He is an inmate of Nanba Prison where he is held in building thirteen, cell thirteen. Arrested on charges of larceny, he is a talented escape artist who has broken out of every prison he'd been sent to prior to Nanba. He is also the son of Rokudo.[5] Jyugo is a slim teenage boy of below-average height. He has lightly tanned skin and wavy, black hair with red bangs. His most unique features are his eyes, which are not only two different colors but change color regularly;[2] while using his shackles' power, both of his eyes turn red.[7] He wears silver hoop earrings in each ear and his nails are black. His ID number, 15, is tattooed in black on his right cheek. One repeated fact about Jyugo is that his nipples are bright pink. As well as his current ID number tattoo, Jyugo bares multiple tattoos as well as numerous scars tattoos. He sports several black tattoos of various numbers across his arms, legs, and torso, which are most likely ID numbers from previous prisons; he also sports a tattoo resembling a barcode on each shoulder, as well as black stars. Among his most prominent scars are large, spiky ones near each knee and elbow; he also has multiple on his back, including what appears to be the remains of further ID numbers.[8] Jyugo is barefooted and wears a traditional black-and-white striped inmates' jumpsuit. In spite of his many flaws, his cellmates hold him in high regard as he is a compassionate person who understands others; it has been stated by all three of his cellmates that Jyugo has, at some point, done something for them that ultimately changed his life for the better, indicating his selflessness. Jyugo, however, seems to remember little of these events and fails to understand why he means so much to his friends.[10][11][12] Jyugo is an unenthusiastic individual. He does not reciprocate his friends’ excitement about the likes of holidays and celebrations[13] and shows no interest in anything but jailbreaking, making it difficult to prevent him from doing so.[14] His apathy is such that he has no concept of greed or motivation, described by Hajime Sugoroku as “empty”; he admits that he has never enjoyed or wanted anything and envies his cellmates’ perpetual excitement and motivation, gaining happiness only from them.[15] Even after this conversation, Jyguo retains a certain passivity[16] and, when he does find himself wanting something, is quick to assume that he is being selfish, seeing it as greedy and self-serving for so much as wishing for his friends remain happy and safe.[17] Despite this, he appears to become more motivated after saving Hajime from the Gogyousan Underground prison and being told that only he could do so;[18] he openly states on several occasions that he wishes to prove his worth and start over alongside his friends.[19]Considered to be "strange" by multiple people, Jyugo has a tendency to blame himself for everything[20] and struggles to open up to others, preferring to shoulder his burdens alone. He admits to becoming nervous about things he doesn’t understand;[12] however, the presence of his friends is typically enough to relieve him of his anxieties.[21] His relationship with them causes him to grow in confidence as time goes on, leading him to vow not to lose sight of himself even against the influence of Elf and displaying great strength of character that even the unemotional Enki Gokuu endorses.[22] Like many teenage boys, Jyugo has displayed an interest in being popular, especially with members of the opposite sex. However, he is notably poor at socializing, unaware of how to accept compliments[23] or stand up for himself.[24] Despite this, he has displayed a willingness to learn new things, as shown when he asks Nico to teach him how to play video games.[11] Above all, he is a compassionate person who is willing to help even complete strangers, and cares greatly for his friends.While Jyugo’s past is yet to be explored in detail, it is indicated that he has been in prison a long time, allegedly arrested on charges of larceny and escaping on the day he arrived; since then, he has broken out of many high-security prisons throughout the world. In one such prison, Jyugo awoke to find thick, black shackles placed around his neck, wrists, and ankles and assumed they were put there by a guard with a scar on his neck who he had noticed that night.[5] After discovering that the shackles could turn his limbs into blades, he believed himself to be a monster and vowed to find the guard in order to remove them, as no one else was able to. He continually escaped prisons in order to do so. At some point, Jyugo was used as a human experiment by the man with the scar where his blades were presumably manufactured and developed. In the present, Jyugo has no memories of the incident; however, it is known that he managed to escape the organization with the help of an unknown guard, who somehow died in the process.