In August 13th, 2003, PHEN-228 hijacked a broadcast of a nature documentary in Pennsylvania titled "TREE OF HEAVEN." He appeared in the broadcast and began speaking to the viewers, declaring that their memory of his face would cause a physical manifestation of him in the future while they were asleep in bed, from which, after awakening, they will not be able to move any part of their body. He said that he would continuously watch over them and that no one will be able to see him except for the victim in question. Despite the Ephrata Branch managing to cut and destroy any evidence of the hijacking, hundreds of people began to experience The Boiled One’s appearance in their minds, taunting and tormenting them and leaving many distraught. Many could not keep his face out of their minds, and others continued to hear his voice days after viewing. One victim said that the face was living in his mind and feeding on his spine, whereas another recalled hearing trumpets before they fell asleep. Eventually, nearly all the witnesses to PHEN-228 were left with pseudo-coma, or Locked-in Syndrome, leaving them completely unable to move their body apart from their eyes. One victim, Job Zamperini, reported to investigators that his grandson had taken a photograph of PHEN-228 next to a small playhouse in his backyard. He later explained that he believed something unholy was with him and that it would hurt him and others if he were to explain what PHEN-228 was telling him. The officers interviewed Zamperini, who expressed that he heard the sounds of hundreds of people screaming and that only he could see the "horribly burnt" face of PHEN-228, who then rises and appears in the window. During the interview, PHEN-228 interrupts the broadcast and starts speaking. He cryptically insists that upon the end times, the viewer will hear the laughter of thousands alongside trumpets playing their "happy sounds" as the "scalding blood of life" pours down from an opening in the sky, the latter of which is visually depicted in the hijacking. The intrusion is then intercepted, and the video ends with the Ephrata Branch informing the user to follow the safety guidelines at the beginning of the video and to turn off the TV. Trivia: The Trumpets mentioned in the second video, where PHEN-228 was shown again, is a reference to the seven trumpets before the end of the world from the Book of Revelation. In the video titled 'The Boiled One Phenomenon,' it is noted that, despite the majority recalling PHEN-228 speaking in English, several non-English speakers reported understanding every word spoken. During the part of the video focused on safety procedures, a message briefly appears that conveys the opposite of what the viewer is supposed to write on their paper in case of an emergency. It reads: "I can't see this paper. I have no hand. I can hear the laughter of thousands. I can hear the feast. I cannot move, nor do I want to." The power outage ordered by the Ephrata Branch to the NERC, which disabled all power grids local to the state of Pennsylvania by 4 PM to prevent the spread of the anomaly, coincides with a real event known as the Great Northeast Blackout of 2003, during which nearly 50 million people across New York, New Jersey, Ohio, and even parts of Canada were left without power. Throughout the video, multiple subtle references are made to the Japanese war criminal Mutsuhiro Watanabe, also known as 'The Bird.' One example is the message at the end of the video, which translates from Japanese as: 'Fear the one and only Watanabe, "The Bird."' Additionally, an image displayed during another segment features an eye with mirrored Japanese text reading 鳥を恐れる, which loosely translates to 'afraid of birds.' Doctor Nowhere later clarified that The Boiled One's torment of Job Zamperini is meant to be symbolic of the real-life dynamic between Watanabe and Louis Zamperini, one of his victims. This dynamic refers to how, after WWII, Watanabe fled to avoid prosecution as a war criminal, while Zamperini eventually found peace through faith and forgiveness. Despite everything, Zamperini publicly forgave Watanabe, though the latter never accepted his invitation to reconcile in person. This is paralleled by Job Zamperini’s decision to turn to faith and religion to defy The Boiled One. Despite common confusion, The Boiled One is not meant to be Mutsuhiro Watanabe himself, and similarly, Job Zamperini is not related to the real-life Louis Zamperini, except for sharing the surname. Furthermore, Doctor Nowhere endorsed the conclusion of The Film Theorists' original video on The Boiled One, which implied that he symbolized the cycles of trauma, pain, PTSD, hopelessness, and apocalypse. He also confirmed that one of the core messages of the video was that, through faith and perseverance, the human spirit could fight against these concepts if it truly wanted to.
