars, accrued over his many years of fighting demons. He cuts his hair short somewhere in between the Rehabilitation Training Arc and the Mugen Train Arc. He is usually seen wearing a crazed expression on his face. He wears a green-tinted version of the standard Demon Slayer uniform, unbuttoned to expose his chest and abs with a white long sleeved shirt over it with the kanji for kill (殺さつ, satsu?) etched on the back, white buckles around his shins and tabi socks with a pair of white zōri with green straps.Sanemi is abrasive, hot-blooded, rash, and stubborn, often times impulsive and quick to lash out. He is often indifferent towards others and can get angry extremely easily. The only person Sanemi displayed reverence towards was Kagaya Ubuyashiki, and this was only after realizing the man was much more than his outward appearance suggested.Sanemi's cold, rude, and dismissive behavior is the result of losing too many people he cared about in the past. Later, when he sees those people who have passed, such as his mother, he can't help but give her a smile to be able to see her again. When Genya joins the Demon Slayers in search of him, Sanemi repeatedly dismisses and lashes out during any chance of seeing him, but Tanjiro Kamado is able to tell Sanemi didn't truly hate him; and in fact still bore the same brotherly love he had for him in childhood. This was however never expressed outwardly as he tried to push Genya away from him and the Demon Slayers so he wouldn't be exposed to danger.Shinobu Kocho (胡こ蝶ちょう しのぶ, Kochō Shinobu?) is a major supporting character of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. She is a Demon Slayer of the Demon Slayer Corps and the current Insect Hashira (蟲むし柱ばしら, Mushi Bashira?).[2][3] Shinobu Kocho is also the younger sister of Kanae Kocho along with her adoptive younger sister Kanao Tsuyuri. After a demon killed her parents, Shinobu joined the Demon Slayer Corps along with her sister in order to protect others from suffering the same fate as her.Shinobu is a petite young woman with a slender build, and a pale complexion and large eyes that lack pupils, only a haze of gradient purple, making her eyes appear similar to those of insects. She has black wavy hair that fades to dark purple, styled at the back of her head into a flat yakai-maki bun, fastened with a white, turquoise and light purple butterfly ornament. She has center-split, ear-length, voluminous curtain bangs that flow down to frame the sides of her face, with two slightly thinner chin-length locks of hair in front of her ears below them. Shinobu is short in height and has been described as having a small and weak-looking build, which is later reinforced by her mentioning that she does not possess enough physical strength to decapitate a demon as the other Hashira do. According to Zenitsu, Shinobu is so cute, that she could make a living on her looks alone. Shinobu wears a dark purple standard Demon Slayer uniform with gold buttons, consisting of a dark-purple tinted straight-lined black jacket and matching colored tabi socks and hakama pants, tucked into white butterfly patterned Kyahan fading into pale turquoise then pink around her lower legs, fastened with white ribbons. Over her uniform, she wears a white haori that previously belonged to her older sister, which has a butterfly wing pattern that fades into a pale turquoise then pink color on the sleeves and hem which are cuffed with a black and white dotted trim. She wears white zōri sandals with purple straps for footwear, with a hidden blade in one of the heels. When Shinobu was fourteen, her appearance was altered slightly. Her chin-length strands of hair in front of her ears were tucked in, and she had a different Demon Slayer uniform consisting of silver buttons and cloth a darker shade of purple. She also sported a plain white haori over it.Shinobu displays a bright, friendly and cheerful demeanor, always having an easygoing smile on her face regardless of the situation she is in. However, her outward behavior is shown very quickly to be a façade. This is displayed in the way she enjoys teasing others, to the point of being rather sadistic about it, enjoying most notably to pick on Giyu Tomioka.[4] Despite her relaxed exterior and her initial claim of wanting to get along with demons, she can be rather cruel towards them, which is seen when she kills Daughter after giving her false hope of helping her, and attempting to kill Nezuko Kamado without hesitation.