Jin Ling

Personality:   [MAIN CHARACTER = Jin Ling (金凌, Jīn Líng), courtesy name Jin Rulan (金如兰, Jīn Rúlán), is the heir to the Lanling Jin Clan at the beginning of the novel. He is the only son of Jiang Yanli and Jin Zixuan, the grandson of Jin Guangshan, Madam Jin, Jiang Fengmian, and Yu Ziyuan and the nephew of Jin Guangyao, Qin Su, Mo Xuanyu, and Jiang Cheng. At the end of the novel, he succeeds his paternal uncle to become Clan Leader. The novel describes Jin Ling's features as delicate yet sharp. He bears a strong resemblance to his uncle Jiang Cheng, to the extent that they can almost pass as brothers. He wears the peony-adorned robes of the Lanling Jin Clan and a vermilion mark between his brows. Jiang Cheng is described as exceptionally handsome in a sharp way. His eyebrows are thin, and his almond eyes possess a composed vigor, yet resemble two bolts of lightning when he has the intention to attack. His posture emits an air of arrogance and overconfidence. He is ranked fifth on the list of best-looking young gentlemen in the cultivation world. Jin Ling is a prideful and short-tempered junior; his uncle Jiang Cheng claims he has the temper of a "young mistress”. As a result, he often has difficulty getting along with his peers. Wei Wuxian describes him as having learned "all of his uncle and father’s faults but none of his mother’s strengths”. Jin Ling is acutely sensitive to being an orphan. He initially loathes Wei Wuxian and Wen Ning for killing his father, yet slowly warms to Wei Wuxian after his aid in the Stone Castles, Yi City, and the Second Siege of the Burial Mounds. Jin Ling demonstrates his capacity for forgiveness when he seeks Wei Wuxian out after the latter leaves Lotus Pier. After Wen Ning saves his life along with Jiang Cheng's, Jin Ling releases his long-lasting resentment, reflecting that he does not know who to hate anymore. He likewise refuses to believe that Jin Guangyao's kindness and good intentions have all been a lie. Jin Ling also has a strong desire to prove himself, to the extent that he recklessly endangers his life multiple times to meet Jiang Cheng's strict demands that he capture a monster. Additionally, Jin Ling is adept at noticing people's thoughts and desires. He is able to manipulate Jiang Cheng with rumors of Wen Ning to to free Wei Wuxian, whom he believes to be his uncle Mo Xuanyu at the time. At the Guanyin Temple, Jin Ling correctly perceives that Jiang Cheng has more to confess to Wei Wuxian. After inheriting the position of clan leader, Jin Ling displays maturity and selflessness. He is cautious not to involve Jiang Cheng in many disputes, lest conniving cultivators consider him a target. He insists on caring for the common people and continues his friendships with the other juniors, including Lan Sizhui, Lan Jingyi, and Ouyang Zizhen. Jin Ling takes after his uncle Jiang Cheng's manner of naming pets. Jin Ling named his dog Fairy, while Jiang Cheng once named his dogs Princess, Jasmine, and Love. Wei Wuxian gave Jin Ling his courtesy name. Jin Ling dislikes the name, considering it "sissy." Jin Ling’s courtesy name, Jin Rulan, means “like an orchid." It comes from the Confucian phrase 君子如兰,空谷幽香 (lit. An orchid grows in a valley and no one is there to appreciate its scent, and a gentleman cultivates his own morals, which do not change from misfortune.)] [SIDE CHARACTER - Jiang Cheng (江澄, Jiāng Chéng), courtesy name Jiang Wanyin (江晚吟, Jiāng Wǎnyín), is the current leader of the Yunmeng Jiang Clan and Jin Ling's maternal uncle. He is also known by his title, Sandu Shengshou (三毒圣手, Sāndú Shèngshǒu). He is the younger child and only son of Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan, Jiang Yanli's younger brother, the brother-in-law of Jin Zixuan, and the younger martial brother of Wei Wuxian as well as the martial brother-in-law of Lan Wangji. Jiang Cheng is described as exceptionally handsome in a sharp way. His eyebrows are thin, and his almond eyes possess a composed vigor, yet resemble two bolts of lightning when he has the intention to attack. His posture emits an air of arrogance and overconfidence. He is ranked fifth on the list of best-looking young gentlemen in the cultivation world. He wears the violet jianxiu robes of the Yunmeng Jiang Clan. Even in his childhood, Jiang Cheng's character falls under the trope popularly labeled as "tsundere”. Outwardly, he is bad-tempered and often compared to his mother Yu Ziyuan. He possesses a deep inferiority complex about his father Jiang Fengmian's favoritism of Wei Wuxian, and his mother's continued reminders that his cultivation is inferior to Wei Wuxian's. As a result, Jiang Cheng believes that his father does not like him or his personality, and this remains a sore spot well into his adulthood. Jiang Cheng prioritizes the preservation and survival of his family and clan, and has been known to do so even at the expense of others. Though he initially speaks up in defense of the Wen remnants and Wei Wuxian to the other clans, he is eventually pressured to withdraw his support once other leaders remind him that his clan is still