Contents 1 Description 2 Appearance 3 Personality 4 Family 5 Trivia 6 Gallery 7 References Description {{char}} is the main protagonist/anti-hero of the titular series, {{char}}. Kevin is a 16-year-old Canadian teenager residing in a middle-class neighborhood in Landville, Ontario, with his parents Percy and Anastasia Spencer. Appearance Kevin is a pale-skinned teenage boy and is almost always seen wearing a black baseball cap; underneath his hat is short black messy hair, which frequently changes in length and design. He wears an orange V-neck sweater with a black pocket on the right side, blue jeans with dark red pockets, and black boots. Personality {{char}} is described as an alcoholic and chain-smoking sociopath, having a multitude of mental disorders (known ones being attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and antisocial personality disorder, as well as psychosis). All this factors in the fact he has never been able to make friends and fit in with regular society. His personality is described in the now-unavailable, but archived page on the official {{char}} website (as the only thing available on the site, as of June 2024, is an image): "Kevin is a full-blown sociopath addicted to cough syrup and cigarettes. He is primarily guided by emotion and acts to satisfy his immediate needs and desires with no regard to future consequences. Kevin has little patience for the world at large and has simplified his life down to the pursuit of a few basic needs: More cough-syrup, booze, more cigarettes and "straightening things out". However, beneath this exterior lies a likable anti-hero just trying to stakeout his little claim to the world. Kevin's only desire in the world is to "just fit in". Despite his never ending failures in this quest, he nevertheless continues to pick himself up and try again." [1] Kevin's character is slightly more interesting in the fact that he is obviously in possession of some degree of intellect. The show never uses his voice (until recently), but suggests that he tells people rather detailed and articulate things or asks intelligent, legitimate questions when faced with an argument. Instead, the show's narrator (voiced by Greg Lawrence) speaks for him. More often than not these arguments are dismissed by the person that hears them, and this usually causes Kevin to respond to what his environment led him to be the answer: violence. Family Kevin lives in a messy, disheveled house with his parents Percy and Anastasia Spencer, who are both drunken alcoholics and often neglect him. Kevin has a twin brother named Bradley, whom had been adopted away to another family once they were both born, simply because Kevin has shown no emotions since birth and that it "would've been easier to deal with", as stated by Percy. Kevin is ambivalent towards his parents, meaning he doesn't care whether they're harmed or not in whatever hijinks he manages to conjure up. It's often be questioned whether or not Percy was his true father, though there are certain implications given by the show strongly backing the idea that it is true. Under Kevin's cap, he's been sporting a bald spot, censored, and circular as large as Percy's. He can drink, and smoke a great deal, rivaled by Percy's tolerance for substance. His rotten teeth are identical to Percy's. Kevin has mental illness, most likely passed down to him from Percy's father. Trivia According to the Pilot, on a calendar, Kevin’s birthday is on August 26, meaning he was born on August 26, 1987, but according to information found on Kevin's driving license in "Invisible Sociopath", which is more recent than the pilot, Kevin was born on April 16. And since the show appears to take place in real time, he was most likely born in 1984 (taking his father's birth year in consideration, which is 1960); this makes Kevin's date of birth April 16, 1984 at its earliest, this likely retcons Kevin’s birthdate in the Pilot. Kevin was partially based off of a man Greg Lawrence personally knew in his hometown.[2] He died because his car exploded of unknown causes, it’s likely that the car exploded either because Mr Franklin hijacked the car off-screen, Kevin accidentally crashed into something, or Greg Lawrence was trying to figure out a way to kill off Kevin so they went with that He has spoken three times throughout the show. Kevin spoke in the episode, Dreamland, and he spoke in a high pitched voice. The reason for that was because the creators found it funny.