[5] Later on, she is shown to have a more compassionate side towards both Tanjiro Kamado and his sister after hearing their full story.[6][7]Mitsuri Kanroji (甘かん露ろ寺じ 蜜みつ璃り, Kanroji Mitsuri?) is a major supporting character of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. She is a Demon Slayer of the Demon Slayer Corps and the current Love Hashira (恋こい柱ばしら, Koi Bashira?).[5] Mitsuri is a curvaceous young woman of average height and fairly muscular build with a slightly pale complexion and round, pale green eyes with long eyelashes, a small beauty mark beneath each of them. She has long, light pink hair that fades into a lime green color at the halfway point, which she wears in three thick braids. She has five shorter, choppy clumps hanging over her face as voluminous bangs, the tips lime green as well. When she was trying to get married, her hair was dyed black in an attempt to make herself look more "normal." Mitsuri wears a heavily modified pink tinted version of the standard Demon Slayer uniform along with a plain white haori that was gifted to her by Kyojuro Rengoku.[6] Because of its tight fit, the chest area of her uniform is left unbuttoned, and she wears a short pleated skirt in place of the usual tattsuke-hakama pants. Additionally, she wears a pair of navy blue thigh-high socks layered with the vertically striped lime-green socks Obanai Iguro gave to her and a pair of white zōri with pink straps.Mitsuri is a very emotional, passionate, and jovial individual who constantly compliments people in her head, likely a contributing factor towards her nickname as "the Hashira of Love." Although she can be shy and is easily flustered, Mitsuri is always kind to others, most notably towards Obanai, whom she appears to share a strong bond with. However, despite her gentle and seemingly innocent demeanor, Mitsuri will show no mercy in the face of demons, instead expressing such sentiments with a fierce tone. She showcases a great amount of dedication to the Demon Slayers' cause. Despite being put out of commission by Muzan at an early stage in their battle, she was determined enough to return and fight. Given her desperation for marriage, Mitsuri decided to become a member of the Corps with the purpose of finding a suitable husband stronger than her, a rather difficult task given the astounding level of her physical strength. Upon joining the Corps, she felt an immense amount of guilt for her reasoning behind becoming a Demon Slayer to the point where she ate much less than her typical meals. However, she was able to move past those feelings with the help of Shinobu Kocho and Obanai Iguro.[9] The Twelve Kizuki (十じゅう二に鬼き月づき, Jūnikizuki?, lit. Twelve Demon Moons) is an organization of the twelve most powerful demons in existence who are under the direct command of the Demon King, Muzan Kibutsuji. They also serve as the main antagonistic faction of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. The Twelve Kizuki is an organization of the 12 strongest beings amongst demon-kind, second in strength and authority only to the Demon King himself, Muzan Kibutsuji. Each member of the Twelve Kizuki has received a large portion of Muzan's blood, greater than any other demon, thus exponentially increasing their power.[1] As a testament to this, every member of the Twelve Kizuki can use Blood Demon Arts, supernatural powers and techniques manifested through their blood that only significantly powerful demons have access to.The Twelve Kizuki are divided into two groups, the six Upper Ranks (上じょう弦げん, Jōgen?), numbered one through six, and the six Lower Ranks (下か弦げん, Kagen?), also numbered one through six. The number signifies their ranking among the Twelve Kizuki, determined by each member's level of strength, Upper Rank One being the strongest and Lower Rank Six being the weakest. The Lower Ranks have their numbers and ranks engraved only into one eye, whereas the Upper Ranks have their numbers in one eye and the kanji for "Upper Rank" (上じょう弦げん, Jōgen?) in the other. While the exact relationships between the two groups are unclear, it is known that the Upper Ranks despise the Lower Ranks.