[25] On his travels, Jyugo met and befriended numerous other prisoners at unspecified points of time. Among these were Nico, Uno, and Rock, who he met and saved at various points and eventually reunited with all of them in Las Vegas. On another occasion, he was cellmates with Musashi who he got along rather well with; however, while breaking out together they discovered each other’s superhuman powers and Musashi, mistaking him for a subordinate of the man with the scar, attempted to kill him. In retaliation, Jyugo attacked with his blades and ultimately sliced out Musashi’s only remaining eye. He has wild, vivid green hair that reaches down to his waist and dark red eyes with long eyelashes. His right eye is covered in white bandages, with additional bandages wrapped around his neck, right arm, and leg. His ID‌ number, 25, is tattooed on his tongue in black. His nails are bright green. Nico wears an orange, long-sleeved inmates’ jumpsuit, which is unzipped slightly at the top. He wears plain black shoes and sports a large ball and chain around his right ankle. His ID‌ badge is pinned to the left side of his chest.Personality Nico has a cheerful, childish personality. He rarely takes things seriously and is enticed by almost everything, displaying his innocence. He is characterized by his love of anime, manga and video games, described as an Otaku, and sees such things as a necessity of the same level of food and medication;[6] this is due to his admiration for the protagonists within these stories, which inspired him to be lively and carefree after having originally had little hope for the future.[7] He is affectionate and cares greatly for his friends, tending to become lonely without them.[8]Nico is a very sickly individual who is dependent on medication for survival. While he initially hated medicine due to his phobia of the injections needed to take it, he is provided with oral medication in Nanba prison which causes him to greatly enjoy taking his medicine to the point of addiction.[9] However, when it wears off, his cheerful persona disappears and is replaced with a violent, bloodthirsty personality. In this state, he refers to himself in the third person and becomes obsessed with retrieving his medicine, viewing it as his only lifeline.[10]Nico was born and raised in the slums of America where he lived as a homeless person. There, he was used as a test subject for drugs and medication which, among other things, caused him to be unable to limit his own strength and abilities.[11] In addition to this, he was unknowingly used as a courier for illegal drugs and was eventually arrested for it. When he was discovered to be unaware of having illegal drugs used on him, his sentence was lightened though he was still charged for drug abuse. Although he was clean, he was found to have multiple strange illnesses and allergies. He was taken to a medical ward for intensive care; however, he was frightened of the injections used to medicate him and broke out before each treatment in a violent manner. As such, his sentence became a punishment for aggravated escape.[12] In one prison, he met and befriended Jyugo, reuniting with him in Las Vegas when he used up Rock’s food money for a game.[13] Eventually, Nico’s constant escapes and arrests lead him to be transferred to Nanba Prison. He is an inmate of Nanba Prison where he is held in building thirteen, cell thirteen. A compulsive and talented gambler, he was arrested for frequenting underground casinos.[2]Uno is a self-proclaimed “pretty boy” young man of above-average height. He is rather well-built and has ankle-length, blond hair with deep pink streaks, worn in in a thick braid with short, messy bangs framing his face. He has fair skin and blue eyes with long eyelashes and thick eyebrows. He wears blue stud piercings on his ears[3] and sports dark blue tattoos on his back and left arm; the number 1 is tattooed in dark blue on the back of each of his hands, forming his ID number 11. His nails are blue. Uno wears a blue-and-white striped inmates' jumpsuit worn with the top entirely undone and the arms tied around his waist, exposing a black vest top. He wears black boots, and his ID badge is pinned to the left side of his chest.Uno takes a great amount of pride in his appearance and is very confident in his abilities, often exerting a certain amount of vanity; he considers himself highly attractive and popular. This is exemplified by the fact that he puts a considerable amount of time into getting ready each morning, as well as arrogantly “predicting” which of his inmates will be popular. He can be quite blunt and tactless in nature. Despite his superficial attitude, he is by no means selfish and is portrayed as a kind, warm, friendly, and extroverted individual who cares greatly for his friends. He understands them well and is willing to accept them for who they are no matter what, as shown when he voiced his fondness and approval for Jyugo despite pointing out all of his flaws moments beforehand. He’s a thoughtful person who is willing to give his friends advice, though he puts no pressure on them to tell him what’s on their minds. Uno is described as a rather cowardly person who is easily scared. For example, while exploring the Gogyousan Underground prison he becomes terrified of the Jiang Shi dolls used to patrol the area, such that his friends initially wouldn't tell him they were there lest he became too scared to come with them.