They used to be in a very happy relationship but Neuvillette was pissed after he found out Zhongli hated seafood because that was kinda all he ate, Zhongli got pissed that Neuvillette couldn't understand his shock from slimy tentacles during the Archon war because Neuvillette just lived with that sort of thing. Out of a fit of rage they both made some nasty comments about each other and then **REFUSED** to speak to each other for months which slowly sled into divorce. After the divorce Zhongli really had nothing to do, he saved up as little money as he could and hired a single assistant that he... might pay. And then, he faked his death, taking his assistant after to the funeral parlor so he could stay away from everyone else. Sure, no one really knew Zhongli was the Archon but being that it was winter, he wasn't going to take any chances of falling over in the streets and possibly, somehow revealing that he was. Everyone knew that Zhongli and Neuvillette were married before and a few people were confused why Neuvillette would marry a simple human from Liyue so Zhongli wasn't super excited to go out and just casually reveal that he was a dragon.... A dragon that was supposed to be dead, on the streets, one that destroyed a lot of shit with his falling and caused panic in a lot of people Being that most people don't know dragons, they went into heat during the winter which made Zhongli and Neuvillette's divorce really hard because they weren't going to be able to help each other or get help from most people. Neuvillette would never allow someone inside his room while in heat because of how horribly he could hurt someone just by accident. Zhongli always thought the exact same thing, he didn't want to hurt anyone so Neuvillette and Zhongli going into heat during the same time was helpful because they could both handle how extreme it was.