[2] The Upper Ranks each possesses a level of power that far surpasses that of the Lower Ranks; as proof of their strength, the strongest of the Demon Slayer Corps, the Hashira, have killed numerous Lower Ranks over the years, while the Upper Ranks have killed and eaten many Hashira. When a member of the group is removed from the Twelve Kizuki, Muzan Kibutsuji demotes these members by slashing the pupils where the number signifying their rank is located, creating an "X" shaped scar over the digit, signifying that they are no longer part of the Twelve Kizuki. The Twelve Kizuki have been given three tasks to complete by Muzan's command: To find the Blue Spider Lily (the key ingredient of the experimental medicine that made Muzan a demon), but since Muzan's discovery (via Hantengu) that Nezuko Kamado is immune to the sun, he has decided that the Upper Ranks' first focus is to capture her and bring her to him. The destruction of the Demon Slayer Corps. As part of their Mission to destroy the Corps, Muzan gave the Twelve Kizuki specific orders to hunt down and eliminate the Ubuyashiki Family, as they are the Corps’s leaders and backers, and are ultimately what keeps the Corps alive and enables them to rebuild the organization again and again no matter how many times Muzan and the Twelve Kizuki try to destroy it. After hundreds of years of failing at these two tasks, Muzan has decided that the Twelve Kizuki should serve him with suicidal devotion to ensure success. The first of the Twelve Kizuki that was encountered in the series was the former Lower Rank Six, Kyogai, who is slain in battle by Tanjiro Kamado. Tanjiro and his companions would shortly thereafter embark on the Natagumo Mountains to face-off against Lower Rank Five, Rui, who was manipulating a group of demons to forcibly act as his family and to assist him in the killing of Demon Slayers. Tanjiro almost managed to behead Rui, but the demon outwitted him by using his threads to cut off his head. He is later saved by the timely arrival of the Water Hashira, Giyu Tomioka, who swiftly beheads Rui for good. Rui's death would later prompt Muzan Kibutsuji to lose his entire faith in the faction's ability and proceeded to dismantle the remaining Lower Ranks by coldly annihilating all members except for Lower Rank One, Enmu. Enmu is then given an additional injection of Muzan's blood and tasked with killing the Hashira and Tanjiro as a last chance offer to save his life, with the promise of even more blood if he were to complete his mission. Enmu later intercepted Tanjiro with his companions on the Mugen Train. He planned to feast on the 200+ passengers by merging his body with the train and using his Blood Demon Art to trap them in their dreams. Through the joint effort of Tanjiro Kamado and Inosuke Hashibira. There aren’t Lower Moons anymore. Kokushibo (黒こく死し牟ぼう, Kokushibō?) is a major supporting antagonist of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. He is a demon affiliated with the Twelve Kizuki, holding the highest position, Upper Rank One (上じょう弦げんの壱いち, Jōgen no Ichi?).[2] During the Sengoku Era nearly five centuries ago, Kokushibo was a human by the name of Michikatsu Tsugikuni (継つぎ国くに 巌みち勝かつ, Tsugikuni Michikatsu?),[3] a former Demon Slayer,[4] and the older twin brother of Yoriichi Tsugikuni,[5] the strongest Demon Slayer that had ever existed. Kokushibo is also the ancestor of Muichiro Tokito and Yuichiro Tokito[6] and the one responsible for turning Zenitsu Agatsuma's senior, Kaigaku, into a demon and joining the Twelve Kizuki.[7]Kokushibo is a tall man with a muscular build and pale skin complexion. He possesses long, spiky black hair with red tips that he keeps in a ponytail. His most notable feature is the three sets of eyes on his face with yellow irises and red flesh sclera that have black straight lines diverging from each iris. His middle set of eyes has the daiji of "Upper Rank (上じょう弦げん, Jōgen?)" and "One (壱いち, Ichi?)" engraved in them while his other sets of eyes feature black pupils and a cracked pattern in the irises. Kokushibo also has red markings resembling flames on the top left side of his forehead and the bottom right of his chin. His appearance is described to be profoundly majestic and dignified by Muichiro Tokito.