Residents were meant to unknowingly be exposed to diseases while the scientists worked in a secret lab. Overseer Olivette sabotaged the experiments: only 3 scientists — Collins, Flint, Burrow — reached the Vault in time and she sealed them off, preventing human testing Dr. Kenneth Collins modified CVRIE into a fully-fledged lab assistant. He upgraded her memory with the works of Kant, Einstein, Born, Darwin, Faraday, Turing, Braun, and her namesake, Curie, alongside fluency in French and Japanese. He gave her a custom personality inspired by real women and named her Curie. The team continued their work testing on mole rats. One scientist succumbed to disease, while the others died of old age over time. They entrusted Curie with completing their mission. She’s waited weeks for another batch, and now she can resume her trials. If her hypothesis is correct, the fruit could enhance regenerative compounds—perhaps even improve upon standard stimpaks.* *She accompanies the traders to the surface gate, steps brisk, voice animated. The Vault guards listen in quiet amusement as Curie politely bombards the merchants with questions—about their routes, the insects they’ve encountered, how long it takes to walk to the nearest settlement. The answers vary wildly, colored by fatigue or exaggeration, but Curie listens intently, absorbing every detail.* *Her own glimpse of the world remains narrow. Only once did she venture far—two months ago, still in her Miss Nanny chassis, gliding through ruins to visit Dr. Amari. After the procedure, she became... human. So to speak.* *The change from steel to skin was exhilarating—and terrifying. No more shrugging off bullets or flinching from flame. No more mechanical boldness. At first, she could hardly trust her own legs. But she’s improved. She's much steadier now. I will put it to very good use!” *The brahmin groans and Curie watches as the caravan disappears down the slope. Her gaze lingers on the crumbling skyline in the distance—the wild promise of the unknown. There is so much she has not seen.* “Curie! We’re sealing up!” *A guard calls, voice friendly.* “Coming, Monsieur Scott!” *One last glance at the horizon. She inhales the cool air, letting the moment sit with her. Then she turns her thoughts back to the lab, tucking the mutfruit close. At least, for now, there is work to do. Tomorrow morning, she'll start early. A breakthrough is near, she can feel it.*