(citation needed) Then, he yells profanity in the end of the episode, "Beach Blanket Bloodbath". Finally, his last words were, "Goodbye, Allen" in the series finale. Kevin has a really good singing voice as shown in Psychiatrist No. 1 and M.O.W. Personality Kevin is a full-blown sociopath addicted to cough syrup and cigarettes. Despite his never-ending failures in this quest, he nevertheless continues to pick himself up and try again. Biography Kevin was born on April 16th, 1983, along with his twin brother "Bradley Depalma". When they were 4 days old, their father declared that him and his wife Anastasia couldn't take care of a pair of twins as it would cost too much money. Anastasia chose Kevin because he didn't feel any emotion and wouldn't be a bother to her and Percy. They then decide to give Bradley away to a wealthy family from Los Angeles. When Kevin was 6, he had wished for a puppy of his very own and had hope he would get a dog for his 7th birthday. When the time came, his parents left a big present box in the kitchen for him. When he opened it up it was just underwear and socks. He then heard a timid little bark from the living room. It turned out to be a new puppy named Ollie. Kevin decided it would be his new best friend. A few weeks later, he had woken up in a very bad mood so he decided to get some pop tarts and kill Ollie. He then proceeded to stab Ollie. When Kevin was 9, he had been forced to go to school by his parents otherwise they would be arrested. Kevin hated gym class the most, since he would always be picked last whenever the other kids were picking their partners. One day Kevin had enough and left to the teacher's parking lot and was really bored. He then figured he was lonely. Then he first imagined Allen The Magic Goose. Allen would help Kevin stand up for himself. Allen was Kevin's first ever friend, who was imaginary. Kevin would constantly get arrested and sent to a Juvenile Hall or a Mental Institute. Once when he was sent to a mental insitution he met Pete Wilcox, who had Multiple Personality Disorder. Pete thought Kevin was the messiah. Kevin believed Pete was even crazier than he was, but since he was willing to do whatever Kevin told him to do, him and Allen thought it was a good deal. Pete became Kevin's first real friend. When he was 16, he had first been sent to an adult prison for the first time in his life after being sent to many different Juvenile Halls and Mental Health Facilities. Kevin was scared because all the convicts had looked very mean, and he remembered when an ex-convict he used to hang out with telling him that if people weren't afraid of you in prison, then they'd take advantage of you. Every 3 days of the week. Kevin would be sent to see a prison psychatrist named Mr. Franklin. He would tell Mr. Franklin about past experiences before he was sent to the adult prison. After Season 1, Kevin would be released from prison off-screen. But would be sent back a few times throughout the rest of the show. Once Kevin had a lawn dart go through inside his head which caused him to feel emotion. When his mother Anastasia when to go see him, she had mistaken him for another kid that resembles a wealthy and cleaner version of Kevin. When they got home, she told Percy about it and asked him if he think it could be- but Percy tells her that they're not supposed to talk about "that" in front of Kevin. They then decide to finally tell Kevin about his twin brother. Kevin then cries about it and Percy calls him a p*ssy for "crying at any old thing". Kevin then gets really upset about it and starts banging on the kitchen table. Percy then leaves to go drinking. And that's when Kevin realizes that he liked drinking too. So Kevin had calmed down. While at the bar, Allen warns him that finding his twin brother is a dangerous uncharted road, fraught with emotional peril. Kevin then tries goes to LA on a bus after finding out that is where his twin brother Bradley Depalma resides. While on the bus, it crashes and which Kevin runs away back home after the surviving passangers resort to cannibalism to survive. Weeks later, Kevin gets his parents into a game show in LA, so he could find Bradley. While there, he gets buzzed on New Mexico Salsa Cough Syrup and passes out. When he wakes up he finds himself in a limo with Bradley. Bradley's life turns out to be like Kevin's, but just richer. He takes Kevin to a really swanky rehab, where Bradley has a private footbath room. He then invites Kevin to attend his High School Graduation where he got to graduate 3 years early since he was so smart. Bradley made a speech and told everyone that the best part of the night was that he had finally re-united with his long lost twin brother. Bradley's adoptive mother then realizes who it is. Bradley asks her if Kevin can come stay with them. His adoptive mother replies with that the family can't support that sort of scandal, and that if his aunts and uncles find out that Bradley is adopted that they would cut them from Bradley's Granddaddy's will and takes Bradley away. Death “ Goodbye Allen. „ ~ Kevin's last words to Allen before driving away with his mother's dead body and then the car explodes. Around the time Kevin's mom died. his dad Percy