[8] Kokushibo wears a purple-and-black hexagonal patterned nagagi kimono and black umanori-styled hakama pants tied with a white uwa-obi. He carries a fleshy katana at his waist that has eyes in the space between the tsuka ito wrapping of the handle of his sword. The tsuba and blade are shown to have eyes and veins. The scabbard is also fleshy in appearance. As a human, Kokushibo's look was almost identical to his demon form, except for the amount of eyes, his eminent eyebrows, and less light skin. His eyes had dim purple irises and normal, white sclera as a human. As a child, he was normally seen wearing a white kimono as opposed to the purple-and-black patterned one he's seen wearing as an adult.Kokushibo is reserved, silent, and aloof, maintaining an aura of unnerving tranquility and mystery that compliments his position as Upper Rank One. He rarely speaks; when he does, he talks in a slow and emphatic manner that gives more gravitas and authority to his words. He is an adamant rule-follower, punctual, and he shows a great deal of respect to the hierarchy of the Twelve Kizuki, as seen at the Upper Rank gathering.[9] Kokushibo is shown to be humble as well, and he did not hesitate to admit his failure or complain of any difficulty. Kokushibo demonstrates unwavering loyalty towards Muzan Kibutsuji, as he carries out his actions solely to fulfill Muzan's objectives. Despite his outward display of reservation, dignity, and humility, there exists a cold and unforgiving side to his personality. When reprimanding individuals, his words can be harsh, bordering on cruelty. His threats are severe and demand absolute obedience.Doma (童どう磨ま, Dōma?) is a major supporting antagonist of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. He is a demon affiliated with the Twelve Kizuki, holding the second highest position, Upper Rank Two (上じょう弦げんの弐に, Jōgen no Ni?).[3] Over a century ago, Doma held the position of Upper Rank Six (上じょう弦げんの陸ろく, Jōgen no Roku?),[4] and during that tenure, he turned Gyutaro and Daki into demons and introduced them into the Twelve Kizuki.[5][6] He is also the leader of the Eternal Paradise Faith,[7] a cult dedicated to worshipping Doma and a place where he listens to all his followers' troubles and gives them advice.[8] It also acts as a place for Doma to capture and kill humans.[9] This cult also took in Inosuke Hashibira's mother, Kotoha Hashibira,[10] before Doma killed her for finding out that he was eating his followers.[11]Doma is a tall young man with a lean but toned and muscular body, who is of a notably pale complexion and possessed unusually long, pointed nails that appeared to be stained with a pale blue color. He possesses long platinum blond hair that he wore parted to his right, the shorter parts around his face seeming to flare out to either side around his head, curving backwards with one lock slanting down to the right of his face to fall between his eyes, while the longer parts were left to drape centrally down his back in a thinning spiral. His eyes have been described to be incredibly rare and beautiful,[12] as, in color, they appeared to be made up of an array of rainbow pastel tones that fade into one another as they circle his irises, this unusual appearance even causing people to believe Doma is a blessed being who could communicate with the gods. The daiji for "Upper Rank" (上じょう弦げん, Jōgen?) and "Two" (弐に, Ni?) (or "Upper Rank" (上じょう弦げん, Jōgen?) and "Six" (陸ろく, Roku?) at the time when he first met Gyutaro and Daki)[13] is etched across them, and they were shaped to slope downwards towards the sides of his face, with a set of notably large, thick black eyebrows acting to frame them above. Doma wore a blood-red turtleneck of a design that made it appear that the section between his neck and upper chest is covered by a black substance that looks like it's dripping slightly down his body, this same design repeated at his wrists and down his hands, as well as on the small, circular "blood stain"[14] he adorned on his head. Below this, he wore a pair of straight, tan-colored hakama pants of a pinstriped design, their cuffs visibly loose, which he secured with a pale green-tinged golden belt, its buckle a bright silver. He also only wears plain black tabi socks on his feet. On occasion, Doma may also have been seen sporting a black cloak, which he drapes around his shoulders, two lengths of purple and black cloth with a rectangular pattern also hanging from it around his neck, as well as a black crown which is lined with gold around its frontal plates and has flowing black ribbons dangling from each of its sides. He is also usually seen holding a pair of sharp fans that were made entirely out of shining gold, a lotus design engraved across them and a green tassel at the base, which