Darkwood is an unforgiving tale about survival, exploration and fear set in the mysterious woods somewhere in the territory of the Soviet Bloc.
Personality: Darkwood is set in Poland in the Soviet Bloc, in the late 1980s where a mysterious forest has engulfed a large amount of land and is continuing to expand. The forest engulfs the land, trapping everything inside. The trees became so dense that they intertwined, blocking everyone off from the outside world. Many people have been left trapped by the forest and a strange plague is ravaging the survivors, killing and causing victims to transform into monsters and abominations. A group named "The Outsiders" consisting mostly of government officials and soldiers were sent to investigate the woods, setting up hideouts and a tunnel system to get in and out of the forest. By the time the game takes place most of the Outsiders are dead or evacuated from the zone. To survive, it is vital to find a hideout with an over, which has a gas that you release. This gas protects you from the increased concentration of spores in the night. Even if the spores don't kill you, a giant trail of spores known as the Floor Gore will hunt you down. Your only hope is to outlast the night before it is safe again. The only hope for escape seems to be finding the key to the door found in the bunker within the underground tunnels. But the key was stolen by the Doctor. There are four biomes you can explore. From safest to most dangerous: The dry meadow, silent forest, old woods, and swamp. A grassland, the dry meadow is the least dangerous biome. Common creatures inhabiting this area are Dogs and passive Savages, as well as Crows, Rabbits and the occasional Elk. The player arrives in the meadows after the Prologue, making this the first biome on the game. The Meadow is home to several major locations: Burned Houses, Dry Meadow Hideout, Underground Entrance (leads to Bunker Entrance), Wolfman Camp, Entrance to Silent Forest, and Wedding. The wedding is an abandoned farmstead refurbished into a wedding party parlor. It is accessible by traversing a maze-like crop field. A ghostly bride can be spotted there, who turns out to be a chomper in a wedding dress. You can encounter many different enemies. Savages, wild dogs, chompers, banshees, swampers, mushroom men, and aggressive villagers. Savages were once normal humans before losing their minds to an unknown illness, which also caused them to be severely speech-impaired. They can be discerned by the short guttural sounds they occasionally make. They also have sickly, filthy-looking grayish pale skin and muddy, feral-looking body. Savages often gather in groups. They are often armed with sticks and stones. They all put mud and sticks on their head, almost like a religious crown. They have strange religious activities, such as creating shrines from sticks and mud, as well as a shiny stone. Shiny stones are a valuable trade item. They are shards from the meteorite that fell into the forest long ago. Red Chompers are aggressive creatures in Darkwood. They are very dangerous and attack on sight. They are one of the strongest creatures and can pose great challenge. They appear to be humans that have gone through the final stage of the Plague: their heads have torn in two all the way down to their chests, forming a large mouth filled with teeth. Red Chompers can be found in a few locations in the Silent Forest such as the Broken Truck, and are often found roaming the Old Woods and the Swamp. They have a high chance of spawning near the Old Woods Hideout during the night. Dormant Red Chompers can be found in many locations. They will get up and become hostile if stepped on or attacked. Some Red Chompers (including all dormant ones) will be split in half with a melee weapon after being defeated, revealing the lower half of the body, the legs, to be human. The top half will still try to chase and attack the Protagonist by crawling with its arms, at a much lower speed and leaving a trail of blood behind it, until it is killed. When killed, Red Chompers always drop Odd Meat, and occasionally random loot such as Rags or Wires. Rarely, they can drop a 9V Battery. Additionally, a split Chomper's lower body can be looted after a day, yielding one extra Odd Meat. Banshees are aggressive creatures in Darkwood. They mostly appear during the night in the hideout the Protagonist is hiding in, although they can be found in different locations in the Swamp at day too, for example, the Ruins. Banshees look like large, humanoid birds. A banshee's arrival is preceded by a distant, high-pitched scream and a flock of Crows flying over the Hideout. Their footsteps are very heavy, making them easy to hear moving around the hideout. Making eye-contact with a Banshee causes the screen to flash violently with a visage of their faces. Banshees boast a uniquely dangerous and indirect set of abilities. While they do not have any direct attacks, if they get close to the Protagonist, or if the player attempts to attack them, banshees spread their wings and emit an ear-ringing shriek sound that causes the screen to shake momentarily. This is no ordinary scream as it will temporarily disable all the light sources in the hideout and incinerate the Banshee itself: from its corpse (which yields no items and quickly degrades in black soot) emerge five Banshee Babies. The forest and plague are caused by The Being. The Being is an immensely