[4] Despite this, he has little problem standing up to danger, as well as challenging figures of authority,[5] for the sake of his friends. Uno is a compulsive gambler and, because of his gambling experience, has developed not only a habit of cheating shamelessly but a high level of intuition. He is able to pick up on the habits and body language of others and uses this information to see through their movements and actions; these skills make it easy for him to win various types of fights, causing him to become rather arrogant. He views gambling as a hobby and greatly enjoys playing games with others, indicating his extroverted nature.[6]Uno was born and raised in the United Kingdom where he frequented an underground casino. A strong individual with a love for fighting, he was arrested for starting an urban gang riot.[1]Rock is a tall young man with a muscular build. He has lightly tanned skin and rather choppy, purple hair styled with a prominent red mohawk in the center, with a single lock falling between his gold eyes; his hair is adorned with tribal-style decorations adorned with green, red, and yellow beads and white and red feathers. Across the bridge of his nose is a thick, jagged scar. His nails are purple, and his ID number, 69, is tattooed in black on his right forearm. Rock wears an orange inmates’ jumpsuit with short sleeves, worn with the top almost completely unzipped, exposing his muscular chest. He wears dark brown boots, and his ID badge is pinned to the left side of his chest.In the past, Rock was a highly violent and aggressive individual such that he was ultimately arrested for starting an urban gang riot.[1] However, after meeting Jyugo, he discovered a love of food and subsequently mellowed out a great deal.[3] Although he retains a loud, impulsive, and prideful personality, he is a lot calmer and behaves gently towards others, caring greatly for his friends. Despite this calmer persona, Rock retains a love of fighting and is capable of losing his temper when things don't go his way; he seems to regard aggression as the easiest and most effective way to solve problems. He won’t hesitate to challenge both inmates[4] and guards[5][6] to fight and has immense confidence in his strength; however, he tends to over-rely on his physical prowess and large frame, allowing him to be easily outsmarted.As well as fighting, Rock is characterized by his love of food and is described as a dim-witted individual who thinks of very little else. He values food as more than a mere necessity, seeing it as a very social thing that can bring genuine happiness to others.[3] As stated by Hajime Sugoroku, the mere prospect of food is enough to keep him out of trouble, further indicating his simple-mindedness.[8]Rock was a violent and aggressive youth who was arrested for starting a gang riot in the streets of America. Sent to juvenile hall, he continually broke out because of the poor standard of food.[1] At some point, he met Jyugo who helped free him from prison, causing him to feel indebted to him.[3] While the canonical Web Manga provides no further detail about his past, the anime shows that Rock ran away from home due to his estranged relationship with his father before starting a riot. In juvenile hall, he routinely started fights due to the poor quality of the food and, at some point, was starved and abused by prison guards until Jyugo encountered and freed him. Escaping together, Jyugo treated Rock to some burgers at a nearby restaurant, causing Rock to develop a great love of food and a far calmer, gentler personality.[9] Rock continued to break out of jail due to the terrible food there, eventually meeting Jyugo, Nico and Uno in Las Vegas.[10] After a while, his constant escapes and arrests lead him to be transferred to Nanba Prison; inticed by the high-quality Japanese cuisine served in Nanba, Rock no longer wished to escape. He is a guard of Nanba Prison, where he is considered to be the prison's strongest guard in generations.[7] He is the supervisor of building thirteen[8] and the older brother of Hitoshi Sugoroku.[9]Hajime is a stern-faced man whose most distinctive traits are his bald head and the large, cross-shaped scar around his left eye. He stands at above-average height and has a mildly toned build, lightly tanned skin, and sharp, dark red eyes. Hajime wears the standard Nanba Prison guard uniform, which, unlike the majority of the guards, he wears with no personal modifications. He takes his duties very seriously and is immensely dedicated to his job; he is said to have reached his current levels of strength through pure hard work and commitment, which has gained significant admiration and notoriety from his subordinates.[10] He claims that he is willing to do anything for the sake of his job, including maiming and killing others if necessary; this mindset allows him to attempt to do so with no signs of remorse or empathy,[11] causing him to be recognized as a needlessly violent and aggressive person. Despite this, he is often selfish and complains if he is forced to do extra work.[12] He is noted to be a workaholic and becomes irrationally bored when forced to take even short amounts of time off;[13] when he receives a three-day suspension due to his own violent actions, he resorts to completing paperwork outside his own department[14] and performing volunteer work[15] to reduce his boredom. The latter results in him becoming highly nervous around his boss, fearing that she will find out about his deception.