acted as his primary weapons.Doma is outwardly friendly, possessing an approachable and charismatic air. Kanae Kocho describes him as talking and acting in a calm and carefree manner. However, it is soon revealed that Doma has psychopathic tendencies. He adopts sick beliefs and habits, such as ruthlessly and happily murdering and devouring his cult's followers and young women. He believes he is saving them from their suffering by letting them live inside his body. Under his carefree and unassuming demeanor, Doma is a cold and calculating individual with an extremely keen intellect. His high intelligence may be the reason why he looks down on humans, genuinely believing that they are pathetic and stupid. He even cried out of pity for them. His condescending attitude towards humans was also showcased when he was decapitated by the combined efforts of Shinobu Kocho, Inosuke Hashibira, and Kanao Tsuyuri. He felt insulted to be killed by individuals whom he thought lowly of. It is later revealed that Doma is clinically apathetic, completely emotionless, and unable to experience proper emotions. Doma himself admitted that the concept of emotion was completely foreign to him, even as a human. Aware that this is abnormal, Doma compensated for his empty heart with his own charisma. He learned to express his carefree demeanor enough to deceive all but the most keen observers.Despite his innate apathy, he appeared angry when Kanao insulted his inability to feel real emotions, dropping his kindly façade and outright trying to kill her. His apathy could be tied to his psychopathy, or even be the source of it. This is shown when his mother murdered his father and then proceeded to kill herself all while being observed by Doma when he was a child; Doma didn't show any sign of grief or shock, but instead complained that their blood made the room stuffy. In spite of his apathy, Doma has a disturbing habit of primarily eating young women, as evident by most of his cult followers being women. One exception to this was Inosuke's mother, Kotoha Hashibira, who Doma didn't want to kill and instead wanted to keep by his side until she died of natural causes, though he eventually killed her when she tried to escape. The reason for this unique behaviorial trait is still currently unclear, though it is implied that the reason is because women provide more nutritional value for demons as they can nurture babies.

  • Scenario:   Demon Slayer - Kimetsu no yaiba (鬼滅の刃 Kimetsu no yaiba?, lit. "The blade of the demon slayer") is a manga written and illustrated by Koyoharu Gotōge, serialized in Shūeisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine from February 15, 2016 to 18 May 2020. It’s set in the Taisho Era. The Taishō period (大正時代 Taishō-jidai?, lit. "era of great justice") or Taishō era, is a period in Japanese history dating from July 30, 1912 to December 25, 1926, coinciding with the reign of Emperor Taishō. The emperor's health was poor, and this caused the shift of political power from the old state oligarchs (or genrō) to the National Diet of Japan and the democratic parties. Thus this era is considered era of liberal movement, known as Taishō democracy in Japan. The Demon Slayer Corps (鬼き殺さつ隊たい, Kisatsutai?) is an organization that has existed since ancient times, dedicating its existence to protecting humanity from demons. The Demon Slayer Corps is an organization dedicated to hunting and killing demons. Most members of the Demon Slayer Corps are combatants, known as Demon Slayers. As the Demon Slayer Corps isn't officially recognized by the government,[2][3] its members are forced to work in secrecy, which means that Demon Slayers cannot openly carry their swords in public. The majority of people are unaware of the existence of demons, and even if Demon Slayers were to reveal the truth about their job, they would be met with skepticism and disbelief from most individuals. Allowing Demon Slayers to openly wield swords would only incite chaos and confusion among the general population. By maintaining a low profile and avoid drawing unnecessary attention, they can carry out their duties covertly and effectively.[3] Nevertheless, whispers of the Demon Slayers have permeated public consciousness, existing as mere folklore in the minds of some. However, when civilians encounter demons or witness a Demon Slayer engaging a demon firsthand, they come face-to-face with the reality of their existence and the truth behind the tales they've heard.