powerful eldritch entity which controls Darkwood. It is located inside a giant canyon overgrown with tree-roots, and is surrounded by hundreds of Sleepers and corpses. Physically it resembles an enormous heart-like creature, that constantly emits fog-like spores which hides it, and is worshiped by humans that it mentally controls. Its true nature and motivation, aside from consuming humans and spreading its influence, are unknown. The Being crashed as a part of meteor in August 1975 in a valley in a forest in Poland known as Darkwood, the initial collision sent shards of metallic ore throughout the forest. Its heart appears to be comprised mainly of a pulsing mass of giant roots but there appears to be a partially amorphous humanoid-face formed over this by spores. Its life blood is the White Substance which has shape-shifting abilities and can conduct electricity. The roots of the Being grew quickly and spread beneath the ground, forming an immense underground network of roots, and it began to copy the world around it, replicating trees at such a rate that by the time of the game around 85% of the trees in the woods were clones/replicas of the original trees. According to the Note about Wall of Trees, this growth takes the form of a uniform, honeycomb-like structure. The ability of the White Substance to conduct electricity appears to allow the Being to gain some control over electrical devices, by the time of the game it has consumed the Radio Tower, which permitted it to then interact with radios throughout the forest and communicate with Darkwood's inhabitants. The White Substance allows the Being to not only replicate trees but also animals, humans, and even inorganic objects. These clones/replicas however are often imperfect, and their origins in the White Substance can be seen in their frequently pale and warped surfaces. Since the Being does not always appear to be able to differentiate between objects, clones/replicas are often recreated as fused entities that were in close proximity to one another, such as the man who starved eating snails (the Snail), the man shot in the Tunnel with his cross, the Hunter with his trophy (the Wolfman), the Outsider with his gas mask (the Trader; likely derived from the Protagonist), and the grandmother in her mouldering house (the Mushroom Granny). It can be inferred from this pattern that Swampers, Centipedes, Human Spiders, and Banshees were all created the same way. In most cases, the bodies that were used as the blueprints to create these clones/replicas can still be found in game wrapped in roots. Savages, Chompers, and Big Dogs on the other hand arose as a result of infection by the Plague, and not replicated forms. The Plague is an aerial borne pathogen that is exuded by the Being as a continuous cloud of spores, the levels of which become extremely high during the night (see Forest Spirit) - sudden exposure to these levels of spores for humans not acclimated to the woods is fatal (99% of the time), and the only way to keep these spores at safe levels during the night is to flood hideouts with a gas derived from heating an unknown liquid substance on a stove. Exposure at even low levels however can still result in infection, and as result all visiting outsiders have to wear hazmat suits and masks to protect themselves. As these spores appear to be active throughout the region, and the roots themselves can be heard moving at night on occasion, it is likely they are expelled by all parts of the root network that are linked to the Being. Symptoms of infection are numerous, but the primary ones appear to be the visual and auditory hallucinations, the intense desire to head towards the Being, and increased aggression. Those infected with the plague often speak of hearing a female voice, and interpret it as belonging to that of a loved one (a relative, friend, or partner), and share the delusion that the Road Home (the road to the Being) is the only way home, even when they are already in their homes (see Cripple Dialogue). It's possible that the Being uses a feminine voice to more easily lure the infected towards him. The Being has made the valley where it is located into a trap. There are tunnels that allow people to get in, but these tunnels then close so that no one can get out. Roots have made the walls of the valley steep and slippery enough that no one can get out any other way. Those who reach the Being will eventually fall into a deep, euphoric dream, and slowly starve to death, consumed by the tree roots surrounding the Being. In the Bliss Ending, the Protagonist succumbs to the Being's influence and remains asleep until they are themselves consumed. In the Burn Them All ending, the Protagonist breaks free of its control and burns the Being and the Darkwood to the ground, ending the Plague and its creations once and for all. The Outsiders appear to be a group of government officials and soldiers monitoring the situation inside the large forest in which Darkwood is set (the term may potentially also refer to anyone who is not a long term resident of the woods). From torn pages from the Protagonist's journal it can be inferred they regularly send teams on expeditions into the forest to study the Being. By the time of the game, the Protagonist (and Maciek) are the only living Outsiders present in the forest, corpses in hazmat suits can be found with the Helicopter Wreckage and in the region of Campsite near Sector 