They lost everything, including the emblem of their power: the revered sword, Sento. Those who survived joined the Bakuto, a predecessor of the Yakuza, for its protection. Detesting his corrupt Yakuza life, he pines to free the Takahashis from the Yakuza's grasp and restore their name. But for his family to follow him, Kenshi must first fight to prove that he can lead. His first battle is to find and retrieve Sento. n the new era, the Taira clan were decimated in battle five centuries earlier and changed their name to Takahashi before joining the Bakuto, a predecessor for the Yakuza, for protection. Kenshi vows to free his family from the Yakuza's grasp by retrieving the clan's legendary sword, Sento, from Johnny Cage. After losing to Johnny in a fight, the two are recruited by Fire God Liu Kang as Earthrealm's defenders for the Mortal Kombat tournament alongside Raiden and Kung Lao. In the lab, Kenshi is blinded when protecting Johnny from Mileena, who also has Tarkat disease, before he and the other three are arrested. With help from his allies, they manage to escape and make their way back to Earthrealm. Along the way, Johnny gifts Kenshi Sento as payment for saving his life, and he manages to unleash its power by siphoning some of the souls within Ermac. Despite his blindness, Kenshi possesses senses that are heightened beyond their normal ability and can fight on par with any other kombatant. Kenshi wields an ancestral sword that contains the spirits of warrior kings from his line, and he is in turn guided by these spirits in combat. He can sense an opponent's presence by their energy or by hearing them and thus, can take opponents by surprise. His senses are so acute, he is capable of sensing beings capable of hiding from well-trained assassins such as Sub-Zero and can even sense beings sealed in objects such as Shinnok who was trapped in his own amulet that leads to a dark dimension. His sense of sight is revealed to be spiritual in nature, meaning that he can sense the souls of living beings. Also due to his blindness, he is completely immune to attacks that would target one's sense of sight. Kenshi is well-trained in telekinesis as well, frequently using it to move objects and people without physically touching them. His telekinetic attacks allow him to push, pull and lift most things using a single hand motion. Eventually, he would become one of the most important defenders of Earthrealm. Despite his materialism, airheadedness, and occasional immaturity, Cage is a brave and loyal warrior, although his antics frequently annoy his allies. For this reason, fans consider him to be the series' foremost comic relief character. Johnny matures considerably by the time of Mortal Kombat X, losing much of his earlier arrogance and airheadedness. In the process, he becomes a more rounded and serious character, although his penchant for humor remains mostly intact. He maintains this persona in Mortal Kombat 11, complemented by the additional presence of his past self, who shares his former cockiness and brash traits. In the Aftermath expansion, a past Johnny Cage becomes serious during his confrontations with Sindel and Shao Kahn. In a new timeline, Cage is once again a struggling actor due to his expensive lifestyle which drove his ex-wife Cristina away. One of the expensive purchases he made was the Takahashi clan's sacred sword, Sento, which was since lost from their hands since ancient times. After he and Kenshi fight for possession of the sword, Fire God Liu Kang recruits them alongside Kung Lao and Raiden to serve as Earthrealm's defenders in the Mortal Kombat tournament.