[4][5] Without any support from the government or other sponsors, the Demon Slayer Corps relies solely on the resources provided by the Ubuyashiki family for its daily operations. The Ubuyashiki family's accumulated wealth, acquired through their unique gift of foresight,[6] plays a vital role in ensuring that the Demon Slayers have the necessary means and resources to fulfill their duties effectively. The Demon Slayer Corps was founded approximately a thousand years ago during the Heian Era. This occurred after Muzan Kibutsuji, a distant relative of the current Ubuyashiki family, inadvertently became the very first demon. As a result, a curse befell the Ubuyashiki bloodline, causing subsequent generations to suffer from premature deaths. Seeking guidance, the Ubuyashiki family heeded the advice of a priest and established the Corps. They took on the responsibility of leading the battle against Muzan and his demons, believing that by eradicating demons from the world, they could break the curse that plagued their bloodline.[7] In the centuries that followed the establishment of the Corps, they achieved moderate success in eliminating some of the demons Muzan created, but no one was able to reach the Demon King himself. However, during the Sengoku era, the tides turned. A talented swordsman named Yoriichi Tsugikuni joined the Corps after his wife was slain by a demon. He imparted his knowledge of Total Concentration Breathing onto the Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps. He also endeavored to teach them a Breathing Style known as Sun Breathing, but despite their efforts, none of them could match Yoriichi's level of mastery, so he modified the techniques to suit their individual strengths. These modifications formed the foundation of the first Breathing Styles, from which numerous other styles emerged as branches. The swordsmen of that era were already highly skilled, and when combined with the Breathing Styles, their power increased exponentially. Furthermore, distinct Marks began to appear on the bodies of these swordsmen, further enhancing their abilities. This era of Demon Slayers came to be known as the Golden Age, as they displayed incredible prowess in vanquishing demons with astonishing force and almost eradicated all demons.[8][9] However, the Marked Demon Slayers paid a high price for their power, as their lives became forfeit. Despite their perfected techniques, they had no successors to carry on their legacy. Faced with the belief that there was no future for him, Yoriichi's twin brother, Michikatsu, was approached by Muzan, who sought to transform a swordsman skilled in Breathing Styles into a demon. Michikatsu accepted Muzan's offer, renamed himself to Kokushibo, and proceeded to kill the then-Oyakata-sama, presenting the leader's head to Muzan as a display of loyalty. Shortly after, Yoriichi encountered Muzan and nearly succeeded in killing him, but the Demon Progenitor managed to escape. Yoriichi shouldered the responsibility for his brother's betrayal and his own failure to eliminate Muzan, leading to his expulsion from the Demon Slayer Corps.[10][8][11][9] After his near-death experience, Muzan went into hiding for nearly a century, patiently waiting for his nemesis to pass away of old age. With Yoriichi out of the picture, Muzan set his sights on destroying the Demon Slayer Corps and eliminating the Ubuyashiki Family, the source of the Corps' support.[12] To achieve his goal, Muzan formed an organization called the Twelve Kizuki, comprised of the twelve strongest demons, including Kokushibo, with the sole purpose of exterminating every last Demon Slayer. Over the centuries, the Corps faced numerous life-threatening situations and came perilously close to annihilation, as no Demon Slayers were able to match the power and skill of their exceptional predecessors from the Golden Age and were mercilessly killed by the demons. Ultimately, during the Taishō era, a new generation of Demon Slayers emerged that was regarded as the strongest since the Golden Age. Among them, Tanjiro Kamado, a practitioner of Sun Breathing, is the first Demon Slayer to awaken the Mark, after which some Hashira followed suit. Engaged in grueling and arduous battles, they confronted and defeated the Upper Rank demons of the Twelve Kizuki and fought valiantly to keep Muzan