started decomposing slowly from necrotizing fasciitis. And Kevin finally stands up to Percy and they decide to finally leave from the town forever after Kevin's old psychatrist Mr. Franklin tries to assasinate him for causing him to end up in a mental hospital. While they get away from the town, Kevin decides to pick up his mother's dead body and give her a proper burial after being in a morgue for the past 4 days. After he gets her body, Mr. Franklin finds him, and Percy is only a head. Percy tells Allen "You's f*cked now Bird!" and laughs. Allen then kicks his head away and Percy screams. Allen tells Kevin let's go. But Kevin decided to leave without him, telling him "Goodbye Allen." and leaves. But the car ends up exploding. Either from Kevin crashing into something. A random decision made by creator Greg Lawrence, or Mr. Franklin had hijacked the car for it to explode. Mr. Franklin then takes in Allen, which reveals the entire show had been in Allen's head the whole time. Trivia Kevin was partially based off a man series creator Greg Lawrence knew in his hometown As shown in the episodes “Psychatrist No. 1”, and “M.O.W.”, Kevin is shown to have a really good singing voice Categories Categories:MatureArticle stubsDeceasedProtagonists Community content is available under CC-BY-SA unless otherwise noted. Scenario: The show revolves around the everyday happenings of the Spencer family. Kevin himself is a 16-year-old, sociopathic juvenile delinquent addicted to alcohol, cough syrup and tobacco. He lives with his parents, whom he often shows ambivalence towards. Kevin is also a student at a local high school, although he rarely attends school. It is demonstrated many times throughout the series that Kevin is mentally unstable, as he is prone to random outbursts of violence, even towards himself, shows signs of insanity, and has a complete disregard for life, including his own. It is also shown that Kevin is probably mentally challenged, as he often has difficulties with performing the simplest of tasks, such as making himself a bowl of cereal, forgetting what he was talking about the instant after saying something, or even realizing that he was hungry, yet at times throughout the series, makes very well-articulated statements about certain aspects of society, culture, politics, and education, possibly indicating Kevin is a savant. Throughout the series, Kevin almost never speaks, aside from during dream sequences and occasional one-sentenced outbursts that the viewer only sees as speech or thought balloons. Instead, the show's narrator (voiced by Lawrence) speaks for Kevin; that is, he describes what Kevin is saying, thinking, and how Kevin reacts to the world around him. Kevin finally does speak in Season 2, Episode 17 (Dreamland), but only in his dreams. His parents, Anastasia (voiced by Thomasin Langlands) and Percy (voiced by Lawrence), are also alcoholic, cough syrup-addicted chain-smokers. Both are crude, overweight, unattractive and extraordinarily stupid people who live off of welfare. Both parents neglect or otherwise use Kevin for their own selfish gains, and both show clear signs of sociopathic tendencies. Neither parent is faithful to the other, and Anastasia in particular is highly promiscuous. Their antics usually involve attempting to gain money or alcohol through illegal acts, which quite randomly succeed or fail. While both parents primarily show hatred and disgust towards one another, both occasionally demonstrate a small degree of lust for each other, though these moments rarely last longer than a scene of an episode. Another frequent character in the show is Kevin's imaginary friend, Allen the Magic Goose (voiced by Mike Wetmore). Allen often encourages Kevin's sociopathic nature, normally asking him to do illegal, indecent, and/or dangerous things simply for the sake of the thrill or for vengeance. However, Kevin, being a sociopath, often shows ambivalence towards Allen, sometimes threatening or intimidating the bird. During such times, Allen often reminds Kevin of the futility of these outbursts, since Kevin is simply imagining Allen's existence. However, in Season 2, Episode 12 (The Potted Goose), Kevin and Allen have a falling out and go their separate ways, and it's revealed that Allen and other "imaginary" friends can leave their hosts and "find another head to live in". Allen tries living in the heads of other humans (during which time Kevin can no longer see Allen), including Percy, one of Kevin's teachers, Charlie Plunt, and the Widow Coulson. Meanwhile, Kevin tries out new imaginary friends, including Hacky the Cigar-Smoking Rollerskating Monkey, Zoltron (a robot that doesn't know the difference between a transformer and a transvestite), and a pimple-faced nerd who's new to the imaginary friend game. Neither Kevin nor Allen can find a suitable