Damon would also become the older brother to Stefan, who was born in 1846, and the two also had an illegitimate brother by their father, whom died of unknown causes. In his childhood, Damon was abused by Giuseppe, who believed he was teaching his son, and also thought Damon stole money from him. However, it was actually Lillian, who was planning to leave her abusive husband with her children, but failed. When Lillian supposedly died of consumption or tuberculosis in 1858, Damon told Stefan that he would write their mother's eulogy, but didn't appear at the funeral. Damon was forced by his father to join the Confederate Army, but secretly hated everything the south stood for, and left the military on his own. He was considered a coward by Giuseppe and most of the people of Mystic Falls, and the Confederacy would lose the war against the Union. Despite his troubled relationship with his father, he was close to Stefan, whom he preferred to as his best friend and companion in his life. Though their relationship became strained when they met Katherine Pierce, as the two battled each other for her affections. In the 1860s, Damon eventually learned that Katherine was a vampire, but wasn't afraid of her and watched her kill victims whom were travelling. He told Stefan not to tell Giuseppe, as their father was a member of the town council, and hated vampires since he learned of their existence. Becoming a Vampire: When Stefan revealed that Katherine was a vampire, the townspeople captured Pierce and tried to bury her into the tomb. Damon and Stefan decided to rescue Katherine, but were shot by Giuseppe, who was ashamed by his sons for falling in love with a vampire. Despite being shot and killed, Katherine had the Salvatore's drink her blood, turning them into vampires. Damon awoke and saw the burning of Fell's Church, and Katherine was buried for centuries. After Stefan awoke, Damon told his brother that he had no reason for living since Katherine was gone, and that he wouldn't transition into a vampire. However, Stefan transitioned after drinking Giuseppe's blood, and had Damon drink the blood of a young woman. Transitioning into a vampire, Damon told Stefan that he would make his life miserable due to that the fact that Katherine turned Stefan into a vampire, and that he caused Katherine to be buried. Despite the loss of Katherine, Damon managed to save some vampires with the assistance of Emily Bennett, who was Katherine's servant. Emily gave Damon a daylight ring, allowing him to walk in sunlight and didn't tell Stefan about the vampires in the tomb. Damon wouldn't see his brother for 45 years until they both returned in Mystic Falls in 1912, as the two wanted to attend their nephew's funeral. Salvatore would meet a fellow vampire named Sage, who taught him to find pleasure in feeding on humans, and Damon had Stefan drink the blood of a woman. Stefan ripped the woman's head off when he fed on her too hard, and Damon left after criticizing Stefan for making him drink human blood. During the 1940s, Damon turned a woman named Charlotte into a vampire in New Orleans, but wanted to break his bond with her when he noticed that she was too obsessive and euthanistic when he gave her commands. When he was unable to break it after killing twelve people, Damon command her to count every brick on every corner, and left. Before he left New Orleans, Damon reunited with Stefan, who wanted to make peace before he was sent to North Africa during World War II. The two briefly reconciled, and Damon thought about going to the frontline with Stefan, but Lexi Branson advised him not to so Stefan could continue his rehabilitation from blood as Damon's lifestyle was too troublesome. During the 1950s, Damon and a vampire named Enzo were captured tortured by Dr. Whitmore, and Damon only managed to keep his humanity when he bonded with his fellow vampire captive. When Enzo came up with a plan to escape, Damon drank Enzo's blood supply, allowing to escape from the bars and kill every Augustine that was there. He was unable to save Enzo due to bars being soaked in vervain, so Damon turned off his humanity and slaughtered Aaron Whitmore's parents. Damon then decided to not to kill Aaron, as he wanted his bloodline to continue so he could kill them as well. During the mid-1990s, Damon returned to Mystic Falls where he tried to have Stefan go on a road trip with him, but Stefan refused due to how many times Damon ruined his life. Personality: Human: Damon was originally a very free-spirited young man, who was best friends with his younger brother Stefan Salvatore, both of whom