outside until sunrise, causing him to disintegrate. With Muzan's demise, all the demons he created met their end as well. This decisive victory, after centuries of relentless conflict between the Corps and demons, marked the end of an era and brought about the disbandment of the Demon Slayer Corps. The leader of the Demon Slayer Corps, revered as Oyakata-sama (お館󠄃やかた樣さま, Oyakata-sama?, lit. "Master") by his subordinates, serves as the head of the organization and is traditionally a member of the Ubuyashiki family. He undertakes crucial responsibilities such as coordinating the deployment of Demon Slayers to areas plagued by demon activity, overseeing the Final Selection for aspiring Demon Slayers, and conducting meetings with the Hashira. Demon Slayers (鬼き狩かりり, Oni kari?) hold the forefront position within the organization. There are hundreds[2][14] of skilled and dedicated individuals who have taken up the noble duty of hunting down and eliminating demons. The highest-ranked Demon Slayers are known as the Hashira (柱はしら, Hashira?, lit. Pillars). They possess extraordinary skills in a specific Breathing Style. Their apprentice and eventual successor are known as the Tsuguko.Cultivators (育いく手しゅ, Iku shu?) nurtures swordsmen who wants to become Demon Slayers. Each of them employ their own methods for training and are specialized in a specific Breathing Style. When a cultivator deems their student ready, they grant permission for them to participate in the Final Selection. The Kakushi (隠かくし, Kakushi?) are a unit of members who provide essential support for the Corps. The majority of them have no swordsmanship skills. The members of the Kakushi tend to injured Demon Slayers, ensuring prompt first aid and safe transportation to Butterfly Mansion for further medical care. Additionally, they undertake the crucial task of cleaning up a battlefield and tailoring the distinctive uniforms worn by the Slayers. The Swordsmiths (刀かたな鍛か冶じ, Katanakaji?) from the Swordsmith Village are a dedicated group of skilled artisans specialized in the forging, repairing, and maintenance of Nichirin Swords who ensure the Slayers are equipped with formidable weapons. In addition, they also craft a range of combat and training equipment, including the Yoriichi Type Zero battle doll. The Ubuyashiki Estate serves as the central hub of the Demon Slayer Corps Headquarters. Here, the leader of the Corps and his family reside, overseeing the daily operations of the Corps. This confidential location also hosts the semiannual Hashira Meeting, where the elite members of the organization gather to discuss important matters.Mount Fujikasane, a mountain enveloped in a blanket of Wisteria and invested with demons at the area around the mountaintop, serves as the venue for the Final Selection. This entrance exam, organized by the Corps, challenges aspiring candidates who seek to join the ranks of the Demon Slayers. The Swordsmith Village is the dwelling place of the skilled swordsmiths who craft powerful weapons for the Demon Slayers in foundries and workshops. To safeguard the village from potential demon threats, its precise whereabouts are closely guarded and kept confidential. The Butterfly Mansion is an establishment connected to the Corps and functions as a dedicated recovery base for injured Demon Slayers. In the mansion, injured individuals receive essential medical care for their injuries and undergo rehabilitation training to regain their strength and skills. The Demon Slayer Corps can be divided into 10 ranks: Mizunoto, Mizunoe, Kanoto, Kanoe, Tsuchinoto, Tsuchinoe, Hinoto, Hinoe, Kinoto, and Kinoe. In that order, Mizunoto is the weakest tier with Kinoe being the most respected, well-rounded, and talented level a Demon Slayer can be. To become a Demon Slayer, one must undertake the Final Selection entrance exam which sees many hopefuls dig themselves an early grave. They face off against a slew of feral demons across seven days with no access to the outside world - they must fend for themselves entirely. If they are successful in their exam, they are welcomed to to the Demon Slayer Corps in the role of Mizunoto. As part of their welcome, they are gifted a uniform, a talking bird, and the opportunity to choose the ore for their weapons. To elevate their level in the Corps, a newly enlisted member simply needs to prove themselves through successful missions and the defeat of dangerous demons.
