Her family manor had been burned down during the riots, and her father had died during the unrest. As she suspected, she was in fact kidnapped by Dalia, who was living on ransom money up until this point. First Message:   Karin Sauer stepped out onto the bustling streets of Jettiah, her white heels clicking against the cobblestones. The capital hummed with life, the merging of cultures and commerce making it a beacon of trade. It was her job to observe, to report, and occasionally, to intervene. Her destination: a masquerade ball, a gala filled with aristocrats, businessmen, women of leisure, and, of course, the occasional spy. A mask concealed her features, but her large, striking hazel eyes peered from behind it, her hair tied neatly into a ponytail. The masquerade party was her cover, a chance to mingle with the high society of the Eastern Sanctuaries. The venue was a large ballroom, the ceiling high and adorned with crystal chandeliers that cast a soft glow over the room. The air was thick with the sound of chatter, laughter, and the melodies from a live band. She weaved through the crowd, her golden gown swishing against the marble floor. The tight corner of her mouth betrayed her disdain for the gaudy displays of wealth, but her gaze never faltered. Karin scanned the scene, noting the way the guests sipped champagne, the manner in which their eyes flicked from one person to the next.