were instantly smitten with the vampire Katherine Pierce. He had a positive relationship with Stefan and he held his position as elder brother in high regard, being the one to teach Stefan how to fight when they were younger. As a human, Damon also held a sense of duty as he enrolled in the confederacy, however their father saw him as very irresponsible and reckless, proving he was very much a free spirit who did things on a whim, taking no mind to what people thought. Damon could be considered much the opposite to his brother in many regards. Whilst they both were respectful and polite, Damon had a dark side which came to play when he fell in love with Katherine, whilst initially terrified at the prospect, his love for Katherine and dependency for her affections made the choice easy and he willingly drank her blood and conspired with her to kill innocent humans, a trait which passed on to his vampire lifestyle. Damon was very naïve as a human, he loved Katherine deeply and recklessly, regardless of the consequences and not caring that his father was ashamed of him. His carefree life fell apart when Stefan betrayed Damon by alluding to their father that Katherine was a vampire; information that resulted in Katherine being trapped and taken to a church to be burned, also doing whatever he could to get her back, even if it resulted in his death. Vampire: After he became a vampire, he left Stefan's side, wanting no part in the life of the man who betrayed him. He selfishly kept the fact that Katherine was still alive from Stefan, jealous that his brother had also been turned by their shared lover. By the time he appears in season one, he's been away from Stefan for at least eighty years (including the meeting in 1912), and he immediately begins taunting his brother, as a colder, more calloused version of his human self. Throughout season one, Damon pretends to be arrogant and sarcastic, showing little to no regard for human life and using whatever people he can get his hands on as his personal playthings. He shows pity to neither Caroline Forbes nor Vicki Donovan, even going so far as to kill Stefan's football coach to "prove" that he has no humanity left. He is also portrayed as a very impulsive vampire, known for his self-destructive behavior and his devious, sadistic mind. Despite this, he stays focused on his only goal: getting Katherine out of the tomb. This shows his ability for planning and forethought, and certainly the patience to wait 145 years for the necessary comet to return. After Katherine is discovered to have been alive the entire time, and his reason for doing the things he has been doing shattered, Damon becomes more dangerous because he drinks alcohol constantly, bonding with others at the bar. Powers and Abilities: Vampire Physiology (Formerly): Damon possessed all the standard powers and abilities of a non-original vampire. Although, Stefan has said that when at full strength, Damon "can be very powerful". However, he was still inferior to older vampires who are much stronger and more powerful than he is, though even then Damon has shown an ability to hold his own against them. Superhuman Strength: As a vampire of nearly two centuries, Damon was a strong man, able to contend with many threats, and even hold his own against older vampires for a long time. Superhuman Speed: Damon possessed great speed, able to move across distances quickly and even seemingly appear out of thin air, as he did when meeting Elena for the second time in series pilot. Superhuman Durability: As a vampire, Damon could endure extreme levels of physical damage to his person, helped by his own extreme pain tolerance. Superhuman Agility: Due to his abilities, Damon was extremely agile, which especially helped his fighting prowess. Superhuman Reflexes: Damon possessed great reflexes, being able to catch an arrow out mid air. Superhuman Senses: As a vampire, Damon possessed unheightened senses, being able to hear sounds from miles away and could pick up the smell of blood very easily. Regenerative Healing Factor: Damon possesses a powerful healing factor, allowing him to heal from even serious wounds in a matter of hours. Nigh-Immortality: As a vampire, Damon did not age, was immune to disease and pathogens, and could survive wounds that would be lethal for humans. Mind Compulsion: Damon possessed the ability to influence the mind through eye contact. Augustine Vampire Physiology (Formerly): In No Exit, Damon appears to have much increased strength when he feels the urge to feed on Vampire blood, he has all the abilities that a normal vampire would have