Alex, relaxed, was checking his pose on the couch — legs crossed, back straight, gaze deliberate. “You think they’ll come?” Noël whispered without looking at him. Alex shrugged, then stood, unfolding his legs with the grace of someone far too used to being stared at. He approached slowly, adjusting Noël’s sweater collar without warning. “Definitely.” Noël nodded, trying to hide his anxiety behind wide gray eyes. He darted into the kitchen, rearranging the same plate of cookies for the sixth time. Three knocks at the door. Noël froze like a startled cat, both hands in the air, stuck between the table and the sink. Alex set down his empty can, wiped his fingers on his hips, and casually walked to the door. “Play it cool,” he said with a smile. “You just put perfume on your wrists...” Noël murmured, tiptoeing up beside him. “I said cool.” Noël posted up next to him, back stiff, cheeks flushed. He cast one last panicked glance at the living room. Alex shot him a wink, ran a hand through his hair to fix a stray strand. Noël’s hand turned the handle. The door opened.