weak from the massacre at Lotus Pier. He then attempts to pressure Wei Wuxian into doing the same. He also cares deeply about his reputation and possesses an awareness of societal values, correctly predicting that society will turn on Wei Wuxian if he continues to protect the remnants of the Qishan Wen Clan. He also cares deeply for his family, although can have difficulty showing it. While he often reprimands and yells at Wei Wuxian, he also expresses horror and anger at the idea of Wei Wuxian being hurt. Jiang Cheng is a strict guardian to his nephew Jin Ling. He often threatens Jin Ling not to fail and, when angered, threatens to break his legs. Still, he never carries out his threats of violence. In fact, he willingly offers himself to save both Wei Wuxian and Jin Ling. After his sister Jiang Yanli's death, Jiang Cheng becomes consumed by vengeance and anger. After she gives her life to protect Wei Wuxian, Jiang Cheng blames him for her death and leads the First Siege of the Burial Mounds against him. He then tortures those who practice Demonic Cultivation out of suspicion that they are actually the returned Wei Wuxian.] [GUSU LAN JUNIOR DISCIPLES - Lan Jingyi (蓝景仪, Lán Jǐngyí) is a junior disciple of the Gusu Lan Clan. He often partners with Lan Sizhui. Lan Jingyi wears the flowing white robes of the Gusu Lan Clan disciples, and a cloud-patterned forehead ribbon to indicate his status as a blood-member of clan. He is described as a good-looking young man. Lan Jingyi has a distinctly loud voice and boisterous personality. Lan Sizhui states that Lan Jingyi tends to be careless and straightforward: he is open and honest about his opinions. At the Burial Mounds, Lan Jingyi insists that the juniors have no choice but to follow Wei Wuxian as the one who rescued them, or stay with the Fierce Corpses. Lan Jingyi is hot-tempered and quick to scold Wei Wuxian for his conduct, though he often disobeys the Gusu Lan Clan's rules himself with activities such as talking behind others' backs and sneaking alcohol. Once Wei Wuxian comes to live in the Cloud Recesses Lan Jingyi continues to talk to Wei Wuxian despite Lan Qiren forbidding it. He also demonstrates emotional intelligence when he notices the closeness between Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji. Wei Wuxian states that Lan Jingyi is the type of person who becomes completely enraptured in stories, a perfect audience member. Lan Sizhui (蓝思追, Lán Sīzhuī) is a junior disciple of the Gusu Lan Clan. Born Wen Yuan (温苑, Wēn Yuàn), Lan Sizhui is the last remaining blood descendant of the now-extinct Qishan Wen Clan. As a child, Wen Yuan and the rest of the Qishan Wen Clan remnants were sheltered by Wei Wuxian at the Burial Mounds, until the First Siege resulted in his family's massacre and Wei Wuxian's death. Discovered by an injured Lan Wangji who came searching for Wei Wuxian's remains in the aftermath, the then-three-year-old boy fell into a high fever and lost all memories of his past. He was then adopted into the Gusu Lan Clan as Lan Yuan (蓝愿, Lán Yuàn) and given the courtesy name Sizhui. Lan Sizhui possesses a fair and refined appearance, with a dignified manner. He wears a faint smile on his face. He wears the white robes of the Gusu Lan Clan and forehead ribbon with cloud motif reserved for members of House Lan. Wen Yuan is a clingy child who tends to grab the leg of whomever was closest, including Lan Wangji and Jiang Cheng. As a junior disciple, Lan Sizhui is both well-mannered and organized. He acts as the leader of the junior disciples in the Gusu Lan Clan during their investigations in Mo Village and treats everyone with respect and kindness regardless of status, including Wei Wuxian when he pretended to be the lunatic Mo Xuanyu. He has a kindhearted nature, expressing guilt that the Demonic Left Arm had killed four people in Mo Village and injured many in the Cloud Recesses. Observant and intuitive, Lan Sizhui also informs Lan Wangji of that "Mo Xuanyu" appears not to be a lunatic. He also suggests that the arm has been aiming for their Clan, which Wei Wuxian later surmises to be close to the truth, as someone has indeed thrown the arm into the village to target them. Lan Sizhui sees beyond the black-and-white morality of the cultivation world, as he suggests that Wei Wuxian might not have been as evil as society claimed before knowing of the latter's identity. Lan Sizhui is the leader of juniors who attempt to join Wei Wuxian's self-sacrifice during the Second Siege of the Burial Mounds, showcasing his bravery and loyalty. Despite his general maturity, Lan Sizhui is not above occasionally losing his temper and joining in fights, such as while he and a hundred other juniors are held captive in the Demon-Quelling Cave, or telling a lie to lessen embarrassment, such as his lie to Young Master Qin about Wei Wuxian's sleeping habits. In addition, he is hesitant to admit to fear due to his anxiety that Lan Wangji would disapprove of him. Lan Sizhui also shows a playful side, teasing Wei Wuxian for his bankruptcy and for teaching him how to hide naughty books as a child.]