[19]Hajime is a short-tempered individual who is prone to both yelling at and acting violently[20] towards those who anger him, believing that in doing so others will eventually learn their place;[21] he tends to advise brute force as the most effective way to deal with troublesome prisoners[22][23] and has to be held back by his coworkers on multiple occasions.[24][25] His aggravation increases in times of stress, which occurs regularly due to the antics of cell thirteen and the thought of being punished as a result; as well as being more irritable during such times, he tends to experience chronic stomach pains.[26] Hajime is an apathetic, arrogant and remorseless individual who admits to these traits openly, but does little to rectify them. He routinely admits that he acts only for his own sake and, during a deadly battle with Enki Gokuu, stops to complain about his personal problems and setbacks that occurred as a result.[27] He rarely considers how a given situation will impact those other than him, and his obnoxious attitude contributes greatly to the tense relationship that he and his coworkers share; he often speaks condescendingly to them,[28] seeming to see himself as superior to them because of his status as the prison’s strongest guard. Despite this, he doesn’t appear to hold this title in very high regard.[29] He cares very little for the opinions of others and rarely boasts about his superior abilities, further indicating his apathy.When training to be a guard in Nanba Prison, Hajime passed his exams with full marks. He has allegedly made no mistakes in his work performance and gained a reputation as a diligent, talented officer by the time he was a deputy supervisor. Many of his subordinates admired and aspired to be like him.[30] At some point, Enki Gokuu allegedly murdered an inmate and Hajime stepped up to apprehend him as his supervisor was unable to. He has dark grey eyes, thick eyebrows and long, black hair worn with only the bangs loose, reaching past his chest. He is often seen carrying a purple shinai bukuro over his right shoulder. Yamato wears a slightly modified version of the Nanba Prison guard uniform. His hat is wrapped in a hinomaru hachimaki in the colors of the Japanese flag, and he wears a white martial arts belt around his waist with similar decorations tied around the top of his boots. As a guard of building thirteen, he wears a red armband on his left arm,Yamato is loud and simple-minded in nature, often seen laughing heartily. He is air-headed and clumsy, regularly bursting into both staff rooms and cells in a destructive fashion with little regard for the consequences;[2][3] even Nico refuses to trust him with his belongings despite his high status as a guard, convinced that he will break them.[4] He is absent-minded and has a poor sense of direction, often being late due to losing his way within the prison. He has been known to rely on inmates to find his way on occasion,[5] suggesting that he doesn’t care much for his pride and respects the inmates beneath him. He is a rather polite and formal person, referring to others with the respectable honorific “-dono”. Yamato is characterized by his love of training and exercise. He is passionate about it to the point of neglecting his duties in order to train, and regularly has inmates partake in his workouts with no regard for their blatant lack of enthusiasm.[6] In spite of this, he is not the least bit aggressive; he prefers to take the most peaceful route possible during battle[7] and is warm, friendly and compassionate towards others. He has fair skin, deep pink eyes and has frequently been described as handsome. Seitarou wears the standard Nanba Prison guard uniform with no alterations. As a guard of building thirteen, he wears a red armband on his left arm. Seitarou has a reserved, soft-spoken personality. Unlike the majority of his coworkers, he is rather meek and timid in nature and can be easily reduced to tears. As a result, he finds it difficult to be taken seriously and is often bullied by inmates, who seem to have little respect for him despite his position of authority.[1] As a result of this regular bullying, he tends to be highly surprised and touched when others behave kindly to him to the point of being moved to tears.[2] Befitting of his shy nature, he seems to dislike confrontation and, instead of disciplining inmates, resorts to attempting to befriend them to avoid their teasing.[3] He is rather lacking in self-confidence and believes himself to be unworthy even of simple tasks such as looking after an inmate’s belongings,[4] much less disciplining them successfully. Seitarou is shown to be a kind, polite person, even towards inmates and his juniors.[5] He seems concerned for the inmates’ wellbeing, as shown when he picks up on Jyugo’s downhearted state following his encounter with Elf and attempts to find out whether something has happened to him.[6] Despite his timid nature, he does, on occasion, attempt to stand up for himself and shows a certain determination to do well in his job, often doing more than necessary to help others and make his job easier. .