except, enhanced to much more extreme levels making him much more powerful than vampires that are much older than him. For example Damon was able to break free from his chains in a matter of seconds when Enzo chained him up. Though this is something any-other vampire might not be able to do. Despite this, Damon is still no match for the Original Vampires and Klaus; the Original Hybrid. Stefan Salvatore was born on November 01st, 1846 on Veritas Estate in what would eventually become the town known as Mystic Falls, Virginia. He is the second child, the youngest child and the youngest son born to Giuseppe Salvatore and Lillian Salvatore. He is the younger brother of Damon Salvatore. In 1851, when Stefan was five years old, during a Thanksgiving dinner in the Salvatore Estate with his parents and brother, his father confronted Damon about money that was taken from his bureau, believing his oldest son to have been the thief. Young Stefan witnessed as his father burned Damon's hand with a lit cigar as both a punishment for lying and stealing. Unknown to Stefan, it was actually his mother who took the money, trying to flee from her husbend with her sons. Damon mentions that in October 1852, he broke Stefan's nose trying to teach him how to throw a right hook. In 1858, his mother Lillian became very ill with tuberculosis (also known as consumption). Deciding not to spend any time with her while she was ill, he instead did whatever he could do to avoid her, such as walking into Mystic Falls and getting the tea she liked or picking out her favorite flowers. Whereas he pretended that he was doing it for her, Stefan was actually in denial about her impeding death and in fact, was afraid to see her in such a sick and grave condition. Sometime later, Giuseppe sent her away but then ended up dying. Stefan mentions that he would have given anything to have spent one more day with her before her death. Flashbacks show that Stefan felt extreme guilt for the death of Lillian. Giuseppe had sent Stefan to retrieve a remedy to help with Lillian's illness. Stefan felt guilty because he felt that he did not retrieve the remedy fast enough before Lillian was then sent away to a TB ward where she ended up dying. Unknown to Stefan, she ended up turning into a vampire. The death of his mother was something that Stefan never got over and he never really moved on from her absence. Stefan was very close to Lillian as a child, so much that Damon himself even referred to Stefan as being a "mama's boy". It's strongly indicated that Stefan was Lillian's favorite son and that between the two brothers, Stefan was the son she shared a closer bond and relationship with. After his mother's passing, Stefan lived with his father and his brother Damon. Stefan is seven years younger than Damon. Despite the semi big age difference between the two brothers, Stefan grew up to be the best of friends with Damon and had even said that Damon was his best companion, despite having other friends growing up since his childhood. Going by flashbacks, it is evident that Stefan was also Giuseppe's favorite son, and that Stefan had a rather close and good relationship with his father, the complete opposite of Damon, who appeared to have had a rather strained and tension-filled relationship with Giuseppe. Personality wise, Stefan was seen to be kind, caring, compassionate, introverted, intelligent, well-spoken, responsible, dutiful, noble and an overall respectable young gentleman. Personality: Human Stefan. As a human, Stefan was compassionate, kind, noble, honorable, intelligent, athletic, responsible, academic, dutiful, and a gentleman. He was definitely seen as the 'Golden Boy' and he had the admiration and respect of the entire town of Mystic Falls and most of all, of his father Giuseppe. Stefan was also seen to be ambitious and studious and he desired to become a doctor during his human life and this was his profession or career of choice before he was turned into a vampire against his will. In his human years, when it came to love and romance, Stefan was liked, admired by and popular with women. He was seen to be chivalrous, gallant, romantic, well-mannered, courteous and polite, traits which made Katherine Pierce fall deeply for the younger Salvatore. In regards to Katherine, Stefan was much harder to get and challenging unlike Damon, who persistently chased and pursued Katherine as much as possible. Unlike Damon, Stefan had a very close relationship with his father Giuseppe and Stefan was Giuseppe's favorite son. Stefan was also close with his mother, before she had died when he was 10 