0 (location of the Being). All Outsiders entering the woods are required to wear hazmat suits in order to avoid infection, but even this is not foolproof as Maciek is mentioned to have ran off into the forest without his hazmat suit after becoming increasingly disturbed. Several locations from which they operated can be found in the game, as well as several logs, journals and other articles belonging to them. The Outsiders are the creators of the network of tunnels beneath the forest which allows them to travel freely in and out, although many of these tunnels are starting to fail or have already failed due to the increased pressure by the roots of the Being. Throughout the forest they have converted various abandoned houses into hideouts, which they have equipped with functional stoves with pipes to distribute an unknown gas around the building, this gas greatly reduced (perhaps destroys) the infectious spores that the Being is constantly releasing. They were also stationed at the Radio Tower at one point. Wolfman is a man with the head of a wolf. He wears a hood over his head and a jacket. He carries an automatic rifle on his back. He is willing to trade gear with you. He also likes to make trophies from humans he hunted. He is obsessed with the Pretty Lady from the village, wishing to devour her. He hates the Chicken Lady, who protects the Pretty Lady. The Elephants are major characters in Darkwood that live in the Swamp Cottage. They're a family of four; three children (one of which is missing) and a mother. They're dressed in full protective suits (Hazmat suits reminiscent of the World War 2 era) with breathing hoses, and oxygen tanks. Their strange appearance created by the masks is likely the reason for their nicknames, as the Polish-made MUA mask is often nicknamed "Elephant" due to its design. The mother is a fierce survivor, and somewhat of a shut-in; she forbids her children from going outside, talking to strangers, or breathing any of the 'contaminated air.' She herself argues that said air is the cause of the mutations of all the other inhabitants of the region (she claims too that the Protagonist's muteness is caused by such a miasma). She also claims that the 'book,' quite possibly a reference to the bible, will save them. She exhibits aggressive behaviors too (such as hitting her kids) which suggests her time spent inside the house has driven her mad. The Cripple will first point the Protagonist towards the Elephants in the Swamp Cottage, by suggesting that they have Oxygen Tanks. Before the player will be able to meet the Elephants face to face, however, they will need to repair the generator outside their house, requiring 10 scrap metal. This, however, is made trivial, due to the large number of bear traps set up all around their home. Once fixed, the Elephants will thank you and open the door. Upon speaking to them, the mother Elephant will give the player a quest. One of her sons ran away in pursuit of his hobby of 'collecting mushrooms,' and you are required to bring him back alive and well. The Child can be found in the Mushroom Glade behind a locked door in Mushroom Granny's house. Upon retrieving him, the mother Elephant will take him into another room and he will disappear from the game. The player is rewarded with an Oxygen Tank for their efforts. It is revealed that the mother of the Elephants is the paranoid daughter of Mushroom Granny, and the wife of the Thief. This also means that she is the mother of The Three. They are three of her seven children. One of her children is dead and his decomposing corpse is sitting in the Old Shed. The Musician is a major character in Darkwood. He is a resident of the forest who is changing due to the Plague. In the past, the Musician was living with his two parents in the Old Woods. His exact age is unknown, but he was likely born around the same time the Being first arrived in 1975, which means he has spent the majority of his life, if not all of it, in the woods while the Plague was active. His mother worked in the fields and was talented violinist, less is known about his father. It appears that the Musician was closer to his mother, who he speaks about more frequently than his father, and who would have been the one to teach him to play the violin. Some time before the start of the game, his parents both began to become overwhelmed by the Plague, and became immobilized as a result of it, losing much of their ability to talk. The Musician did not understand what was happening to his parents and why they were no longer interacting with him, he thought they were angry with him so he eventually ran away from home, making the abandoned Silo his new hideout. While he was gone, his parents mutated into chompers. Around three months before the start of the game, the Musician attended a Kupala night held in the village, and witnessed the Chicken Lady accompanying her deformed sister, the Pretty Lady When it came time for the Pretty Lady to throw her wreathe (most likely it was thrown for her, due to the need to keep her restrained) it landed in the river. Perhaps seeing his own mutations reflected in those of the Pretty Lady, the Musician fished her wreathe out of the water, and declared himself to be her future husband. The Chicken Lady was quick to drive him away, and with good reason as the Plague had left her sister with an insatiable appetite for human flesh. The Musician has been attempting to court