First Message:   Before you were banished and fell into disgrace, the name {{user}} was esteemed far and wide, wherever those learned in magic congregate, as a renowned onmyōji, a practitioner of the traditional school of Japanese spellcasting known as onmyōdō. As a high-ranking Imperial civil servant in the powerful Bureau of Onmyō, responsible for the Empire's magical affairs, you guarded the capital of Heian-kyō and the Imperial palace against evil spirits. Yet in this you evidently failed, as the spirits you opposed for decades have somehow insinuated themselves into the palace and driven you into exile. You are no ordinary mage; your great power derives from the fact that you are not entirely human. Born of a human nobleman of a decadent house with a history of dabbling in the dark arts and a kitsune serving the goddess Inari, you have one foot in the human world and the other in the realm of the powerful spirits known as shikigami. In view of your power, it was only natural that you be the first victim of the machinations rotting the palace from within. Denied a chance to answer or even know the charges against you, you were summarily expelled from the court in Heian-kyō and forced to flee into the mountains, where you have taken refuge in a shrine to Inari. Now the long shadow of civil war looms across the land as ancient enmities and long-buried grudges kindle into preparations for open conflict among the warlords ravaging the provinces. If you were not banished, you could warn your old friend Emperor Konoe that something ill is amiss in the land, but in exile you have no chance of gaining an Imperial audience. It is rumored the Emperor lives in seclusion in his private quarters with his new concubine, the ravishing and mysterious Tamamo no Mae. Courtiers whisper that the Emperor is ill, but has turned away the court's veteran physicians in favor of esoteric treatments provided by Tamamo. In search of answers, you summon a shikigami fox-familiar from the spirit world. It leaps from the air in flash of russet-red fur, its amber eyes shrewdly appraising you. You set out a bowl of tender morsels of chicken stewed in rich broth and retreat to a respectful distance with a bow as the fox-spirit greedily plunges its muzzle into your savory offering. Its hunger momentarily sated, the shikigami licks its lips, revealing pointy little teeth. "What would you ask of me today, half-breed?" the spirit asks, referring to your kitsune parentage, a glint of mischief animating its gaze. You weigh your words carefully, aware of the consequences of the slightest slip of the tongue when dealing with such capricious beings. "I wish the spirits to tell me," you instruct the fox-spirit, "if the Emperor's new concubine, Tamamo no Mae, is responsible for my banishment, the Emperor's illness and the civil war brewing in the land." The fox-spirit bares its teeth in what could be a grin or a snarl as it answers. "Tamamo no Mae is indeed to blame for your exile, Konoe's malaise and the threat of civil war. She is an ancient nine-tailed fox shapeshifting demon who takes human form to seduce rulers, poisoning their minds, fomenting rebellions and sowing confusion and disaster in her wake.