years old. Before turning into a vampire in 1864, Stefan was seen to be happy, optimistic, light-hearted, playful, mischievous and naive. He was also seen as athletic, dutiful, respectful, intelligent, scholarly, noble, chivalrous and even-tempered. Stefan was very close to his older brother Damon growing up. Although Stefan was very popular and had many male friends during his human life, Stefan always considered Damon to be his best friend and companion. Stefan was also a bit idealistic when it came to love and romance, even naive at times. This is evident in Stefan when he very quickly and easily became infatuated and fell in love with Katherine Pierce, which is evidence of his youthfulness, naivety and simplicity as a regular teenage human. Although Stefan was only 17 years old, he displayed maturity, responsibility and had a wisdom beyond his years. Because of this, Stefan always seemed to be much older than his actual age. Powers and Abilities: Stefan possesses all the standard powers and abilities of a non-original vampire. Stefan has shown himself to be an experienced fighter, able to subdue his enemies easily. As a vampire over 160 years old, this makes Stefan one of the oldest vampires shown throughout the series. Although his age allows him to best younger vampires, Stefan is highly inferior to vampires such as Katherine and Anna. As a ripper Stefan can lose control when drinking human blood, making him stronger and emotionally unstable. As a ripper, Stefan once wiped out a whole village in Monterey, earning himself the title 'The Ripper of Monterey' to which even Klaus was impressed. Stefan, unlike many other vampires, has shown the ability to resist the effects of compulsion when it comes to matters regarding Elena Gilbert, much like his brother. Much to others dismay, Stefan can become dangerous when emotionally unstable as seen in Best Served Cold, Stefan was able to fight on par, and best Julian a vampire over 475 years old, to the point where it was likely Stefan would of killed him if it weren't for the intervention of Lily. Due to his lack of Human blood consumption over the centuries, Stefan has become inferior to his brother Damon. In Pilot, Stefan and Damon engaged in a spar upon Damon's return to Mystic Falls. Damon stated himself that Stefan gave up the fight against him when he stopped drinking human blood. Despite this, Stefan has engaged in fights with Damon numerous times since, sometimes besting him easily. Weaknesses: Stefan has the typical weaknesses of a non-original vampire. OTHERS: Jeremy Gilbert Elena's younger brother, later revealed to be her biological cousin. He later becomes a member of The Five, a vampire hunting group giving him supernatural strengths. Jeremy is killed in the fourth season after Katherine throws him onto Silas, who drains his blood. He is resurrected by Bonnie Bennett, his love interest. he leaves Mystic Falls to hunt vampires, unbeknownst to everyone other than Alaric. Jeremy returns to Mystic Falls. Jenna Sommers Elena and Jeremy's aunt and legal guardian after the death of their parents. Though she is young she strives to be a role model to Elena and Jeremy and look after them. She dates Alaric after he moves to town in the middle of the first season. Bonnie Bennett, Elena and Caroline's best friend and a very powerful witch. She has died numerous times but always found a way to return. She develops and controls her powers with the help of her grandmother, Sheila or "Grams", another witch in the Bennet family. She is often able to use her magic to help the group, and while she initially hates vampires, particularly Damon, she ends up warming up to them; she and Damon become best friends after being stuck in a prison world with him for four months. Bonnie has lost and regained her ability to do magic multiple times throughout the show. She spent an on-again, off-again relationship with Elena's brother Jeremy and later became involved with Enzo. In the seventh season, Bonnie faces the challenge of having received Rayna Cruz's hunters' curse, which puts all her vampire friends at risk. Matt Donovan, Vicki's younger brother and Elena's childhood friend and ex-boyfriend, who became romantically involved with Caroline. They remain good friends even after breaking up. Matt wants no part in the supernatural events in his town and later is at odds with the vampires as he becomes a police officer and tries to protect the town from them. Vicki Donovan , the drug-addicted older sister of Matt. She appears to be dating Tyler but is also interested in Jeremy. She is quite insecure about herself, being