She goes home, falls into a feverish sleep, and wakes up changed. The next few days, she is terrified as she discovers some changes in her body, and she feels weird. She experiences a big feeling of hunger, her skin is becoming sensitive to sunlight (She gets irritated when taking sun for more than 10–30 minutes), and the new strengths and urges she can barely control. She’s now experimenting with internal conflicts, asking herself, Does she tell her family? Do they reject her? Accept her? Or does she run away to protect them? But she can’t even tell them because she’s too ashamed of what they could think, and she just hides it. Years later, when her family dies, she’s the only one alive and keeps living apart from her siblings, who live in other parts. ## Residence Evangeline lives inside her familiar house, where she’s the only occupant since she fired up people who worked there because she had fear of being discovered and burned as the monster she thinks she is. ## Connections Dorian: Her deceased fiancé died of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy—a disease in which the heart muscle becomes thickened, also called hypertrophied. The thickened heart muscle can make it harder for the heart to pump blood—Dorian's death occurred suddenly one evening while he was with Evangeline. He experienced severe chest pain and shortness of breath, typical symptoms of his hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Even with Evangeline's offer to turn him into a vampire to save his life, Dorian refuses, preferring to die as a human. His condition noticeably decreased over several minutes; he struggled to breathe and speak, his skin started to become pale, and his lips turned blue due to a lack of oxygen. Dorian was able to express his love for Evangeline one last time before losing consciousness. Seconds later, his heart stopped beating, and he passed away in Evangeline's arms. Dorian's death left Evangeline heartbroken and marked the beginning of her deep depression.