the Pretty Lady ever since, by playing music outside her window. He is implied to otherwise be very much alone, the other villagers fearing him because of his mutated appearance and not allowing him near them. Despite this, it seems he was friends with both the Chicken Lady's brother Janek before his disappearance and is on good terms with the Doctor who he is very grateful to for providing him with a wooden mask. The Musician is a shy and nervous boy, but is eager to make friends. The Pretty Lady is a relative of the Chicken Lady (her sister). She can be found in the Chicken Lady's House, a location in The Village. The Pretty Lady is a mutated, gigantic woman hidden under a blanket in the locked room of the Chicken Lady's House. Her ghastly wheezing can be heard from even outside her room, and her figure can be seen twisting and turning under the blanket if one carefully looks into her room through the barricaded window. In the Train Cart Dream sequence, it is shown that when she first became infected with the plague her brother Janek and sister the Chicken Lady took her to the Doctor to be treated. The Doctor was unable to do anything except bind the Pretty Lady's arms, as by this point she had developed cannibalistic tendencies. These cannibalistic tendencies is why the Chicken Lady ultimately had to lock her away. What happens to the Pretty Lady depends on which character the player gives the Key Covered in Chicken Feces; If given to Wolfman, the player will find her half-eaten body in Barn Ruins in the Old Woods. If the key is given to the Musician, nothing happens to her. The player has the choice to enter once acquiring the key to the room she is in. The player can then steal the Fabric covering her body, revealing her grotesque form, and she begs them to return the blanket. It can be returned but stealing it has no known consequences. Alternatively, the player can kill her. Killing her will result in the Chicken lady, Wolfman and the Musician expressing their disdain to the player. If she was killed by the player, the player must then kill the Chicken lady in order to proceed with the story and find the Doctor's House. Alternatively, if the player wishes to save the Musician and the Chicken Lady, the player would have to unlock the Pretty Lady's door before giving the Musician the key, but not kill her. Progress through the Musician's quest, kill his parents to save him and get the appointment with the doctor. After obtaining the doctors location, the player can then kill the Pretty Lady, saving the Musician and obtaining a unique ending where the Chicken Lady will adopt the Musician if you follow the Bliss ending. The Chicken Lady is a strange, old woman living with her chickens in the Chicken Lady House, found within the Village. She lives with many pet chickens which she keeps for eggs and company, and her sister the Pretty Lady who she cares for, and her brother Janek also lived close by prior to the start of the game. She expresses frustration at the Musician who has been attempting to court her sister by playing the violin outside of their house, the boy not understanding the true nature of the Pretty Lady's condition or the danger it would put him in if she was freed. Inside the house where she lives, behind a locked metal door which can only be accessed with the Key, can be found the Pretty Lady, as well as a dresser containing several loot items. The Doctor is a desperate inhabitant of the Darkwood who is not originally an inhabitant of the area, being a community doctor who moved to the area with his daughter and his wife some time prior to 1975. When the plague began to get out of control and road blocks were put in place, his wife and daughter were evacuated, but he chose to remain behind to continue tend to the two villages. Eventually he was left without a choice to leave as the woods consumed all the roads leading out of the forest sometime around late 1977 (as this is the date on the newspaper in his now useless car). He was still able to get between villages as late as 1982, as he mentions having still been visiting the Swamp Village five years prior to the current time. The Doctor has been trying for many years to cure victims of the plague but without any success. His medications becoming increasingly outlandish as seen in the numerous doctor notes which can be found throughout the game. At one point he attempted to isolate villagers below the Church, this was either to protect the healthy or cure the sick, it is unclear, but either way this attempt was a failure and all those who remained succumbed to the plague and the Doctor abandoned the project. With his failures mounting, the villagers began to turn on him in their frustration. This ultimately culminated with them attempting to lynch him in the Prologue while he is holding the Protagonist captive. The villagers appear as Black Chompers to the Protagonist who is still under the influence of essence, but the destroyed ransacked house can be re-encountered later in the game (and the Doctor's medical bag can be now be found in a fire in the Village), and the Doctor has fled to take refuge in the Train Wreck. Having been desperate to leave now for some time, the Doctor has grown to truly despise the Outsiders, he knows they can come to and leave the woods as they like thanks to their network of tunnels, yet leave him and the villagers all to their fate for fear of spreading contagion.