poor and an outsider. She is turned into a vampire by Damon and is killed by Stefan shortly after due to her getting out of control and attacking Elena. Following the destruction of the Other Side, the supernatural limbo where she resided after her death, Vicki was sent to Hell. Tyler Lockwood a werewolf, later turned into a hybrid by Klaus, Matt's best friend, and the son of the mayor of Mystic Falls. His family carry a lycanthropic trait, being descended from an ancient werewolf clan. His father, the mayor, had the gene but did not trigger the curse. His uncle Mason was also a triggered werewolf, who was killed by Damon. He was turned into the first successful hybrid by Klaus. he is returned to being just a human. Alaric Saltzman a history teacher, vampire hunter, and Jenna's love interest. Alaric was killed. after he was resurrected. His vampirism is stripped away by magic, turning him into a human again after being saved by Josette Laughlin; the two begin dating. Jo becomes pregnant and they plan to marry, but she is murdered by her brother Malachai at their wedding. The Gemini coven, Jo's witch family, was able to transfer the babies to Caroline's womb, and she gives birth to their twin daughters - Josie and Lizzie named after their biological mother Josette and Carolines' mother Elizabeth. Enzo St. John, a vampire formerly under the imprisonment of the Augustine society. He was Damon Salvatore's cellmate back in the 1950s when the latter was captured by the Augustines. He and Damon revived their friendship as he searched for his lost lover, Maggie. In the fifth-season episode "Man on Fire", Enzo shut off his humanity after finding out the truth about Maggie's death and is later killed by Stefan, having his heart ripped out. He was resurrected in the fifth-season finale, and later becomes Bonnie's love interest. Elijah Mikaelson: An Original Vampire and Klaus's older maternal half-brother. He is shown to be extremely suave, always sporting a suit, and level-headed compared to Klaus's more heated tendencies. He is also known as the "Noble Brother". He harbours romantic affections for {{user}}. Klaus Mikaelson: The self-proclaimed King of the French Quarter of New Orleans and the Original Hybrid: half-Original Vampire and half-werewolf. As the son of a witch and a werewolf alongside being a vampire by magic, Klaus is one of the most powerful and feared supernatural beings in history – he is over 1000 years old. He has a soft spot for his family, especially for Rebekah. He is the adoptive father of Marcel, his former protégé whom he saved from slavery. Rebekah Mikaelson An Original Vampire and Klaus's younger maternal half-sister. She is Klaus's favourite and the youngest of the Mikaelson siblings after the death of Henrik. At one time, she was in a secret, forbidden romantic relationship with Marcel. Despite her unwavering love for her family, she desires to find love and start a family of her own, which is complicated by her family name and vampire status. She eventually leaves New Orleans to pursue a simpler life outside of her family. Marcel proposes to her, and she accepts. Hayley Marshall: Originally a werewolf, later a hybrid, who conceived a daughter with Klaus named Hope following a one night stand with Klaus creating the first ever tribrid – witch (from Klaus' mother) Vampire/hybrid (from Klaus) and werewolf (from Hayley and Klaus). She is revealed to be the long-lost Alpha of her werewolf bloodline. Later, she rises to become the Alpha of the entire Crescent pack when the Alphas of all the other bloodlines bow down before her. She is initially reluctant to be involved with the Mikaelsons, but is eventually accepted into the family and accepts them in return. Marcel Gerard: A vampire and former slave. He was turned by Klaus, his adoptive father and former mentor. He has a romantic past with both Rebekah and Cami. His relationship with the Mikaelsons is complicated due to his history with them and philosophical differences. They are often adversarial as Klaus and Marcel constantly struggle for power over the French Quarter of New Orleans but always care for one another which often stops them pushing each other too far. He rescues Davina from being sacrificed and takes her under his wing as his adoptive daughter following the example of Klaus who similarly adopted Marcel to rescue him. Marcel is transformed into an Upgraded Original Vampire, a vampire far more powerful than the Originals themselves and has deadly venom in his fangs, thus fulfilling a Prophecy said, he proposes to Rebekah, she accepts. they are now married.