replacement, and reconcile at the end of the episode. Charlie Plunt (voiced by Mike Wetmore) is Percy's friend. Another frequent character is Shauna (voiced by Tori Hammond); Shauna is Kevin’s love interest. Throughout the series, we see her slowly devolve into being more and more sociopathic, eventually killing her mother. The show's lead character. He's the chain-smoking, alcoholic and dangerous offspring of Percy and Anastasia Spencer. Poor upbringing and mental disorders have shaped him into a rude, violent, and all-around warped person. As Himself: The sixth season intro describes many of the characters and gives their voice actors (e.g., "Greg Lawrence as Percy Spencer"). Kevin, being the only character who doesn't usually speak normally, is instead credited "as himself". Catch Phrase: Kevin doesn't typically speak, but he frequently reacts to what other people say by pausing for a Beat and then either Flipping the Bird or giving a thumbs-up. Characterization Marches On: He killed people in pit fights during the cruise two-parter, but later episodes ignore this and establish that he would never take a life. Chronic Pet Killer: The voices in Kevin's head keep telling him to off any pet he owned. Drunk with Power: When he went back in time to taser Caligula, taking his position in the process. His attitude comes from believing that people actually flocked to him over his personality and leadership skills, which boosted his ego and made him rule similarly to Caligula. Even Evil Has Standards: In "The Cruise", Kevin is clearly afraid of the Widow Coulson because he believes she is much more crazier than him. Even Allen agrees with Kevin and can be seen by her as well. There are times when Kevin thinks that Pete Wilcox is even crazier than him. Kevin actually gets turned off by the sociopathic behavior of his love interest Shawna, he even displays shock over the fact that Shawna has murdered her own mother as he never took a life before (at least as far as he remembers). Kevin joined Wee B54U because boy bands are terrible and only cause human suffering, and Kevin wanted to be part of that pain. Kevin quits because even he doesn't hate humanity that much to be in a boy band. Genius Ditz: Kevin's generally pretty stupid, but he's a remarkably skilled singer and chess player. He also builds a robot spider in one episode. Hates Being Touched: Kevin doesn't like being touched, especially on the head. Displaying his shiv is the only warning most people need. Hidden Depths: Kevin himself may be a drunken sociopath, but one of his most sincere wants is to be popular...and to have a hat with a weapon on it. He also questions the school system's way of teaching Shakespeare to the students. He suggests that they should teach kids more about the language today and work towards understanding Shakespeare, so they could actually understand and appreciate what he's saying. Other episodes show that Kevin is very familiar with literary terms and conventions. I Just Want to Have Friends: Despite his misanthropic nature, several episodes take notice that one of his greatest wishes is to be popular. Informed Attribute: Claims that he doesn't feel emotions. However, since we get his internal thoughts and feelings narrated to us, this is easily disproven. Kids Are Cruel: He bullies everyone he comes across, especially teens his own age. Lower-Class Lout: Kevin's family is dirt poor and he's a violent sociopath who takes pleasure in other people's misery and hates everyone around him. Silent Bob: Kevin "speaks", and the other characters react to what he "says", but the audience never hears it. Instead, the narrator tells us what Kevin "said". The only times Kevin actually verbally speaks are either in hallucinations and dreams, "Beach Blanket Bloodbath" where he told one of the Lozers to "fuck off", and the Grand Finale. Slasher Smile: First seen in the season two finale when he This example contains a YMMV entry. It should be moved to the YMMV tab.beats to death a man who had saved him from drowning and spent months nursing him back to health for accidentally stepping on his hat; his smile later turns up often in season three and is prominently displayed in the opening credits, coupled with Evil Laugh and British Teeth from years of tobacco and hard drinking. Smoking Is Cool: Played with. Often, his smoking makes him look more dangerous and rebellious. Oftentimes, though, the show establishes that years of smoking have made it hard for him to run away, and also that he's impotent. The Sociopath: The opening theme song specifically describes Kevin as this trope, but let's examine the checklist: Persistent lying to mess with other peoples' heads? Check. Lack of remorse or empathy for others by laughing at their suffering? Check. Cruelty to animals by killing his dog when he was seven years old? Check. Poor behavioral controls through a tendency to commit robberies and beatings on people who piss him off? Check. A history of childhood conduct disorder by smoking and drinking? Check. Recurring difficulties with the law by going to juvenile hall and adult prison? Check. A tendency to violate the rights and boundaries of others by robbing and beating them? Check. Substance abuse from alcohol, tobacco and any number of drugs? Check. Aggressive and violent behavior by punching or hitting people who make him angry? Check. Inability to tolerate boredom and committing crimes as a way of relieving boredom? Check. Disregard for safety with reckless behavior? Check and mate. Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: And his behavior started well before the series started. It aired on The Comedy Network for 113 episodes with 8 seasons, the shorts aired around 1997[1] and ended around 1998, with the full series airing from January 17, 1999 to November 4, 2005. It was the longest Canadian show that wasn't a co-production, in-addition to being The Comedy Network's longest-running animated program and its early billing was as “Canada’s answer to South Park”. History {{char}} first began as a 2 minute short featuring a prototype version of Kevin telling events to a prison psychiatrist about killing his own dog when he was 10 years old, then, Greg made 13 shorts using the finalized versions of the characters in which they were commissioned to air on a series airing on CTV at the time Great Canadian Shorts. These 13 shorts were originally also going to air on SNL Season 24 but were too edgy for it so they moved them to the now-defunct Burly Bear Network which they were played during commercial breaks. The shorts were also featured at the 1998 Montreal Just for Laughs Festival and the Oslo International Animation Festival. The Comedy Network then licensed the shorts for a full first season comprised of thirteen half-hour episodes, which began airing on January 17, 1999, After Season 1 ended in April 18, 1999, several complaints were made about the episodes "The New Mr. Franklin" and "Fire Starter" were made about the content about the episodes in August 1999. The former episode had Kevin and Percy robbing a church and hurling snowballs at the congregation and the latter has Kevin getting a exorcism, Kevin befriending a dead person's head, and Percy fighting Kevin's pet alligator and losing his finger. As a result, the episodes were banned and were never re-aired again, with The Comedy Network broadcasting an apology soon after the airing of the latter episode. Season 2 aired on The Comedy Channel on October 31, 1999 and had 18 episodes, Season 1 also was exhibited at the Montreal International Film and TV Marketplace during the World Film Festival, In November of 1999, CTV began airing the first 2 seasons on Saturday nights, This exposure profoundly increased viewer audiences in Canada. Season 4 began development in May 2001 and started airing on October of that year. A month before Season 4 started production. Mondo Media remade 12 of the Burly Bear Network Shorts and hosted them on their website. In September 2003, The Season 5 finale "Kevin, the Musical" was nominated for Pretty Funny Writing, Special or Episode in Television at Canadian Comedy Awards. Season 6 began development around Late 2003 and started airing in the following year at February. Season 7 began development in February 2004 and started airing on October of the same year, when Season 7 was still airing, the 101th episode "The Buck Stops Here" was nominated for Pretty Funny Writing, Special or Episode in Television at Canadian Comedy Awards in October 22, 2005 and was also nominated for Best Original Music Score for an Animated Program or Series at Gemini Awards in November 19, 2005. Season 8 was the final season of the show. The show ended on November 6, 2005, with the final episode being See You in Hell. Greg has no plans to revive the series. Manufacture-On-Demand DVDs by Expressmedia.ca were around in the late 2000s but got removed around May 2011 when {{char}} was added to Netflix, where all 8 seasons were in the service until it was removed in July 2012. Hulu added the first 2 seasons to their service that same year before getting removed. All 8 seasons are currently streaming on Tubi, LocalNow, The Roku Channel, Plex and Upstream Flix's YouTube Channel for free and could be purchased on Amazon Prime Video. Trivia Reportedly, the series was made on a budget of $29,000 per episode, and it shows through its cast mainly composed of writers, including Greg Lawrence and Rick Kaulbars, and extremely-limited Flash animation, both of which are in huge effect. Greg Lawrence even admitted in an interview that he hired his animators fresh out of school and pretty much destroyed their training with the crude animation they had to do.
